I'll ask them if they wan't to work for their food or money! If they say, "Yes". I'll take them to work to wash my cars and company trucks! Then I'll feed them or pay them. I have this one guy that comes in once a week to do odd jobs around the shop! Have a nice day! |

nope! I've been warned by the professors on campus that 99.9% of the time the guys on the courner by campus aren't really homeless. the red cross has a soup line on campus that they do every day at 11:00. we've been told if we want to donate money, donate it TO the soup line.... |

A couple years ago we helped out a family that was supposedly in need. The woman claimed that they had no money for food or firewood for their heater. Our church gave them several hundred dollars. My dad gave them firewood. Me and my sister went through all of our kids old toys. We ended up giving a couple garbage bags full of nice toys the kids did not play with. It was close to Christmas and we wanted to be sure that their kids got gifts. After all that, did they appreciate it? Nope, several weeks later the woman called my mom wanting more money. My mother explained to her that we had done all we could do. The "lady" cussed her and slammed down the phone in her ear. Oh yeah, she also smoked like a freight train. Strange thing to do when your kids are supposedly starving. Sorry so long. |

Hi BusyBee..About three or four summers ago there was this man who always came out with a sign stating that he would work for food,etc..I had seen here there quite a few times but I was always alone so I wouldn't stop..One day,my husband was driving and we passed the man up,but I asked my husband to go back because I wanted to talk to that man and offer him a job..My husband turned and went back..When the man saw that we had turned and came back,he came over to our car with his hand out as if he was expecting a handout..I said to him "Sir..I have noticed you here several times as I passed by and I wanted to ask you exactly what is your problem..Why don't you have a job?..He said to me "I have back problems"..I then said to him,"But I have seen you stand here for hours upon hours and if you had a back problem that would be very painful, because my hubby has back problems and he can't stand like that for such long lengths of time, and you do not look as if you are in any pain" (The way he came to our car and bent down,it was obvious that he didn't have a back problem)..He said."I don't have a car"..I said to him.."Sir,I have a used car for you but you would have to work for it..You could come to our home to do some odds and ends jobs to work of the cost of the car"..He continued making excuses..He says "I don't have a drivers licenses"..I told him that we could pick him up until he earned enough money to get his drivers licenses..As he kept making excuses,I finally got annoyed with him and told him off..I told him that there is no excuse whatsoever except for the fact that he is standing there begging for handout and that some of the people who stops to give him handouts are worse off than he is and he is a disgrace..I told him that I refuse to give our hard earned money to anyone who refuse to try to help themselves and that he should be downright ashamed to be seen in public..I really let him have it..My hubby laughed at me all the way home..He knows that it takes a lot to get me angry and he thought it was so funny to see me that way..But,I was so angry because I had seen this man stand there many times during the summer and everytime I passed him up because I was afraid to stop since I was alone,I would "kick myself in the seat" because I thought I should have the courage to stop and help a poor unfortunate person..There were actually times I couldn't go to sleep thinking of that poor man..(From the looks,he was somewhere in his late 30's)..But when I had offered him a job and a car,he had come up with so many excuses..Anyway..A week later I visited my sister and her daughter was there..I told my sister what went on and my niece said to me.."Aunty..I work in so and so restaurant as a waitress..I have been there for over a year..This restaurant has a bar inside also..She says she knows who I am talking about and said his name..She says that she has also seen him standing there where I had seen him waiting for handout many times..She said that he does that every Thursday and Friday and then he spends much of his time at the bar inside the restaurant where she works. She also said that he is "loaded" because so many stops by where he stands and reaches him money..She says he was better off than she was..She also knew where he lived and she says he pays his rent with the money he begs..She said that he comes into the restaurant dressed in very good clothing..One good thing came out of this though..He sure didn't stand in the same place anymore begging other people's money..He may have went to another city or somewhere, because I saw him there one more time after that and I gave him the dirtiest look and turned my head away from him..He still lives in his home he had bought but he doesn't beg in our town anymore..So..We do have to be very careful who we are dishing our money out to..Some lowdowns as this man doesn't think twice about playing on the compassions of others.. |

I have made it a point not to give them money, but when I lived in Colombia, there were bakeries everywhere, and I would buy them bread and maybe coffee... and when I smoked I would ask if they smoked and give them what I had left of a pack... I quit smoking, but sometimes I would buy half packs and give them to the people, which is probably bad, but having been a smoker I understand how you would forgo food to get a cig... But usually cookies, bread, stuff like that! |

i only give them money if they promise me they won't use it to buy food! seriously, people have a chance of getting money out of me if they tell me the truth. one guy was asking for money for a pack of cigarettes one day and i gave him the change i had in my car and a couple of cigs. same goes with the guys hanging out in front of the liquor store. |

Deer Hart, I am so thankful you wrote this. My friend told me that many proffessional people do this as a second job because they can make more on the corner in a weekend than all week at work! I think the law should ban this behavior. There are shelters and the salvation army we can donate to and they help these people. Its not necessary to beg, theres too many ways to get help. I am proud of the stand you took and I hope if you see him again you will tell him what a fake he is again! BUSYBEE |
