Scam ... Fraud Poetry Contests.....

  Author:  101  Category:(Interesting) Created:(7/30/2002 10:09:00 AM)

Did you win, or are you in a poetry contest. I know you don't want to know this but you might be (or most probably) involved in a scam.. Check out the latest poetry scam information at:

http://wind.wind.org/literary.scams.htm

Please don't fall for this scam, Radman's sister did not listen to our advice and she did submit her poem. She was also told that she needed to pay her own airfair from Phoenix to Washington D.C to see if she won money for her poem. Only when she got there did she see that it was a ploy to get more money from her. There were no prizes to win. These scams have been uncovered on 60 Minutes and 20/20. These so called contests have no other plans other than to take your money and run. The books that are promised to be published are only sold to the contributers of the poetry. These poor individuals also have to pay to have there works (so called) published. These rip off artists know that once a poet has their poetry in a book, the person will buy many copies for their friends and family. There are no published copies of this poetry on any bookstore shelves anywhere. Sorry for the disapointment to anyone that may have joined this organization. We would like to keep other people from commiting the same mistake.

As long as USM is on the internet, this will be a place to display anyones poetry. We will never scam to allow anyone to enjoy this service.

This is an excerpt from one of the pages at the link above:

This scam is perfectly legal, but it leads to heartbreak all the same. You see an ad for a poetry contest offering big prizes, and you send in your stuff. Back in the mail comes a letter praising your lovely poem, which although it did not win a prize, was still deemed worthy of publication. To guarantee inclusion in the anthology, and to receive a copy of the book, you just need to write a check for $49.95. What's wrong here? It's a vanity operation, with no quality control. You pay the fee, you get into the anthology. Meanwhile, libraries and bookstores will not carry the book.

Date: 5/28/2000 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 8333    I absolutely hate greedy scammers. I've seen letters in the mail, that say for a mere $25 you'll be entered into a contest in which the end is supposed to be a prize of $10,000, oh and you'll get a little book that's a free gift. I wish the government could do more to stop people like that but I know it's almost impossible to do anything about it. Demon-devastator
Date: 5/28/2000 7:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 9319    thanks for the info. I love the way everyone here tries to take care of each other....crickett
Date: 5/28/2000 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 5940    While I am not a poet, I can appreciate the way you presented this information. It's another reason why we enjoy our visit's here at USM, to have fun, not to be taken advantage of. Thanks!
Date: 5/28/2000 8:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    Wow! Thanks for the info, I just don't see how people can do that to others....Man this world is full of all kinds....Shame on them!!!
Date: 5/28/2000 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 5504    This is interesting. My brother recently entered a photography contest and was told that he won a spot in this photography book. The books cost 65$. I told him it sounded kinded fishy, but he only got mad at me thinking I didn't believe in his talent. I wonder if this was really a scam too. It sounds like the same type of thing. Thanks for the info.
Date: 5/28/2000 10:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 4739    Heard this before. Thanks for the info!
Date: 5/28/2000 10:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 5484    been there done that,i submit poems, but from now on when they sned me somrthing to publish my poem and pay for it,i throw it away,it is fraudulant,it sucks big time!
Date: 5/28/2000 12:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 6904    Its good to know these things, i would never give any money on the internet but lots of people would- this needs to be stopped, its an awful way to take your money. Although I do think that if they published these books and told people they would never be sold on the bookshelf i think people would do it, its nice to anything of yours in published form- even if only a few people see it.
Date: 5/28/2000 1:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 4545    Admin.. I don't know if you got my other message.. but Since this whole thing just happened to me.. I am trying to do something about it. Anything I can. Somebody has to right? Thank you again.

Date: 5/28/2000 1:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 1444    GASP!!!! Well that's all I got right now... Hee Hee Hee That's cheap, stealing folks poetry like that. The GREAT America where you can steal anyone hard work and sell it as your own. Ahhhh I LOVE this Country!---
Date: 5/28/2000 3:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 6732    that is what makes people so uncomfertable with showing any of there poetry or anything they have you never know what you are getting into......
Date: 5/28/2000 3:57:00 PM  ( Admin-2 )   Claire, your correct, if they were doing this in a honest form then that would be fine. However they promise to mass market these books and that doesn't happen. They also offer to have credited poetry judges and scouts at the readings for the poetry, none are credited with anyone except thier own firm. Very unfortunate indeed.
Date: 5/28/2000 4:02:00 PM  ( Admin-2 )   Sunflour Mom, my guess would be that the photo contest would be the same game. Advise him to get out while he can.
Date: 5/28/2000 4:10:00 PM    WOW THANKS FOR TELLING US ABOUT THIS.

