i believe God ahs a plan for each of us,if he calls on a woman to preach then that his is will and what she should do.i am a christian,i like a man to be a man and in control to take care of me,my husband is learning this role cause his mom always did all the talking and stuff, and i like a man to be gentle but my protector:) |

IMO...if you read the little title above that it says IN THE CHURCH or something like that...so i think in the church woman shouldn't be preachers or anything like that..it is meant for men to do that{Angel} |

I interpret that as the bible was written by men. It was during a time where there were no forms of birth control and a womans place was in the home cooking, cleaning and taking care of children. They probably felt that women didn't know anything because they didn't get out much. It is said that the bible was written through the Holy Spirit, so some advid and literal bible readers may disagree with me. I really don't think that women were created for only reproduction purposes and to be silent (although men would love that at times! LOL!) |

Phrases taken out of test are hard to theorise. A man is to be the master of his own home, but he is to rule it as God would have him. That doen't mean (to me) that you can kick your dog and beat your wife,so to speak, and expect a woman to wash your feet for you(again, so to speak). Stonedhinge |

during this time period if I recall, the men sit on one side of the temple and the women on another side. They did not sit together. And from what I've been told, they would get talking alot. We are to be submissive to our husbands just as they are to be submissive to the will of God. This by no means should be taken for the man to think he can just order a woman around and she has to take everything he dishes out. If the husband is submissive to God then he will treat the woman the way Jesus said to treat her, with all honor. Now was Jesus or timothy saying this?? |

To look at this verse in and of itself, it certainly looks mysogonistic. But the bible requires that we be in the Word more to gain understanding. The bible balances versus like this with telling husbands not to be overbearing, to respect & honor their wives etc. Also, if you look at the lives of several of the women in the bible, you will see that they certainly weren't meek. Some examples of this would be Abraham's wife Sarah(Gen 16:2), Isaac's wife Rebekah(Gen 27:5),Jacob's wife Rachel(Gen 30:1) and Job's wife(Job 2:9). The proverbs 31: 10-31 wife is an ideal to be emulated, but is about as easy to emulate as Christ's perfect example. My wife tries her best to be the submissive wife that the bible teaches of. Here's what I have learned. I don't take advantage of that (lest it go away). She respects my decisions & I respect her input before I make them. It promotes harmony in the household as we don't argue over things. She is not always happy with my decisions, and I allow her some things, that I am not completely happy with. It's all about give and take from both ways, NOT she gives and I take. --- Ed --- |

Parinoid, you must remember this. Jesus came because man could not fill all the requirements set by law. The bible, the new testament gives us examples that we need to go by, and also you have to remember who was talking at the time, rather it was one of the deciples or a word straight from Jesus. You also have to remember the time periods that these works were spoken about. None of us can keep or maintain all the things required by law of the bible, God knew this, so this is what He tells us to do.
1Jn:2:3: And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn:2:4: He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn:2:5: But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn:2:6: He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
1Jn:2:7: Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
1Jn:2:8: Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.Jn:13:34: A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. |

My Bible (hey, I'm no bible scholar, but I can read) says: 1 Timothy 2:11 "Women should learn in silence and all humility." And this was written in respect to (the heading in my Bible above Chapter 2) "Church Worship." So, like some of those above, I have to put it both in context of the time period it was written in AND the subject context. And in case you were unaware, there is at least one religion still around that does not allow women to "(pr)each or to have authority over men." God Bless. |

Ed hit the nail right on the head, FirstBorn. As to the rest of your reply, I also choose to reply with mostly scripture. Matt 28:20 "teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, ..." Jesus told his Apostles to teach us all that He wanted us to do. Therefore, any "commands" made by the Apostles would be from Jesus Himself. Titus 1:1-3 "Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, but at the proper time manifested, even His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior." Paul was entrusted with God's word as well. Paul wrote those words to Titus. I believe Paul wrote the verse this post is focusing on. He explains why he wrote these things in the following verses. Luke 6:46 "Why do you call Me, "Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" John 3:36 "He who believe in the Son has eternal life, but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me, and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." John 14:24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words, and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me." I Thess 4:1-2 "Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus." Clearly obedience is necessary if one claims to be a Christian. I am not saying "abuse women because they are inferior." I am saying as a Christian, if one is truly following what Christ is teaching, they will follow ALL of what is taught, and not justify what they don't agree with or understand. I will also say this again, Ed stated it rather well. Thank you, Ed! And finally, yes, the bible teaches we could never fulfill the "laws" to perfection. I believe, if you look at the context these statements are found, one would see it is a reference to the old law and the old covenant. ie -the 10 commandments, and levitical system. I have stated this before, and I will state it again. Re-read Hebrews and focus on LAW and COVENANT instead of faith to see what it says about these matters. --Paranoid-- |

Parinoid. We all fall short in some manner or another and thank God we have a living God that accepts and forgives our short comings. I have found however that there are lots of men that go to church and use and horde the word of God against their wives to keep them under their thumb and this is not right. They are not really doing what God has commanded them to do. Espcially when these certain men go about doing what ever it is that they please, with in and with out the guide lines that God has sent forth for them, yet they expect their wives to say nothing and follow like a sheep. Then condemn them when something is not to their liking. And this is too bad that It happens. Anyone that is following what God has to say, and yes ED said it very well as so it should be. Too bad more church going men cant see it the way Ed has said. However I can not abide by men that basically say, " do as I say, dont do as I do. " See what I mean??? |

Great question. But I think it is in the "Old Testament".I think the "New Testament" is what God intended for our generation now.Of course,I am not a preacher,or anything, but God give's us knowledge, the more we read HIS WORD.So,maybe someday we will have an answer for that, probably not until we talk with HIM though.God Bless, Mrs. Lee |

Look at the cultural context of the verse. What is the audience, what were the cultural norms and expectations when the letter was written. One of the biggest mistakes people read is to isolate a verse and then expect it to make sence. It all needs to be read and understood as a whole. Phaedra |

I've read quite a bit of literature on how the bible degrades women and heard many points to that effect. I don't have any explanations that are much different, but I do know that women have had it hard both in a bibleless history as with. The fact is your not going to get a Christian woman to stop believing in god just because of certain instances in the bible, just like your not going to believe in god just because the bible tells you to.Ra. |
