The Orgin of Bloody Mary

"Mary Tudor, first daughter of Henry VIII became queen of England. Queen Mary, who was Catholic like her mother Catherine of Aragon, firmly resolved to make the English nation official Roman Catholic again. We who are accustomed to freedome, can scarcely imagine being forced, on penalty of death, suddenly to change our religion. About 300 people who refused to obey "Boody Mary," as this queen came to be called, died for their convictions. Two thirds of the martyrs were Protestant clergymen - among them were Cranmer, Riley, and Latimer. As Latimer burned at the stake, he said: "We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England as I trust shall never be put out." Mary only strengthened her oppenents. Such sceneces as the burning of High Latimer became an eternal flame in the pages of Book of Martyrs. "

I found this in my World History book, and I thought it was really interesting...! I wonder where we got the idea of calling Bloody Mary to the bathroom mirror at midnight though :) *sandghost*

Date: 1/23/2002 6:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 45897    i thought she was called bloody maryu cause she bathed in blood of virgins or soemthing. well i dunno. great post!

Date: 1/23/2002 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 47618    Actually this is an ENTIRELY different Bloody Mary. Mary Tudor has no association with the Bloody Mary of legend except for the fact that their "name" is the same. That is why there is no logical explanation for the whole legend of the calling her to the mirror...two different people. Also, the bloody bather was Elizabeth Bathory. What a woman! Murdered young girls and bathed in their blood for she believed it made her younger. Atleast she was put to a stop.

Date: 3/2/2002 10:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 50049    bloody mary= mary worth. like the other person said... mary worth was real, and killed slaves that were freed to the north and was said to use them in her satanic rituals. eventually she was burned, but where her body was buried is unknown. she used to live by gurnee, il, if you're familar with the area. rumor has it she was either buried on her plantation or in st. patricks cemetary. farms and later houses that were burned over her plantation all buuurned to the ground. definitly creepy. oh, and this is all fact because i learned it in english class .

The pretty maids were the nuns that she returned to England under her rule)
