And Then He Just Rode On **Frankenstein

I understood why they called it the "wild west." Nearly anything went unless you were foolish enough to do it in front of the Marshal or one of his Deputies. Now that I consider it, even in that situation, almost anything often went with no questions asked. It was simply the way the town was run at that time. There was authority to an extent but it was still virtually lawless in many regards. Things certainly do have a way of changing over the years.

My family and I had had a falling out of sorts with our nearest neighbors and there seemed to be no resolution in sight. It was such a little thing it's really not worth even going into all of the details here. Let's just say that it was a dispute over property lines. That makes it simple enough.

The old man had a son whom everyone called "Steed" for some reason. I was a bit surprised when he strolled into the saloon that day. Several folks spoke to him when he came in but he ignored them. Some of them even called him by name or at least his nickname. His focus remained on me though as I sat alone at my table nursing a glass of whiskey.

I knew what was on his mind so I stood up. I noticed a muscle twitch in his cheek and I knew exactly what that meant. I drew my revolver and fired twice. It felt good to shoot him down but I hadn't done that at all. I couldn't believe that I had missed him altogether and that I was the one who had been hit. As I lay bleeding to death on that sawdust covered floor, I saw him wink at a bar girl and casually stroll out through the swinging doors. What a cool customer. I'm sure I heard him whistling a campfire song as he rode off into the distance.

Jimmy does some wonders with sheets of thin pinewood! I hope he makes me a nice box and I'm sure he will! How many has he laid to rest here in this desert? Who knows? Who really cares? We abandoned using "Boot Hill" ages ago. Put them in deep enough and the buzzards won't get them. It's okay. I really don't think they know or care much where their bodies are by that time.

Like I said, times sure do change! Campfires, the moon, lanterns and stars are no longer the only lights at night around here. The sky's always quite bright right over the mountain there. I think they call it something like "Las Vegas" nowadays.

Date: 4/2/2002 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Quite a good story line, I bet many died like that in those days, always the victor until the that realization sank in, just a side comment, this story brought back a true story I think you may appreciate, my great-great grandpa was born in 1896, not so long ago but when you grow up out in the hills without mother or father, civilization can be far away, later when he married my granny they had three girls, the oldest my grandmother, a neighbor who lived up in a "hollar" somewhere near exposed himself to the girls and had other intentions as well, they got away, and there being no phones or law for miles around, anger got the best of grandpa, he took his gun and went looking for the guy, he did shoot him but luckily the guy didn't die, when the sheriff came looking for Grandpa he was already in the hills and there he stayed for awhile until the "heat was off". He was never brought to court or served any time, the sheriff as well as others said they most lokely would have done the same thing, later he met up with the guy "in town" who apologized and said he knew he was wrong and certainly deserved to be shot. Quite a perspective they had back then, my grandpa slept with a gun under his pillow till he died at 96. Never paid to trust anyone to much, he would always say, luckily we had enough sense to never mess with his guns.