Date: 5/28/2000 7:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 2183    I entered a poem in a contest i saw in a magazine. They wrote me back saying that mine was spicked to be a finalist. Only I had to send twenty five dollars to buy the certificate if I win. Seemed a little strange so I never sent anythng back.

Date: 5/28/2000 11:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 4995    Okay..okay..*sigh*..I'll admit it..I was in high school when it happened and I suckered out and bought the book my poem was published in..to this day I laugh because the worst part wasn't losing the money..it was that if anyone asked if I was published...I had to think back that was the WORST poem I ever wrote..haha..Celtic Princess
Date: 5/29/2000 9:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 4231    Admin..thanks for the info although I don't have much talent for writing poetry..I know people who do, and I would'nt want them to be involved in a scam...Thanks your the best.....I don't know why they don't really break-down on these people..! they are SCUM!

Date: 11/28/2000 3:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 6867    Oh yeeeees...I've gotten these in the mail from a certain website where tons of ppl submit their poetry. I felt so good to get one of these...I was told that my poem was going to be published because of its artistic vision or some garbage like that. Yep just hand over the 49.95 and you'll be able to get one of the first copies...I soon found out that it was a big joke. Instead of paying YOU for the rights to publish your poetry, you have to pay them! It's ridiculous!
Date: 11/28/2000 3:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 17014    Thank you for the information, as I love to write poetry and often thought of having it published, I now know what to watch out for. TY again!! Kelsey77

Date: 11/28/2000 4:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 17487    This is very helpful info. I always say, "If it costs you the author to be published, then it ain't real." It's worked for me. StormTrackre5

Date: 11/28/2000 8:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 15232    I entered one and they said that I didn't have to pay anything, I don't have to buy the book to be entered in the contest. So, I have nothing to lose. They were called Iliad Press or something and no $ is required. But I know a bunch of other ones do require $$. Karen a/k/a Wumpy

Date: 11/28/2000 8:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 17561    Well I've been scamed and had...It just happened to me last week...do you all remember me saying that I recieved a form back in the mail about my very first poem I have written and they said I was in a contest? I am a product of this harm!!!I just sent out a money order for almost 50.00 to poetry.com for a book with my poem in it as a gift for my mother. I HAVE BEEN HAD....yes i am screaming, shouting, yelling, and freaking out as I deserve to!!!I am upset that I have fallen for this scam and that I have been abused by it...I thought my poem was from the heart about life and how really prescious it is and they abused it and me!!!! Am I feeling hurt, of course I am, do I feel let down, Yes of course I do,,do I feel ripped off...welllll yesssss!!!:-(...I am pretty upset about this right now as I have called memebers in my family and told them that I had been choosen for a contest and that my poem was going to be published. I even have 3 family members sending me the money for a book for them..Now I have to call them and explain this whole mess and feel bad that they have already sent their money to me in the mail. OOOHHHH THIS MAKES ME MAD!!!!! thanks for posting this..i did check it out from the net and you are right,It was not because I did not believe you, it was because I could not believe what I was reading. I have printed off a copy of the report from 20/20 and I am sending it to my family, all those who have asked for a book.THis is very upsetting to me..what can I help do about this..I will do it, I don't care what it takes at this time!!!!Please if you have any suggestion of what I can do about the money I have already sent in and anything else that I am a victum of with them, please please let me know ASAP. Thank you very much for this post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DALPHINA

Date: 11/28/2000 8:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 20859    was this by any chance at poetry.com? i entered that one and was a semi-finalist in 2 out of three entries.of course, i never pay for the book. it sounded kind-of fishy when the say they publish your work...but you have to pay $49.95 to have a copy. thanks for sharing this information with us.~~shadow girl~~
Date: 11/28/2000 10:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 6317    Yep, I heard about this one, so I submitted a "poem" that went something like this: "Blug alk unit see the art two eggs and a bottle" It went on and on like that, but sure enough I recieved a letter a few weeks later letting me know that I had made in into the finals! What are the odds, I guess they have a high appreciation for nonsense. *Pisces*

