Germany and their belief in Vampires by Illana

Just a short comment on my stay in Germany and their beliefs in vampires. I was stationed over in Augsburg at that time there was approx. 100,000 people or more living there. This is a very old town and even though they have the latest fashions and cars etc. there beliefs still go back many years. I lived out with the German people not on base as many did and got to know my neigbors very well. To tell you the truth when I arrived there I did not give Vampires and Werewolves any thought at all. One night my husband and a group of friends went out for dinner. We were having such a good time that time got away from us and it was very late. The local taxi`s had stopped running at this time (about 3 or 4 A.M.) and since we were not that far from home we decided to walk. The resturant people became very upset and did not want us to leave. When we ask why they looked at each other a little sheepishly and shook their heads and did not want to tell us. Finally we convinced them to tell us and they said"The Vampires were out now at this time of night to wait till dawn" It seems they were not going home either till daylight. WE just laugh and left. I never really gave it much thought untill a couple days later. I was airing out our bed clothes a habit I had picked up over there, and looked over at the houses around us. All of them had garlic strung all around there roof tops and around the windows and doors. I just got the hairs standing up on my neck and cold chill ran through me. I never stayed out late again, and I shuttered my windows every night with the wooden shutters like everyone else!!!! Illana

Date: 3/30/2001 11:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 24673    If I was in a strange town and everyone was afraid of something, I would figure they knew something and I'd better pay attention. I personally don't believe in vampires, but maybe there is something in that area that is dangerous, who knows? Thanks for the post, bye. Garbage
Date: 3/30/2001 11:31:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14267    These same people also believe in werewolves. Most of the people I talked to were older and swore that they do walk amoung us. I guess we felt protected by numbers and none of us believed in such things only seeing it in the movies here in the states. I know one thing though by the time I had left I believed too. Most I taked to had the same beliefs as those in Mountians of old countries with a few differences. Illana
Date: 4/13/2001 4:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 30668    Hey Illana,Aquaris here,I thought this was a great post, and quite an experience you had, even in modern times people still adhere to the old beliefs that were passed down.I have always been told that Germany is very rich in myths and folklore,I would love to visit, just to experience what you did,you must have felt like you went back in time.A really great story, thank's for sharing it... >>Aquaris<<
Date: 4/14/2001 9:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14267    Yes, I loved it over there and I did not want to come home. I lived there for over two years. I want to go back after I retire to see if it has changed any. I made a lot of good friends while there. The people were very friendly to me. I found the older generation was the nicest and most informative. The younger ones were not the most welcoming to us. At that time skinheads of the German kind(Did not like Americans) were everwhere. I loved the History, how you could have a church built in the 13th centuary right next door to a shop that sold the most up to date fashisons. It just amazed me how the old and new mingled and I loved the customs and lore. Illana
