You can feed garter snakes meal worms and live crickets. Be sure if you get one that you purchase it from a pet store because if one is caught in the wild it will mostly die from shock, most of the ones in the pet stores are from hatchlings from domesticated breedings. Consider an iguana, I have two and have had them for over six years. Much more interesting than a snake ( I have had my share from garden snakes to reticulate pythons) iguanas are much more enjoyable. If you take the lizard route be sure to purchase the ultraviolet light for warmth and feed it a balanced diet of fruits and veggies "daily" |

I have had Snakes all my Life from Garter Snakes,to Boa's to a 21 ft. long Reticular Python...They are a very easy to keep and do not require a walk every day LOL...If you want a Snake from a pet store I would suggest the first be a Milk Snake as they are very Mild Mannered and very easy to keep...You will need a Tank appropriate to the size of the snake your purchase,a bowl big enough for the snake to get into, they love to lay in warm water,a water bowl,a cave-like structure for them to curl up in,a Heat Rock or Heat Lamp and a cover for the tank as snakes are Great escape artist...A snake must be kept warm becuz if their body temp gets too low they will go into shock and die...I don't really care for Iguana's becuz you need to buy one of substancial size, the small ones tend to choke on food alot of the time...Garter snakes can in fact eat mice depending on the size of the snake in comparison to the mouse...A snake can unhinge his Jaws to swallow a big food source, they then do something that looks like a YAWN to realign their jaws again...My Retic at 21 ft.,would eat two 13 lb. Rabbits within a 8 day period...Right now I have a Tarantula and they are pretty easy to care for as well, they eat pinky's and crickets and do not deficate so no clean up LOL...Whichever you chose I suggest you first by a Book and learn as much as you can so the Pet you finally do choose, will be well cared for...I Remain In Spirit, |
