hmmm....good question. honestly, if i were completely disabled and in an enormous amount of pain, i would hope that someone would "help" me kill myself. great idea for a post. |

Wow, there are soooo many sides to this issue... Stop the pain sure, some dignity in death sure...but what if in the state of great pain, and having to endure such terrible time, what if in that time, the mind finds some great development and enlightenment that changes that pain filled soul, and the soul then is filled with a GREATER message!... lots of good sides here! Great Post!! |

I guess I would be kind of selfish in this.I have had to watch a love one suffer and waite for death to come, knowing that this was not the way that they wanted it to be.Life to me is the most precious gift in the world.I could never take part in taking that gift away.I believe that if I made a choice like that, then I would always wonder if it was the right choice.I only pray that if I am ever put in this situation that this person can understand and forgive me for putting their life in Gods hands.~ |

hmmm, I am a nurse, and totally support euthanasia. Why should people who are diagnosed with a terminal illness be made to suffer more -and longer, than they would let an animal suffer? I would never assist someone to die, it is illegal, but I know what I would want if it was me -JUST TO DIE!!! :) |

for those who are terminal, you would be doing them a favor helping them to shed that old useless body, and stop the pain. Logan51 |

The problem is not so much in what you are doing but in
the door you are opening if you encourage this and especially
legalize it. You would open up a TERRIBLE can of worms...
I HATE to see someone suffer but I SURE don't want to see suicide
encouraged or give people the power to kill others even for mercy...
History has proven that this is really a bad thing to get involved
with... |

I also would like to add this, in this day and age NO ONE
should have to be in so much pain and suffer so much when
there are medications which can be given to them to even
keep them under if necessary. If a doctor lets a patient suffer
terribly, he's a really BAD doctor... |

I think if the person was consenting....then let them have their way...it's their life..they should be able to choose... |

I think it's okay...if someone is suffering and wants to die...and can find a doctor/person willing..then so be it...if they believe in that particular branch of chrisitianity..then maybe that saves them from going to hell or purgatory from self suicide..anyway...yes, it's okay...but i think if i were in such a way..wanted death..i wouldn't need a doctor to assist..where there is a will there is a way..~heather |

if someone really wants to die, they will find a way to do it, with or without help. If a person really wants to die--I think it would be more humane to help someone go out peacefully with their family around them. |

I'm all for euthanasia. And I mean, sure, there are all kinds of medicines that can help the pain and even put you under as Pam said- but what's the point of life if you're just going to be drugged up all the time? When I grow old, if I become terminally ill, I would want someone to assist me in dying. And it probably wouldn't be because I was in so much pain- it would be because I would know that there would come a day when I wouldn't be *me* anymore because I'd be so sick and drugged. I would want to end it all before I let that happen. -Starfly* |

nope! I want to be able to have it done for me. Life is NOT that precious and it's going to end eventually anyway. |

bad bad idea to think you have your own opinion if it is a good thing to consider |

I think it's a matter of personal choice. My mother suffered a great deal of pain, even with the morphine. There was no muscle tissue to cushion her bones, and no fat left in her body. The skin just hung off of her in flaps. Her skeleton was very apparent. This was during the last months of her disease. She was 6' tall, yet I could pick her up in my arms and carry her like a child. Her end weight was just shy of 65 pounds. Would she have opted for assisted suicide? I believe she would have. |
