Cigarettes!

I just heard on the news that the price cigarettes in New York could go up to seven dollars or more in the near future. They are trying to prevent teen smoking. I started smoking about a year ago, when I was seventeen. A older friend of mine started bringing to to the bus stop. That's where it all started for me. I kept saying that I wasn't hooked, but it turned out that I was. The bad part is I got hooked on menthol. I finally got off of those, but I am still smoking. I don't think raising the price is going to stop teen smoking. What do you think? What is the highest price you would pay for cigarettes?

Date: 2/14/2002 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    Well, Move to Alabama.. lol... the highest pack here is like $3.50 I think.. :) *huggles* Love, Amanda
Date: 2/14/2002 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 46014    Well, I quit smoking last October, I'm very proud of myself! When I was in England cigarettes were about $6 a pack and I was smoking a pack a day!
Date: 2/14/2002 9:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    CONGRATS Andalucia!! :)
Date: 2/14/2002 9:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 277    In Illinois they have a law that if a teen is caught smoking they can be issued a ticket and have to pay a $100 fine for underaged smoking. My nephew is 16 and was fined a few months ago. He still hasn't stopped and my sister had to pay the fine, because my nephew blew his paycheck already. It hasn't stopped him from smoking and he still hasn't paid my sister back. I don't think raising the price will stop kids from smoking. It will stop adults who have bills to pay, house payments and children to support though! If the price goes up here in California I will definitely quit. It's too expensive.
Date: 2/14/2002 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 277    My husband and I spend about $32 a week on a carton of cigarettes, both of us smoke.
Date: 2/14/2002 9:17:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48877    Congrats! it takes real will power to stop smoking. I want to, but it's just so hard. I think it wouldn't be so hard if my hisband didn't smoke. I'm not sure what the most expensive price per pack here is, but the cheapest is about a dollar ten.
Date: 2/14/2002 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 24963    Well here i generally pay about $2.70 a pack. Or if i get to the smoke shop i pay $1.60 for cheap smokes that aren't too bad. My limit is over $3 a pack. Alot of places around here have smokes over $3. I just go to the next place untill i find them cheaper LOL.
Date: 2/14/2002 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 46704    Here in Washington they are right around $5 dollars a pack... I'm currently trying to quit. I don't think I would spend more than $5! Cloudfire
Date: 2/14/2002 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 27004    Well, the prices for the brand I smoke... NewPort is about $5 right now. I agree, the price won't make much of a difference. I remember when it was like $2.50 and I thought that was alot...LOL
Date: 2/14/2002 9:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    Right now here in New Brunswick, Canada, cigarettes are anywhere from $6.95-$7.50 a pack...so Im used to paying outrageous prices..xoxo
Date: 2/14/2002 9:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 33517    Right now where I live they are $6.00 and something.....It is a big price to pay..They were up to almost 7 dollars a pack at one point in time. I don't think it matters how much smokes are.....If a teen wants them they will get the money for them...It wouldn't matter if they cost 11 dollars a pack.....they will get them.....Luv Ya!!!
Date: 2/14/2002 9:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    hmmm I always said I would quit when they reached two dollars.... well that didn't work! they are 4.31 here for generic... but the reservation sells them for 2.05..... I think we should be taxed like there is no tomorrow!!! If I had to pay that much well, I would probably try harder to be a non smoker.
Date: 2/14/2002 9:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 44850    something that i find odd about the idea of cigarettes, is that smoking was once seen as luxury, and mostly the upper class (ie. scott fitzgerald type) and now . . . the stereotype is quite the opposite (being a smoker, i am completely tired of being treated like i am dirty ... :P ) and now, the prices go up to try to stop it . . . . i just think its quite the odd twist .... hmmm..............
Date: 2/14/2002 9:37:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48877    I know what you mean 44850. I go to the library in the mornings sometimes and I smoke before I go in and it seems like all the people who are outside waiting for it to open with me move away. One time this guy gave me a weird look and said "smoking your life away, ughh".