Date: 11/28/2000 3:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    I posted something about this to Dalphina's post awhile back. I gave Poetry.com six poems and they not only said I would be in their $49.00 anthology book, but I was runner up in thier contest. Then they asked that I fly myself to some other state (I think it was New York) for the judging. But first I was asked to pay a $300 fee up-front just to be able to attend and supposedly accept my honors, maybe. I laughed at each and every one of their attempts to take my money. I knew a head of time about their scam. They should be taken off the net. They keep your poetry on site for later viewing and that is the only good thing about sending it there.
Date: 11/28/2000 4:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 5443    Just another fine way USM is protecting us members
who are so venerrable to such schemes and scams.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Date: 11/28/2000 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 18111    It's one of the reasons I post here. I have a poem posted here or there on some OTHER web site that promises prizes and or professional review, but those posts are there simply to have them posted. Any one who wants your money in order to view your work, or to publish you, or to send you a prize IS MORE INTERESTED IN YOUR MONEY than in fulfilling their end of the deal.~~~~BIGO>

Date: 11/29/2000 7:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 12436    I think that I've heard about this as well. It's a sad thing what some do to make a little money. They say that you buy the books & sell them to make your money back, but can you really afford to buy that many books {or you would have to sell them at crazy prices to come out even, if that}. I just don't know about some people. Great post, thanks for sharing. Raven

Date: 11/29/2000 9:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 18506    I figured that one out for myself, entered a few, on the net...and in the mail...got the same thing you JUST said...send us money...this one site even promises to meet Montel Williams and go on his show to read...then they send you the "paperwork" you fly to his city, pay for your own hotel room and I believe it was like 1,500 dollars for 2 people to go to this "poetry reading club" where then you would have a chance to be picked...something wierd like that. It was so frustrating. I told my husband I wanted to send in a REALLY BAD poem just to see if they would respond saying" THousands of people have entered but you are one of the few to be selected for our poetry book....Yes, I did figure out this to be a scam, and what a waste of our time and talent!

I submitted it only to see what would happen. Turns out, two weeks later, they send me a letter telling me more or less. "This is an outstanding example of literary prose, you are one of the finalists, eligible to win $10,000!" At first, I wasn't aware of it being a scam, then my mother caught on to it right away, and being excited I posted the news here at USM, and found out that TA was scammed from the same people, and several other USMers mentioned it was a scam as well. What some people will do to make money, its rediculous. But thank you for posting this, many people may not be aware of this yet. No one should fall for it

Date: 11/29/2000 9:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 12759    My best friend loves to write poems. Last month I went to her house ans saw the really happy look on her face. She told me that she had entered a poetry contest and showed me the letter she got back saying that her poem had won one of the various titles! Then at the very bottom, it said that she could purchase the book for forty dollars. Unfortunately, she had already ordered two copies of the book. We later found out it was a scam. Too late. But we too are telling others her story so our friends won't be caught in that position and get tricked!

Date: 11/30/2000 7:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 11348    Wow... that sounds all too familiar. I had my mom read that because about 2 years ago she submitted not only her poem but also my sister's (who was in 6th grade at the time!). Well they sent two letters back informing them they needed and that it would be published and they needed to buy a book.... for both my sister and my mom. So she did. She paid a $100 for 2 books and was so proud, and I knew something wasn't right about that. I read both poems and neither one seemed that good, i hate to say, and yet BOTH were published. WEll we got one out of the 2 books just about a month ago. I wonder why it took so long. My mom was convinced it was no scam but I'd always thought is was and here is more evidence. That was a huge book of sucky poems. Well I'm glad to know USM will never be like that and thank you for posting this.

Date: 11/30/2000 11:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 20603    Hello,
This is Stickmans' mom. I was one of the people that was "scammed" by one of these poetry things. However, for what it is worth, I have really enjoyed seeing my work in print. I have been writing poetry from a very young age, and have never had the nerve to submit anything. The poem that I wrote was written when my DEAR mother-in-law passed away this January. So, just in case someone else may like to read it, here it is.
Cry Not For Me
Cry not for me, for I am not gone,
I am still the one you can count on.
I am the flowers in the spring,
I am a warm summer rain.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the white winter snow.
I am the laughter of a child,
I am your thought when you smile.
I am on the wings of a dove,
Smiling at you from Heaven above.
So cry not for me, for I am not gone.
I am your strength when you cannot go on.

Date: 2/21/2001 4:42:00 AM    I had a feeling this was a con-trick at poetry.com. After all this time I thought someone wanted to publish some of my work, all this bull about what a unique talent we all have! and now it's not just a book, but a cd as-well.
I was on the brink of bying the book the cd which claims to carry all my work,I have sent quie alot of my poems and it's a great shame,I mean the least they could do is give us a copy of the book your work is in and i'm sure that would make most of us very happy. But I think they are just printed to order. A GREAT SHAME.

