I attended a small catholic grade school in Central Minnesota. It was part of the school curriculum to attend mass at least once during the week. We would take an hour out of class and walk across the parking lot to the church that shared the same name of the school. The church was very large. The main part of the church was upstairs. It was made almost entirely of granite. There was also a crypt to the church where we would attend our weekly mass. The area was smaller with lower ceilings so we could hear what the priest was saying and so there wasn't so much echo. One night, a fire gutted the entire crypt of the church. I mean everything in the basement of the church was destroyed, except for a large painting of the Virgin Mary. The area around the picture was totally burned or black with soot. There wasn't even a mark on the painting. That is pretty amazing in itself. The name of the church and the school......St. Mary's Cathedral Church and grade school! .. How it changed my life:I was young when it happened, probably first or second grade. It strengthened my faith and has ever since.
