Sky Surfer, the rescue teams and police departments only helicopter lifted itsself from the giant X next to the Sherriff's quarters early as possible the next morning. They were not only searching for Holly, but the convicts at the same time. The Pilot, Cliff and his Co-Pilot, Jerry, both had 20/20 vision. An asset on their job. With binoculars to assist them and radio equiptment to direct them, they were ambitiously primed and ready. Figuring it would be an all day job, they had the ham and turkey sandwiches Jerry's wife had made for them that morning. The sky was not as clear as they would have prefered though. In fact they had been prewarned of a cold front and storm approaching. As it was, a mist had settled in the valleys.
Laura had been put up at Hudson's Best Motel, with a gaurd planted next to her door. She laid on the comfortable bed, waiting for her father to arrive. She felt as if she were already grieving for Holly, even though there was not yet any evidence Holly had been injured or killed. Still, Laura cried her heart out, still truamatized from her ordeal.
Just as Omstead and his companion, Ben, were mustering up enough alertness to drive out of the woods, they heard the helicopter in the distance. However, for some reason, Sky Surfer wisked right over them, perhaps not seeing the top of the silver 4WD as it was sheltered by the trees. However, they both knew they were at high risk of being captured and thrown back in the 'Slammer'.
Jack and Karl had given a deputy the telephone number to the room they would be waiting in at Best Motel. Because of a lack of proper communication, neither man or Laura knew the other ones were there. Laura kept trying to reach Jack, then Karl by phone to no avail. Finally, once when Laura peered out of her window to the parking area below, she spotted Jacks white pickup, parked in two spaces as he always did to protect his new paint job. Elated, she flew to the door of her room and told her personal gaurd of her find. He radiod in for an approval before calling the main office to find out which room Jack was in.
They all joined in hugs and kisses before the guys found out what had happened the day before. How come nobody had told them? Then they all prayed together for Holly, who was still missing.
A half day later, they discovered their prayers had not been answered in the way they had hoped. Omstead and Benjamin had been captured. Ben finally admitted that Omstead had shot Holly three times. He directed them to their make-shift camp, where Holly was found under her doggies blanket. She had died during the night from shock, blood losss and exposure.
Jack, Karl and Laura were devestated to say the least. But Laura knew she would become an avid camper and outdoorswomen. In memory Of her dear friend, Holly, who had always loved the same.
