When I was in 7th grade I was in the ALPS program at middle school. ALPS is the Alternative Learning Program for Students. Basically, you could "work at your own pace". There was no "class," but the kids were required to complete "units" of work and interface with a teacher to take a test or to ask questions. The idea was that you worked on a unit until you received an "A", then you work on the next unit. Progress was judged by the number of units completed.
Well, in the ALPS program we could sit around and talk if we felt like it or we could draw pictures....a lot of kids thought it was cool to draw pot leaves but I drew guitars and spaceships from Battlestar Galactica (yes I'm old). The "cool" guitar that I wanted was a Gibson Explorer...popularized at the time by Def Leopard and 38 Special. So, I tried....relentlessly to draw this guitar. I couldn't for the life of me draw this guitar. Instead, the "tail" was always exaggeratedly long....like a foot (proportionally) too long. The "tail" would stick out a foot under your arm. I thought nothing of it.
When I turned 17...and playing in a rock band, I had a Gibson Les Paul Silverburst...a way cool guitar...and now a collectors item(played at the time by Def Leopard). Well, while I was at the music store they had some "new" guitars that were "unclaimed freight" at a train station. The guitars had "list price" of $900 but they were selling for $275.00. I bought one and it became my standard guitar (and favorite) for the next 6 years. This guitar was a "JTG Infinox"...a small Nashville Company that was formed and went bankrupt in about 1 year. This guitar was the one that I drew in 7th grade four years before it was built. Also, the "JTG Infinox" had a "wammy bar"--that's the bar used to bend the strings...which was popular at the time by Van Halen in "eruption". I could not have played the Van Halen music with the Les Paul b/c it did not have a wammy bar. --kidguitar How it changed my life:I still have that guitar
