What happens when you don't understand a foreigner's accent? Click here! ...Cool Blizzard

Well, I'm a student aide in the library at school, and I have to deal with all kinds of students every day. Some just come up to me and say, "Uh, I need a book." ...but that's a different story.

There is this little foreign girl whom I have had trouble with before this even. My best friend used to be a library aide too, and SHE has had trouble with her. This little girl's accent is sooooo hard to understand, plus she has trouble with English. She asked me about a book or something, and I probably looked stupid... Every time I even SEE her in the library I'm scared she's going to ask me something.

Well, here is what happened a couple days ago, and I must say that this is one of my MOST embarrassing moments ever! I saw her coming towards me, and I immediately got nervous. She came up to me, and this is what it sounded like to me when she talked to me.... "Can you tell me where the kleenc is?" I stared at her, probably bright red at this point and said, "What's it called?" "KLEENC" She said. I was HOPING she meant a book, so I got on the computer to search for that book. "How do you spell it?" I asked. Then she said, "No, no, I'm looking for the KLEENC, in the school." Then I took another wild guess and thought maybe she wanted the KLEENEX, LOL, so I picked up a box of tissues and held it out to her. "NOOOOO!" She said, "I'm looking for the KLEENC. The nurse's office!" So I said, "Ohhhhhhhhh, the CLINIC!" I told her where to go and added, "I'm an idiot, sorry." I had nooooooooo idea what she was talking about. Why didn't she just say the NURSE'S OFFICE in the first place! LOL.... "the clinic".... it was sooooo embarrassing. I handed her TISSUE for crying out loud!!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my dorkiness.... hehehe, maybe I AM an idiot.... =)

Date: 3/29/2001 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 4605    Don't worry, at the beginning of the year, I met this really CUTE guy that I thought was an exchange student; so I asked him where he was from. I thought he said Kalamazoo (as in Michigan), so I was kind of depressed that he was only a transfer student. Then, he (Daniel is his name) repeated it again. It was Brazil! Maybe I need to learn Portuguese...

Date: 3/29/2001 10:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 28071    if you typed in kleenc (author 27845) and thought it was a book then your an idiot lol, i'm only kidding blizz. One of my roommates, his name is Voltaire, and he is from Hati. He's only been in the country for four or five years maybe but speaks pretty good english. Sometimes though, it's hard to understand him and he pronunciates words a little differntly occasionally. He'll call my friend Wobin instead of Robin lol and I will ask him if "Wobin" stopped by today.

That usually works...But I make sure my husband never leaves my side when they're around :) I've never felt so much fear.
