"Toamh? Toamh!" Gautr knocked against the door. He heard a clicking inside, as the door was unlatched.
"Gautr? What are you do--"
"I told Zandr about Jadit." Gautr cut Toamh off as he pushed into the house. "She is writing the notes now, both to our father, and Jadit."
"Jadit? What does she have to do with this?" Gautr whipped his head around to see Denen and Yvan sitting at a table. It was Denen who had spoken, her curious eyes flaming. Jadit was one of her best friends.
"Jadit and I...we..." Gautr stuttered, "She's pregnant."
"And you...the father?" Denen asked, her eyes widening as she understood. Gautr nodded, "Ay."
"Gautr, but she's only 16 cycles, the both of you."
"It's no use to explain myself, what's done is done, can we drop the subject?" Gautr spoke harshly, even surprising himself.
"Na---" Yvan quickly covered his sister's mouth; she bit him in response.
"Have you made all your settlements?" Yvan asked, "Are you ready?"
"Ay, I only had one settlement to make." Gautr answered.
"My parents are out with San and Kantr," Toamh was referring to his younger sister and brother. The two were 8 and 12 cycles, respectively, and Toamh's parents had taken them to the market to see a magery-show. "They won't be back until the moon is overhead."
"A magery-show?" Denen thought out loud, "I'd nearly forgotten! I brought this to show you earlier, but I forgot!"
From her waist-bag, Denen pulled out a small book. It looked ages old, the cover was ripped off and the pages were yellowed.
"It's a book on Shadarh." She announced, laying the book on the table. "Shadarh?" The three boys looked at her, confused.
"Shadow walking, it's a gift Shaderen have. The reason why we are banished from the Empress's lands, though the gift has long been forgotten by most Shaderens, especially since many of the pure Shaderens are wealthy and don't have a need for Shadarh." Denen smiled suddenly, "but this book gives exercises and hints, we could all learn how to shadow walk!"
"Wait, I'm confused, shadow walking?" Gautr asked.
"Look, Yvan and I have already learned." With that, Denen and Yvan stood up from their chairs and backed into the darker corner of Toamh's home. As they did so, Gautr saw their features begin to fade and seem to become part of the walls. Slowly, they grew darker until only the color in their eyes could be seen."
"That is amazing!" Gautr exclaimed. Toamh was speechless as his eyes scanned the dark wall.
"Isn't it?" Denen stepped out into the light, her brother right behind her. "If we know how to do this, then we are far less likely to get caught in the Empress's Lands!"
"Ay, but how long does it take to learn?" Toamh asked, picking up the book.
"Well, once you have the idea down, it's easy. It's in our blood. Even Zandr can do this, and she doesn’t look like a Shaderen at all," Yvan answered.
"I'm going to go back home now, may I take this book with me? Maybe Zandr and I can learn tonight, and you can teach Toamh?" Gautr asked as he took the book from Toamh's hands. Denen nodded.
"Agre, we will see you tomorrow. But Gautr?" Denen called to him; Gautr turned around, his hand on the door-latch. "Think about what you are doing." A cold stare slipped onto Gautr's face and he left the home, slamming the door behind him.
