What's the point?

OK, I just got done talking to my dad about this car I found that I want. My current car is junk, blue-book value is only $835, but the car dealership is only offering $700 because they go below blue-book on the cars they sell as well. When I get done with school in about 10 months, all the money in my college fund is mine to keep (approx. $12,000 or so)and my dad won't let me take $5,000 out to pay for the car I want. I find this stupid, but my car needs major work, my estimate of repairs needed by looking at prices so far is about $2,700 on the car I currently own. Can anyone tell me what the point is on spending 3 and a half times of what my cars value is to repair it instead of just spending a few thousand more and getting a new car? Even if the repairs were made on my car, in 10 months I'd be lucky if I could get anyone to by my car for what the dealership is offering me. Any thoughts would help me, it's just that this is really upsetting me. Thanks.

Date: 11/12/2001 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 43267    Well, try having a trusted mechanic explain to your dad that fixing the car would cost more than its worth, then Message me cuz I have this GREAT Ford Ranger Pick-up for sale! --Monte
Date: 11/12/2001 8:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 45975    My dad doesn't pay for repairs, my college fund does, and I tried to explain all this to him, but he just doesn't get it. ~PenguinPrincess~

Date: 11/12/2001 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Hi Penguin..Maybe if you could calmly go to your Dad and ask him if he would mind sitting down with pen and paper and show you why he thinks his way is the best way, then just maybe he will then understand where you are coming from..I think sometimes Dad's do not want to admit that they could be wrong and their child could possibly be right..It may take a ittle psychology to bring him around. If you do this, maybe you should let him think it was his idea..Males are like that you know.. Just ask my hubby. :D
Date: 11/12/2001 8:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 23037    youll probable hate me for saying this but, please just respect your fathers decision , someday youll be glad you did, he probable has a reason. good luck...
Date: 11/12/2001 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 5301    ...anyone that has owned an older car and has invested large sums of cash on repairs can tell you that vehicles can get to like thius kind of treatment and will constantly fall apart in order to get more of the same. Older cars get tired, especially if they've been driven hard, have lots of miles under their belt or have been poorly maintained. Most cars are designed to implode after a certain number of years. Been there, done that, done it again and again!
Date: 11/12/2001 8:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 45975    I think maybe the thing that bugs the most about this is that it is MY money, and he's never treated me like his daughter, but to him I'm just someone whose money he can control. There are words that describe how I feel about my dad, but this is a "G" rated site...
Date: 11/12/2001 8:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 45975    My car is a 91 and has 166,582 miles on it (not noraml knowledge, we just looked at it when was parked last to see exactly how many miles are actually on it)
Date: 11/12/2001 8:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    Cars become money pits and when it becomes more costly to keep repairing it than the car is worth then it's definately time to look into a more reliable car *Notice how I didn't necessarily say 'new'* I think if your father doesn't want you to get a newer car there is a reason for it, I noticed by your profile your 20...it's your money do what you feel is best with it. I think your dad is acting this way because it's just one more thing he can hold over your head and keep you under his thumb.....
Date: 11/12/2001 8:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 45975    Thanks Becky, unforunately, my dad is in control of my money until I turn 21, I've tried getting my money into someone else's name and I even seeked help from lawyers, but I've learned to deal with the fact that I'm going to have to wait until I'm 21 to get that money in my name becaus emy dad isn't going to let anyone else control it.
Date: 11/12/2001 10:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    eeeeeeeeek! you've got daddies name on all your money too huh? I feel your pain believe me!
