Speedy Gonzales Censored in U.S.

You might have heard that the thought police have censored the cartoon rodent Speedy Gonzales. Now you will laugh, laugh, laugh when you find out where Speedy is a huge hit.

First, some background. The censors at Cartoon Network are the ones who deemed Senor Gonzalez too offensive for P.C.-crazed America to handle. The network nabbed rights to the old Warner Brothers cartoons in 1999 and refuses to show them here or let anyone else show them.

"Speedy's association with a coterie of drunken Mexican mice who lounge around the village, and his lazy cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, portrays Mexicans in a bad light, the network believes,".

"We're not about pushing the boundary," said Cartoon Network flack Laurie Goldberg. "We're not HBO. We have a diverse audience, and we have an impressionable audience."

And here's the kicker: Speedy is a huge hit south of the border, where he's broadcast by the hypocritical Cartoon Network Latin America. Apparently someone forgot to tell the Mexicans they should whine and moan about a cartoon.

Date: 4/1/2002 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    OMG! Diversity has gotten a bit off the track... I loved Speedy Gonzalez and just thought that the mice were slow because they took all of life slow and easy. I never thought they were drunk...
Date: 4/1/2002 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    This IS Hilarious!! I am amazed. I remember this cartoon so well, but never thought about it being offensive. I always thought Speedy was portraying Mexican's ....Love,

Date: 4/1/2002 8:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Penny, you know now that I think about it, I never knew the mice were drunk either, I just thought they were lazy as you said. Who's next?? Pepe la Pew? Doesn't he sterotype the French as being stinky and oversexed?
Date: 4/1/2002 9:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I used to watch that show. What are they also getting rid of Bugs bunny too? Because I remember them going into bars in there with Yosimite Sam. On the Spanish chanel you can still watch those cartoons, I just don't know Spanish so I can't understand what they are saying.
Date: 4/2/2002 10:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 8941    lol...Speedy is one of my favorites...and that skunk...lol