Date: 4/5/2001 3:53:00 PM    I'M VERY GLAD TO HAVE FOUND THIS SITE, I WRITE POETRY AND I ENTERED TWO POEMS IN THE SAME CONTEST THAT YOU HAVE MENTION AND IN BOTH CASES I CAME IN GRAND FINALIST AND SEMI FINALIST, THE THING THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION VERY QUICKLY WAS WHEN I STARTED TO RECIEVE LETTERS THAT I WAS THE GUEST OF HONOR IN RENO WHERE THERE WOULD BE A BANQUET IN MY HONOR, THEN I WAS GIVEN A LIST OF PRICES ON THE FLIGHTS AND HOTELS. LAST YEAR I RECIEVED A LETTER THAT I WAS CHOSE TO BE JUDGE FOR THE CONTEST AND THIS WAS GOING TO TAKE PLACE ON THE INTERNET, WELL GUESS WHAT, IT NEVER HAPPENED, THEY HAD PROBLEMS. I PULLED OUT ON BOTH CONTESTS. MY MOM WAS UPSET BECAUSE MY WORK IS VERY GOOD, BUT MY GUT FEELINGF WAS TELLING ME THAT THEY HAVE 100'S OF PEOPLE ENTER THEIR CONTEST, THEN THEY GET YOU TO ALLOW THEM TO PUBLISH YOUR POEM IN THEIR BOOK, BY THIS TIME THEY HAVE 100'S OR 1000'S OF POEMS AND THEY CAN NOW SELL THIS BOOK, THE WRITERS MUST PURCHASE EVERYTHING NOT ONE THING IS FREE. I CONTINUED TO RECEIVE MAIL EXPLAINING THAT I WAS A RUNNER UP BUT AFTER THE CONTEST WAS OVER I NEVER RECEIVED ANOTHER PIECE OF MAIL FROM THEM, SO I JUST KEEP WRITING MY POEMS AND I KEEP THEM TO MYSELF, WHICH IS SAD BECAUSE I AM REALLY GOOD.

Date: 4/13/2001 12:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I fell for that scam when I was like 16. I was so excited because they told me that my work rated in the top percentages and that I could have it published. So I paid $60 for the book and they also offered me a copy on cassette which I also bought. What a bunch of crap! The huge book, which was cheaply put together, fell apart years ago. Date: 4/13/2001 6:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 23207    From the comments it looks as if most everyone here has fallen for the same thing. I too have submitted my poems to poetry.com. I have received three letters from them about publishing my poems. I looked at the poems I have published on the site, almost everyone of them are supposed to be in this book (like 9 of them). I have never sent money for the book, but have thought about it simply to see my stuff in print. From what I have heard from people here, I am glad I didn't send them any money. There has to be a better way. It is awful that they scam for both the poetry and the money! Trouble

You could write something totally horrible and probably be told that it's going to be in their book. I never bought the book or cd because I don't think I should have to pay to see my work in their book. They should pay me to have my work in their book. I haven't submitted another poem to them and never will again.

Date: 4/13/2001 2:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 3395    I have a letter infront of me from a poetry contest that I was in last month. I recieved this 2nd letter from them just last week. It says, "I am excited to inform you that in addition to your selection for inclusion in a hardbound anthology, you have also been chosen to be one of 33 poets whose artistry will be recorded professionally as a special part of a new poetry collection.....(etc)I'm writing to get your permission to include your poem, """""", in this highly acclaimed and internationally distributed three-album collection,...."...===Well, I have left out some of that paragraph but that is some of the letter I got. I did not order a copy of the anthology nor did they tell me to order one, thank goodness. Well, they are still printing it even though I did not order the book but I'll probably never see it anyways. I figured, what the hey, I don't care if they print it, I'm just not going to buy it either. Does that make since? Well, I totally agree that there are many poetry scams on the run in this world. However, I am not very sceptical about this contest that I entered because as long as they don't make me pay, I don't really care and as for my poem, I know I have the ability to make more. Thank you all for this important information. Best of Luck and God Bless,

Date: 7/22/2002 1:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 11251    I entered a poem on poetry.com. Now...I get too much mail from those people wanting me to buy some silly thing or another. I think my fave was the one where they would send me a CD of my poem being "professionally" read. geez. i deleted my poem from the site. i will never enter a poem again.
Date: 7/22/2002 1:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 58187    I hear ya on this one. It's a marketable scam. Many people love to hear that their poem is going to be published and then later it's followed by a letter inviting you to Washington D.C. Making you spend hundreds of bucks.

