Sur5R and Kethria, thanks for your replies..that's what I mean, why do people make such a big deal over the color of our skin? Who cares? Why not be proud of us being human and celebrating our cultures and heritage instead of always dividing society according to stupid skin classifications? And anyway, no one is white like paper or black like coal. Eveyrone is just human |

You know, I really don't like "african-american". The black people I know are no more african-american than I am irish-american, because my great-grandfather came from Ireland. It seems the "whatever-american" title shouldn't apply after the first or *maybe* second generation. I have never thought that the "catagories" made sense. For that matter, I never even thought of hispanics as a separate race from "whites" whoever they may be. I grew up with a best friend whose father was hispanic. I never considered her different in any way, except I envied her ability to tan!LOL I think the world would be so much better off if we quit catagorizing everyone. |

I would presume that you are an american, but why call yourself so. If we are all alike why not say you are a citizen of the universe, because to call yourself anything else excludes somebody somewhere, this is also a form of racism which everyone uses, showing that the colour of someone's skin is not the only thing racism is based on *Farleys* |

That's exactly what I mean, Farley. Why not just say, "I am American? Or Human?" But many, many times, in the news, T.v. shows, etc. we are divided according to our skin color. I don't think it will ever end...racism, that is. However, I believe everyone should celebrate their culture, including Europeans too. |

well firstly, it is a means of a racial identification, we're able to indentify through our eyes. if we were not able to indentificate then our minds will never evolve and learn in the way we do. As far as the prejudice, its not prejudice at all, unless you were voluntarily making a racist remark, in which case its different. Speaking of, 99.7% of the population of Japan is off asian race, by those means, people will not identify themselves as asians but continually name the minority few. Face distinctions is given to advantagement for us as instincts. if you have ever done sociology class, you'll find the identifying part of our brains in use. now to your question its not 'WHY' it is infact "HOW" as why has no definition of why individual people would say it but when asking how its the use of the human mind playing its instinct rules that is neccasary in survival. (if we were to have no means of identifying then we would eventually become rogue, become victims and we'll be eventually extinct" |

also, the psycoligical side of this debate will answer "why don't we celebrate eachtohers clutures" this is acheivable but its not as maintanaible, when there is individuality then that won't always be the answer, there will always be prejudice in social classes. people want a happy community but its unachhievable because of our independent ways. Social classing isn't wrong its how us humans work and every animal as well we're no exception. yes we're human, but thats no answer to think we're all ONE.because we'll be different forever and its more then likely to be the case of judgement and of moral issues. and we will never think the same as the next person, its the natural order of the ways of communities, keeping separation but comprimising would be best . uniting is never the case because it will always flare up debateble topics. I don't care how people social categorise races or religion its all individual basis. being made with a free mind will never bring a nation of one as our opinions are farly varied. it is only in vision it exists. critiscism and classing is a forever ending line |

White people are not "white" They're different shades of pink, olive, and beige. Black people are varied shades of brown or tan. Some light skinned black people are lighter than the darkest white people. Look how dark the people in India are. They're dark brown but considered white people. What's up with the "African American" label? Which part of Africa are we talking about? Egypt is in Africa. Egyptians aren't black. They're like the people in India, they're dark brown white people. But they're Africans. Why wouldn't an Egyptian who becomes an American Citizen be an African-American? What about South Africa? What about a white racist who comes to American and becomes a citizen? Now would that tick some black people off if he refers to himself as a "African-American"? Most blacks in America are a mixture, with ancestry going back to the days of slavery and have every kind of combinations of races within them. I get in some rather heated discussions with the RIDICULOUS white supremacy people! Most these nutcases have not a clue that just maybe their great grandmother was a black woman, right!? And the "Native Americans"? When Columbus came here, he thought he had reached "India" (Called: Hindustan at that time 1492) and he was Italian. He didn't speak or write good spanish, so in his written accounts he called them Indians, "Una gente in Dios". A people in God. IN GOD. In Dios. The phrase "Native American" was invented by the U.S. goverment Department of the Interior in 1970. It is an inventory term used to keep track of people. Labels, Labels, Labels......all can be traced back somewhere, and for many different reasons. |

I'm hispanic. I just say that because I'm very mixed. I'm italian, cuban and purto rican. It's not a big deal. No one says it because of a "me vs them" mentality. Every one is not the same. Why can't people say that they are black if they are black, or if they're white if they ARE white? It's not just your skin color, it's who you are. Isn't an irish person white? Isn't an african american black? Isn't a purto rican hispanic. Theyre just names of groups. If you are so aginst groups why would you rather people say that they are irish? isn't irish a group too? Everybody is SOMETHING, no one is the same. It's just a way to say who you are. |

I cant add much more than anyone else here has... the only thing I can say is that I agree with Dr. Dopey here... it is because of our EYES and the way we identify. I think there are some times reasons for saying black, white, yellow, red... or whatever label that the race chooses to be called... I dont find offense in any of them, as long as everyone has respect for all the races... God made ALL of us |

i don't think of it as white-like your skin is white like paper..but white as a lighter color.. Whats wrong with calling people white/black.. i really don't see anything wrong with it..you say why not call yourself caucasion..well why not call yourself white? they are just just describing words..they dont' litteraly mean like paper white, or coal black..hope i don't sound rude. |

There is no such thing as an "African American." You're either one or the other. Which are you? Where are you from and where do you live? Which country do you call home? As far as colors go, I agree with you. None of us (not even albinos) are white like paper and none of us are black like coal. I suppose those are just easier ways to describe it in a general sort of way rather than trying to analyze it and determine that your skin is the color or papyrus or capaccino or whatever. LOL.. Who knows? Who cares? |

In Spirit we are Equal, but in Flesh we are seperated because God instructed it to be this way. God seperated the Language, the Races. God Chose a race of People over other Races to Bring His Only Begotton son through. God instructs to marry within your own Fleshly Race. But God has Made us Equal in Spirit. The Problem is, People are always trying to do in Flesh, What God has done in Spirit. But Flesh refuses to Bow! Therefore Flesh is going to be Distroyed. |

Haadam, you probably aren't christian, because I have never read in the bible that one race is better than another. The reason he seperated the languages is because one person led almost everyone around him. He thought that he was better than God. So God made different languages to disrupt communication. And it doesn't say anywhere in the bible exactly what race Jesus is. But he was prbably not white because it said that he had bronze/golden skin- most people overlook that |

Well... let me think of how to say what I am thinking-- I once posted sonmething about if black people can call themselves African American when most of them didn't even come from africa themselves then why don't we "white" people start calling ourselves European American. Seems silly, right? I think that saying "white" or "black" keeps it simple. But as I read your post, it does sound kinda silly... |

Thanks for the replies guys. Dr.Dopey, The Thinker you made great points. Very true. I guess what I am trying to say is this, referring to a post I have read earlier as to why would it be a controversy if there is a white history month? See, the word "white" is vague. You would have to include Hispanics and Indians too, right? There is black history month but they don't include people from India who are dark-skinned too? |
