Maybe they could join if they were on parole for less than a year....after that, then no. This is just my opinion though. |

To me, it depends on the offense. I do think that this may be the best thing for people who have been in trouble with the law. In the military they learn discipline and how to work with other people. And with the number of repeat offenders it may be better for our communities. Good question. *hugs* kandbmom |

I always thought it was a bad idea for a judge to give somebody the option of jail or the army for the same reason I do not think a felon should be allowed to join; here is my reason if these people can not be trusted to live in our society without breaking the rules why should we trust them with government information. The way i see things are that most felons commit their crime either out of greed or desperation for money, so if they could commit crimes for those reasons what would make you think they would not give information to officials of other countries for the same reasons; desperation or greed. that is my opinion and I make it having a brother that is a felon. he at one point wanted to join the military and I thank goodness he was not allowed.Even though I love him as my brother I would not want him to be part of the military that is to protect me and other people of this land nor is he somebody I want my child to idolize as most children do with members of the military. ... |

Yes, I believe they should be able io because it just MIGHT help to keep them from going back to the PEN. If the govt. allow it then maybe there would be no need for the draft....Capitol |

Yes i believe they should a turn in the military might keep them on the straight and narrow and the level they go into they will not learn top secret information. They will come up with pride a better understanding of what is right or wrong (hopefully). |

My feeling is finish parole and once that is done go and join up, that is if the Military will let that person. Oh and one other thing to get a secret clearence they check out your background, so this person would not get one, so he/she would not have anything to sell to other countries. And for SQKY im a felon I did my time and the crime I commited (theft) was for neither greed or desperation for money, it's was because I was young and dumb. |

GRRRR.... after reading all the comments this is what i have to say: well once you have known someone or been associated with someone who makes a mistake and goes to prison for it, you'll then have a completely different aspect on this subject. some of these people made mistakes and they have done there time. or they made these mistakes years ago. now, for the person who said a felon should never be able to go.... ok so when someone was 18 or 19 they made a bad choice and now at the age of 25 or 30 they should still not be allowed to serve for our country? i think everyone who says felon's or those on parole can't go, then they should fill in for them. to me these guys are willing to put there lives on the line for our country, their country. but we want to set back and judge them... sorry, this really bothers me... oh and as far as the thing about choosing whether to go to jail or with the armed forces...now that's a pile of crap. i mean it could be some sadistic killer who might even kill or hurt our own men. to me once convicted of a crime...you serve your time, theres no multiple choice...basically all i'm saying is who are we to forbid a man/woman from fighting for HIS country???? |

43250, I did say MOST felons. to my way of thinking that does not meen all. However after reading these comments I do see some narrow minded thinking on my behalf. I guess i think repeat offenders should not be allowed in. to those that keep bringing up security clearance I know that these people would not have top security clearance, but I also know (because my ex-husband is in the military) that all soldiers do know some information that others might want. Something as small as what bases are used for live amunition traning just information on the USA period, I know any tourist could also give some of this information but normaly tourists do not travel to countries in which we are having problems. I also know that any soldier captured in war could give this information in hopes of saving their life, I just think the chances could be higher whith somebody that feels they can disregaurd the rules in everyday life. My brother is a repeat offender and I guess that is where I based my narrow minded opinion durring my first comment. Some of you may think I am still narrow minded but if you think about it felons that commit violent crimes or are repeat offenders loose their rights anyway (I am unsure about first time non violent offenders)I know my brother no longer has the right to bare arms he no longer has the right to vote and I ca not remember the other rights he has lost. My brother is not a violent criminal but a criminal non the less. ... |

depends on the crime but for the most part I think it is better than them being on the streets getting into more trouble. It gives them an opportunity to do something productive. |