They'll publish a 4 line poem

Cat
Bat
Both are fat

Boom! I have a masterpiece! They love to make you feel like your poem was chosen over everyone elses. It's a load of garbage and I will never trust it
Date: 7/22/2002 2:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 52490    Dalphina, I got a letter back from poetry.com too, but I thought it sounded pretty fishy so I didn't send anything back in including the right to publish my poem. I am glad I didnt now. I hope to have my poetry published someday, but not by crooks like that. Sorry about what happened to you.

Date: 7/22/2002 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 59214    That is horrible! I don't beleive this. Poets pour their heart and soul into their writings. This is mad stupid!

Date: 7/22/2002 4:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 820    That's awful...people taking advantage of others just to get a couple of bucks in their pocket. It makes me angry. Thanks for the warning so we know better than to submit any poetry to these scams.

Date: 7/23/2002 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    To sunflower Mom, I also "won" by having my photo in their book, everything looked official enough but you know where their request went to send in $65.00 for the "coffee table edition" book? In the garbage. They even claim that they will send me royalties everytime someone buys my photo. I dont ever expect to see a dime. This post is good advice, if it sounds to good to be true it usually is. Thanks for the warning.
Date: 7/23/2002 5:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 52736    OMG i thought this was a scam...but i could just never admit it to myself. i entered this competition when i was thirteen i think (nieve and too trusting, i guess you could say) and got my poem published! never had a been sooo happy, because poetry meant everything to me, but then i started to get weird things in the mail...even until present. in "publisher's clearing house" style things would arrive from time to time, but i don't think that i truly realized the possibility of fraud until much later, say within the past year or so. i was crushed...and now i am even more so, but also angry. i was thirteen for goodness sakes!! i didn't understand that someone could and WOULD do that, but now i do, and i think ravenged poets everywhere should join forces and do something about this! it really can't go on!!! it hurts very much that someone would do that to such a young child, building up her hopes for the ultimate let-down. anyway, if you get a chance, PLEASE read my poems and let me know what you think. it would very much help my self-esteem, as i am a bit down at the moment. much love and hugs to all!!! *melancholy_spirit13*
Date: 7/23/2002 6:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 56024    I fell victim to the same thing. well not really a victim i guess. poetry.com has been doing this for years. i sumitted a poem a couple years ago and in the mail it came. but why would i buy a book that my poem was chosen out of so many to be put in? and at 50 dollars no less?- i thought it shoulda been free or at least discounted so i never bought it. then later i found out it was a scam. sigh- oh well.

This was all a scam? My god these people should have their bullcrap "Business" closed, and how could celebrities like "FLORENCE HENDERSON" take part in POETRY.COM conventions? Im sure they know its all a fraud too..Pfft this is DISGUSTING! I dont know if i should tell my mum now :-(

They bought 2 books for 45 dollars each and to this day my mom doesn't believe me when I tell her it was a scam. She says I'm jealous because I didn't get in it... but I didn't enter it! Oh well... if it makes her happy...

Date: 7/28/2002 3:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Yeah I've been on poetry.com. They wanted me to fly to the states to see if I had won. Well I live in Australia and I figured that If I win they can contact me rather than me forking out big bucks to go overseas. If they are exposed maybe they will stop. All we can do is warn innocents with dreams of publishing.

Date: 7/30/2002 12:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 26598    About ten years back I had a poem published and like this post said, I had to buy the book and it was no book store shelves either. That was the first and last poem.
Date: 7/30/2002 1:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 60226    i thinktis is terible. why would people want money in the first place?
Date: 7/30/2002 1:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 48403    well that's pretty horrible for them to do that to a person who put their and talent into that
Date: 7/30/2002 2:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 44448    I know. I get these letters in the mail from places like poetry.com and others, and it annoys me that there are always people trying to scam money away from others. I mean to say , whats the point? what joy do you get from that? Thanks for sharing with us Radman. Lotsa Luv, Kat
Date: 7/30/2002 5:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 56766    I was also taken by Poetry.com. I am ashamed to admite I could be had. Oh, well. Anyway beware of Vantage Press as well. They offer to read your manuscript for free and tell you if they will publish your book, you recieve a contract that requests that you pay in over $7,000 to get it going. I don't think so, thanks anyway. I just don't know about some people anymore!
