I wouldn't do it unless I felt threatened. I have had pets shot and I also had one that was poisoned in my own back yard. It's inhumane, yet people get away with it! :) |

I agree with you, I think it's totally NOT ok, unless it's in self defence, or in defecne of another person. If the dog is obviously vicious, and is or had seriously injured a person, I think that's the only time it's even remotley close to OK. Erin- |

no... the only way I would think shooting a pet or animal would be okay is if you were in a situation where the animal was in terrible termedous suffering and you couldn't get it to a vet or get medical attention... but I dont see those circumstances happening nowadays :) |

I don't think that you should ever shoot at an animal. Self defense is an exception but other that that, it is totally unexceptable. There are other ways of getting a dog to leave you alone! I'm glad buck is ok :) |

Thanks for replying Becky, Introubleintex, and Rika. I am so mad about how someone could be so inhumane. Buck is a great dog. Part lab part shepard. He wouldn't hurt a fly. People can be so cruel. I just don't understand the mentality of such a person.......... |

MoonAngel, I agree with hunting only because of overpopulation, starvation and disease in animal herds. But only if the meat is utilized, I hate trophy hunters. I do not agree to shooting at any domestic animal because it is in my trash. It is so wonderful that all of you have such loving hearts......... |

I would not shoot at an animal that was on my property, or in my trash... NOPE!!! If they wre after me or a member of my family... or even any other human being, then I would see NO other way aroung it but to shoot... BUTTTTT, to help your hubby a little bit here, there are livestock farmers out there, or cattle ranchers that it is their JOB to maintain their animals... it is their livlihood... I have heard this talked about before at work and the general consensus is that if there was an animal, (dog, wild cat, coyote) that was after their livlihood, then they would have NO choice in the matter... they would HAVE to do it... So I guess there is reasons where a dog could be shot, as bad as I hate it and you hate it... |

Definately no, and trust me I know about it, I was shot with a salt cartridge from a shotgun as a child, because the farmer (who's land I was crossing) thought I was someone else who had been annoying his livestock. So mistakes do happen. All the best MadProf. |

The problem is that with the population of strays being as large as it is, it's sometimes hard to tell which are strays and which aren't. If poor Buck was too far away from the person who shot him to see his tags, then they probably assumed that he was a stray and weren't concerned. I agree with you that you should never shoot a domesticated animal unless it's in defence for your life, but unfortunately there are people out there that don't feel the same way. It's better that Buck is a house dog, especially if you live in a rural area with lots of farms. Farmers are usually alot more worried about their herds than they ever are about the local pet population. |

Only in self defence ... or unless the animal is suffering. I cannot stand to see an animal suffer so I'd rather someone shot it :( But otehr than those two instances no. I mean, we have all the neighbors cats coming in our yard all the time and they kill our birds and stuff so I run after them and meow... but I enver shoot them. They still come back the next day though... |

I have to agree with Gail. If I had livestock and a dog was threatning my animals I would definitley shoot in its direction to scare it off. If it attacked my animals I would shoot it. I would be in the position to woner why should your dog be allowed to kill my animals and threaten my livelihood. Livestock is exspensive. |

The only reasons would be self defense. But no, people shouldn't shoot at domesticated animals. The only reason I could think of is like if you had a pet horse and it injured itself so bad it was going to suffer a terrible death so you made it's death short and quick. We shoot at wild animals like rattlesnakes, skunks, foxes, rats, mice, and coyotes. But never any ones pet. One time I think my grandpa shot a bull dog, because it tried to attack his other dog. But most of our animals are stray animals, and they have all made very good pets. With the exception of a stray dog named "Mean dog" who later attacked my brother, but we still didn't shoot him. Animal control had to catch him and kill him to see if he had rabies. |

Those who say you should only shoot in self defense are giving animals more rights than humans. It is OK to shoot an animal or a human to protect your property. Hugo |

Hugo..Animals don't know right from wrong..A human knows it is wrong and knows the danger of getting shot..A dog isn't aware that it would be a very unwise thing to be caught stealing a man's chickens, but a man can reason and know the consequences..So it isn't that animals are given more rights than humans..It is a matter of having more compassion on the ignorant.. |

How sad. When I was a lil girl my parents friend had 2 of the coolest dog and some farmer shot them :( I was so terrible. I had someone beat my cat to where she had to be put down. People like that needs shot. In self defense yes to just be a mean person no. Yelling usually would scare a dog chasing live stock anyways. I get animals on my land all the time. I give them water. They go home. they just come visit now and don't harm a thing! |

So it is OK to shoot the 14 year old neighbor boy who is stealing a chicken but not a dog that is doing the same thing? The dogs owner should take responsibility for his dog if he does not the dog may well suffer. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.Hugo |

We are in a situation today where most people are not going to be terribly impacted by the loss of a couple chickens. This has not always been the case. A load of birdshot might teach both a dog and a 14 year old a lesson. Hugo |

Yes, it is. I don't want to sound mean but it's true. We used to raise livestock and dogs would chase them until they were so tired and scared they'd do desperate things to try and get away, like running into barbed-wire fences or busting through wooden gates, maiming themselves sometimes to the point where they would have to be put down. I never liked having to shoot any domesticated animals, especially dogs, but when it came to choosing between dogs or our livestock, guess which won. With those, we shot to kill and usually did. With others we merely shoot to warn. Countless dogs have sped away with a tail full of birdshot, not seriously hurt but definitely warned. And if another dog comes on our land to fight with our dog, it might as well sign it's own death warrant because I consider that sufficient reason to resort to whatever I deem necessary to remove it, including lethal force. I won't stand for someone else's dog to come and hurt mine on *my* property. Nope. I in no way support torturing animals (the rubber band thing is awful) but there is a difference between protecting what's yours and just plain cruelty. Morrigan |
