She is suffering from a mental disorder. Now I think she is unable to help herself--even though she knows it's wrong to do. She should be punished, yes, for not seeking help, but I doubt she is enjoying it. Just my opinion, okay? I'm not trying to knock anyone else's. Your friend, StormBringer |

Yes, Stormbringer, I understand what you are saying, and that is what the newcasters are saying. But, does that mean that a child molester is suffering from pedophilia? And should not be punished for their crime, just should see help? Light and Love |

I ahve watched plenty of things about this. I think these are some sick individuals!! Grrrr it makes me so angry. I have a 6 month old and I can't even imagine hurting him! If i wanted some attention, i am sure that i can find another way to get it! |

What cause this syndrome. I don't know much about it, but I'll tell you, this is really weird. I can't imagine someone hurting their child on purpose in any manner, much less, in this way. Free Girl |

The cause they say, FreeBorn, is a desire to get attention. Kind of like a hypochondriac. Except people have gotten tired of this person crying wolf all the time for attention, and quit giving her that attention. So then, she makes her child very very ill, I have heard where a child may be in the hospital 20 or so times in a couple of years, so she will again be the center of attention of the doctors, friends, relatives, etc. To me, that is not a syndrome or even an illness, that is just the way that a selfish person can always be in the limelight. I agree with you. This parent may have a disease, but it is the children that are suffering. The children should be removed from the homes of people like this and hope that they can end up living normal lives elsewhere. Trouble :) |

Lightworker, I'm not at all saying that. I think the woman should be punished. Because she did act on her impulses instead of seeking help. She is not insane, by definition, because people with the disorder is not insane....just disturbed. Same with pedophiles. Stormy |

Lightworker. I am a psychology freak from reading all the true crime books, (mostly serial killers), but I ran across a sever Munchausen by Proxy case and wanted to learn more about the disorder, so I found a website where I could learn more. Stormy. http://www.ashermeadow.org/ |

Hi,Stormy. Thank you, that is a good website. I only saw one instance (a Houston one) where they said the parent "suffers" from Munchausen BP. I wish they would put me on a jury. And I am one of the most easy going people there are. I hate to be mean, but these people need to be prosecuted to the full instant of the law, including torture and attempted murder. This ladt here in Houston had been to the hospital THREE HUNDRED times in the last 3 years!! Thats is 100 times a year and all these visits were in regards to her children. Thats is absurd and she should be made to suffer the same TORTURE she put on this child!!! |

Lightworker I don't think that anyone is suggesting that she should not be punished for what she has done. She does have a mental disorder and without that mental disorder the things that she did her to her child would probably not have happened. I don't think that the justice system will forget about the child. Do you remember the MaryBeth Tinning case? She was a woman from upstate Ny. She had the same illness and killed 9 of her children. It took years for them to link everything together and exhume bodies for new autopsys and such before she was convicted. But she was convicted. No one had sympathy for her after they found out that she had been the one to hurt her children. In answer to your pedophile question. I would have to say yes, they have some sort of mental disorder that attracts them to little children. I don't think that I have ever seen a child molester or rapist not get prosecuted and be treated like they weren't a criminal because they have this disorder. The majority that I have seen go to jail and get counciling in jail to channel those thoughts elsewhere, because they are never "cured" from those thoughts.....Azairyia |

Well, Azairyia, I usually agree with you, but this time, I just can't. Anytime we have a desire to do something that is socially unacceptable, it can not be labeled as "illness". Some people are just mean and evil. I don't care WHY they are that way, they should not be treated with pity like someone with cancer or diabetes. They are sensation seekers, and I say, give them a sensation that sends them totally out of this life. Light and Love |

Free Girl - I was watching a report on this the other day. They said that what usually happens is that at first the child really does get sick with something. When the mother sees all the attention that brings the child, and subsequently themselves, they perpetuate the illness to keep the attention coming. Even though the child may have already recovered from whatever was ailing them. . . Lightworker - I agree with you. I don't think this is an illness people "suffer" from. These are insecure or lonely people who need attention. They're too chicken to inflict the pain on themselves, so they turn to their innocent little children who would never believe their parents are doing this to them. It's a terrible thing, and they should be punished for it. This news report I was watching said that they are starting to believe that many deaths contributed to "SIDS" are actually mothers suffocating their babies for the attention because of this so-called "syndrome." It's a travesty that these people are made out to be victims of some terrible "syndrome" when really they are selfish, evil, criminals! ~melodious |

I agree with you, Lightworker. I think that I am a very sympathetic and understanding person...and I am sure that in some of these cases the person is mentally ill but we (society) have somehow gotten to this point, where everything is blamed on some kind of illness or disorder or something. No one wants to take responsibility for their actions anymore. Those poor children. I remember the whole Susan Smith thing (the woman who was gonna commit suicide by driving herself and her two sons into a lake; when at the last minute she chickened out). That whole thing made me so mad. Her lawyer (and I know he was probably just doing his job) tried to make her out to be this poor pitiful woman who just didn't have the heart to end her life and leave her kids behind. Just makes me wanna puke. And the message this sends to all the other sickos out there.."Go ahead and poison your children or whatever and we'll all feel sorry for YOU". Not a good thing at all!!! ~peace~ |

Thanks Peep and Melodious! I appreciate your response and for sharing your knowledge. I think our childrens greatest danger is going to come from these cases being ignored, or left to a psychologist to plea for the parent. And I do believe in mental illness, and have a great deal of compassion for those who do suffer from some kind of mental illness, but when you are speaking of a sadist, child molester, or child abuser, I really don't think that should be considered a mental illness. There is a CHOICE in those things. Light and Love to all |

I think it is a huge cop-out on these adults trying to play the victim. These poor children will probably have health concerns for a long time to come. The adults should have all parental rights terminated and have their butts, locked up for the rest of their lives! |
