King of the Dead
They quest for immortality only to find death in the process
Chapter One
The Beginning
I met Rodger in grade school, he was a normal kid so to say except for his strong interest in myths and legends, especially those that were considered by most to be fairy tales with some truth to them, you know the ones that have been told for centuries. He always said that one day when he was older he would be a great explorer and seek for the truth behind the legends. I for one always regarded his plans as a childhood fantasy, just a phase we all go through when we are younger, I always thought I would be a famous rock star when I was younger but that never happen. I lost contact with Rodger when I went off to college to be a lawyer. He had gone off after high school and joined up with the Peace Corps so he could travel and see the world. I dont think he had much of a choice in the matter, if he had stayed home he would have ended up being a bag boy at the local grocery store. His parents had died in a plane crash when he was ten and his grandparents had raised him the best they could. Rodgers family didnt have the money to send him to college and he wasnt the type of person that could stay still for too long much less be in college for four years while he could have been out seeing the world for free. After graduating I landed a job with a small law firm in New York, I had passed the bar exam with flying colors and excelled in my new job. Only a year had passed and I had become a partner in the law firm, I would often think to myself that it couldnt get much better than this. I had everything I could possibly want in life, a nice place to live, a fancy new car and a very large bank account that was getting bigger every day. Things were going great, so great in fact that I was given an all expenses paid vacation to Paris by one our clients who owned numerous hotels around the world. Two weeks in a foreign land to relax and unwind, just to get away from it all. I arrived in Paris around ten in the morning, needless to say I was rather tired from the time change and all I wanted to do was to get to the hotel and go to bed. Eventually I found a cab that no one was fighting over and went straight to the hotel. I checked in around twelve, two hours from the time that I had landed. My room was very nice and the bed looked even nicer. So without delay I jumped into the shower then got ready for bed. As I laid in bed sleeping I had a dream about my old friend Rodger, in the dream I had saw him leading a group of people into a cave. I was just standing there watching them walking into the cave when Rodger looked at me and said, Hey Steven wake up its time to go. I woke up from the dream to see this guy tapping me on the shoulder telling me to get up. I immediately puncher the man in the face knocking him to the ground, then I got out of bed and put the man in a choke hold and asked him who he was and what was he doing in my hotel room. Gasping for air he said its me Rodger, dont you remember me? I let him go so I could see his face, could this really be Rodger my best friend who I had known since grade school. It was Rodger! Although it was hard to tell at first, he had grown a beard so long he looked like one of the members of ZZ Top. The thing that gave him away was those coke bottle classes he had always worn. My first reaction was one of shock then that of joy as I hadnt seen my old friend in five years. I was glad to see Rodger and wanted to know how things had turned out for him in the Peace Corps. I started to ask Rodger how he was and what was he up to when he ran over my sentence with the words, do you want to live forever Steven? What do you mean Rodger? I asked, wondering what the hell he was talking about. Rodger spoke up and told me about the legend of the King Of The Dead. It seems that while he was in Africa with the Peace Corps he had heard about a man who could bring back the dead and make the living immortal. The man had lived more than ten thousand years ago as a great healer. It is rumored that he was cut up and placed in seven separate boxes by his tribe, for they had feared he was in league with something evil. The people say that he who brings the seven boxes together shall he himself become immortal and learn all the knowledge of the so-called King of the Dead. Rodger said that many people thought the secrete location of the seven boxes was written on a scroll and given to the Egyptians for safekeeping. He went on to say that he knew where the scroll was and he was going to get it, but he wanted me to come with him. Rodger just stood there waiting for my answer. Well to say the least I was shocked, why did Rodger want me to go with him and more importantly how did he find out where I was. There was also the question of how he got into my room. I asked Rodger these questions and he told me that his expedition was being financed by Raymond Parker, the same man who had arranged this vacation for me, the same man whom had hired me three months ago to represent him in court. Mr Parker mentioned my name while talking to Rodger about a month ago. Rodger told Mr. Parker that I was a very dear friend of his and he would like it very much if he would consider letting me tag along with them on their quest. Mr. Parker agreed with Rodger and set up this trip for me so that I could meet up with Rodger. This was a little much for me to take in all at once, Rodger said that when he heard my name the first thing he could think of was how great it would be for the two of us to go in search of the legend and see what truths we could uncover. I really wasnt into this sort of thing but hey what the hell I had two weeks off and nothing that important to do. What better way to spend my vacation than with an old friend. I told Rodger I would go with him if he would just let me get a few hours of sleep. Rodger agreed and said he would return in the morning and for me to have my bags packed and ready to go by eight the next morning. The next day Rodger met me in the lobby and we caught a cab to the airport, I was a little curious about where we were going. Rodger said that we were on our way to Egypt, Cairo to be exact. That was where the scroll was, he also told me that Mr. Parker was waiting on us. It seems that Mr. Parker has strong political ties with members of the Egyptian government. I figured we would have plenty of time to talk on the flight to Cairo, but as soon as we got on board Rodger went straight to sleep. Well so much for conversation, I sat back and enjoyed the flight.