Date: 2/14/2002 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 16950    Oh wow! EXCELLENT point, Sexxxxy Penguin! Now ya got me thinkin'. :o) Love & hugs,
Date: 2/14/2002 9:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 22852    lucky for me they are still just over $2.oo a pack. But since I have been smoking for 20 years I wish the prices would go up to $10.00 a pack.. maybe then i could quit. Starting smoking was the worst thing I have ever done and I pray everyday that kids never start.
Date: 2/14/2002 10:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 20576    I am the only one in my family that doesnt!!! i am surrounded by it and they second hand is worse then first, luckily for me my boyfriend doesnt smoke and u cant smoke inside work so i dont smell it there eiter, that bad part is that some smell diff and i noticed when my mom changed her brands because its getting so expensive. My brother tried to quit too and he just doesnt care right now, but later in life he will want to but it will be too hard then. Good luck to all that are trying to quit, Just think about how fresh your breath will smell when you kiss someone and how your hands clothes and hair wont smell like smoke. How wonderful the difference is.. hugggs and licks :P
Date: 2/14/2002 11:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 48858    Smoking stinks...but I do it, hoorah! Anyway, in the good ole state of MI, it's about $3.50-$4. If the price EVER gets to $7, that'd be it for me. And the high prices won't get teens to stop, please, they ARE the big spenders in America. Why do you think everything is marketed to them? They can always get Mommy and Daddy to lend them cash and most can make more than me working at McDonalds. What else do they have to spend their money on? I didn't start until I was 18, lucky me, but I know some who started at 10 and 11. Maybe the parents should keep better track of their chillins. That's how I never got away with it...just a thought ~*~Lievout~*~
Date: 2/14/2002 11:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 47235    WOW. When I started smoking (at 15) cigarettes were only $1.10 tax included. Now I buy them at close to 4 bucks a pack. I always say when they hit 5 i'm quitting. I don't think so. I think they'll be 5 bucks real soon, and I'm not ready to stop. 'Razzles'
Date: 2/14/2002 12:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48877    You all make good points. Thanks for your replies!
Date: 2/14/2002 12:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 8184    Great achievement Andalucia! =^_^= Well, I never intend to smoke and maybe these high prices will make others think twice (yeah right!) and prevent them from starting.
Date: 2/14/2002 12:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 12216    depends on how high they raise the price. i think that's a good idea and it could work. Oh lord, my friends would so kill me if they found out i said that.lol. I don't smoke but all my friends do. Needless to say, I did try them and i about threw up, they just taste nasty to me and i refuse to do them.
Date: 2/14/2002 12:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 12216    I'm also the designated driver of my clique too. i don't drink either. in lamons terms my friends call me the group goody goody. *rolls eyes* I'm sorry if I actually perfer to smell fresh air instead of inhaling alcohol & smoke. Just doesn't seem to appeal to me very much.
Date: 2/14/2002 1:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    That's expensive! I don't smoke, but I don't think they should be that high. It's partially due to a failing attempt to get teens to stop smoking and also greedy lawyers sueing tabacco companies. Because of new laws tobacco companies get taken money away from them for anti-smoking commercials on tv. Those commercials aren't cheap so that's where some of the money is going. I think that's wrong, I say let the people smoke with out litteraly taxing them to death.
Date: 2/14/2002 2:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 16069    They arent raising prices to prevent teens from smoking. They raise money so they can make more money. Their greedy.
Date: 2/14/2002 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    about 3.00 a pack for brand name and 1.50 for generic in tennessee
Date: 2/14/2002 10:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 1334    when i started smoking ciggs were 1.10 a pack when they went up to 2.00 I said I was quiting, guess what I still smoke. when they went up to 3.00 I said I was quitting guess what I still smoke. when thay went to 4.00 I said the same. I still smoke. I pay 4.95 a pack now so I do not think it is the price that would make me quit. I have to want to quit and right now I dont want to. ...
Date: 2/18/2002 1:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 49354    I don't smoke and I never will, but if I was ever addicted to something like nicotine, I would probably pay however much they charged.
Date: 8/8/2002 2:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    good god! lol best route just don't start ;) I wouldn't pay anything for them quite frankly!
Date: 9/20/2002 9:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 19927    oh wow
Date: 9/28/2005 6:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    Ugh..Smoking..I hate it.
