Hey Papi Moreno. Well, in that price range, I'd have to say: Try and find yourself a Toyota 4x4 in a four cylinder. That is, if off-road is your main priority. Those little trucks are killer in the dirt, (for their size).Around here, (Texas) there's a guy that specializes in re-furbishing and re-building them. I'm sure if you look in your area, you may find similiar vendors. Good on gas also. Just my idea. Good luck to you. Write on.... |

Good reply, Kronk. My Mom has a 1999 Toyota 4x4 & it is awesome but I didn't mention Toyotas because they are so expensive! :o) Luv, |

Yo Moreno,
OK...I really only know about trucks you can get in NZ...so my knowledge of US Trucks ain't that crash hot...but I assume what we can get you guys can too...so what ya really need to think about is what you are really looking for in a truck. You say you want something rugged to take off-road...I assume by you saying that you "get to have a vehicle in March" that this will be your first vehicle? Okay then...you really need to dismiss the larger more agressive 4x4s simply because they do require a fair amount of driving experience to really get the most out of them...also, most of the agro 4x4s can also get a little dangerous on the roads in the hands of an unskilled driver...their centre of gravity and generally nose heavy wieght distributions can cause them to be prone to roll over on uncontrolled cornering, or a bit tail-happy if you push them hard on the street...which is fun if ya know what ya doing and are competent with powerslides...but otherwise is 'change ya pants' time if ya know what I mean. If its ya first truck then also steer clear of anything too powerful, V8s etc are great...but again, only if ya know what ya doing, or else that extra power is just a recipe for trouble. I suggest you look for something relatively compact, lightwieght, with probably a maximum of 6 cylinders...check out some Jeep Renegades...fabulous off-roader, good ground clearance yet has a lower centre of gravity than most 4x4s...which means improved and more predictable handling off-road and on-road. Another nice rig to check out are the usual Jappas like the Toyota Surf or HiLux (hopefully ya have them there) they have some reasonably reliable 2litre 4cylinders, which ain't rocket-ships but can still get around...though if you really want some low down torquey off-road grunt then check out the diesels and turbo-diesels in that range...the only major problem with them is that you need to make sure they have been regularly serviced as the Toyota turbo-diesels have been known to pop turboes a bit too early in their lifespan...which is dang expensive to fix. Check out the smaller Toyota RAV4s as well...light wieght, compact 4 cylinders that can still get the job done. Suzuki Vitaras are another small compact and very nimble 4x4...though they are more for the city wannabes who like the look of a 4x4 but ain't planning on getting it dirty any time soon...but still worthy of a look. Nissan Terranos are quite nice as well...especially if ya can score one with the VERY nice LD28T motor...2.8 litre, 6 cylinder, turbo-diesel...nice bullet proof motor which is well suited to the solid bodied Terranos. Basically ya just need to look at a lot of trucks, read up about them, test drive them...and always ALWAYS get them FULLY checked by a professional and ALWAYS get a FULL mechanical warranty with them...other than that it really comes down to what you like...and after all, its YOUR money...so good luck. Peace, |
