I think greed, envy, and covetness are part of human nature, and that these traits breed hate. Love and Light |

I definately think it is taught. I had to work very hard to overcome the prejudice thoughts of my father throughout life. He's a bigot, and a racist, and until I was a teenager, I didn't even realize he was wrong until I got started to realize the pain that those traits cause. I still have to bite my tongue when I see him to this day, because he is stubborn and had all of us convinced it was his way or the hard way. Children don't even know what "hate" is, unless someone shows them. That's not to say that left to your own devices you will never dislike anyone, but at least then it will be because of "cause and effect" so to speak, rather than a sick sense of tradition |

We are not born to hate, we are taught hatred.

I think it is taught... just because I do not understand something different from what I know, doesn't mean I react to it in anger or fear!! :) |

This is an age old question. William Golding asked pretty much the same thing in the Lord Of The Flies. I personally think that as we grow the people around us influence our behaviour. Some are born with a mean streak but hate is a feeling, not a natural tendency. |

Well hate is not taught, we all can hate a specific person. When someone is racist, maybe it is taught because it's just not natural. How could one person HATE one specific race of people? The whole race? That's not something that one can come up with on thier own. |

I believe Hate is a very powerful emotion, and it could be either taught or natural, depending on the circumstances.I believe fearing the unknown is sometimes believed to be hate. But who knows.... |

Yep....I believe hate is taught or learned. I have yet to see a baby born who is hateful. Hate stems from fear. So whenever I see someone say they hate something, I know there is an underlying cause going on there and it isn't just as simple as they have been wronged. I believe that racism and bigotry is taught and is fear based....other things like hatred that is a form of jealousy is probably something a person learned along the way as a coping mechanism. Hatred usually comes from a person who is afraid that something within themselves that they do not like is being uncovered. |

I don't think it's taught intentionally. I think it's LEARNED incidentally. JMO |

Your teacher said hate arises from our fears. Ask him where do our fears come from, and why do we fear certain people? It is because we are taught to fear those people. We are taught that certain things are right or wrong, and we learn to hate what we percieve, or have been taught as wrong. The anger that we use to show our hate though is a natural emotion. |

I agree with you, I think it is a little of both to. We can be taught by example, but we as humans also have the ability to develope and form our own opinions and Ideas.. |

I do think that part of the fear that causes hatred is fear of learning that one is wrong when they have held to their belief that they were right and are questioned. People tend to think that the definition of fear involves someone coming after you or you running away from someone....but you can also fear yourself and fear revelations about yourself that to you may seem to destroy the foundations you stand on. I think this type of fear is both taught and learned. Taught by those who have the same fear and pass it on......and learned as a self defense, coping mechanism. |

Warrior Spirit: i think that my teacher was saying was that we fear what we don't understand because of some kind of survival instinct. when we don't know what something is we also don't know whether its here to help or to hurt us. so we act in fear out of a need to want to protect our selves and our loved ones. at least thats how i interpreted it. -disgruntaled angel- |

Angel, when we hate fear something we do not understand, we should not hate it. We should educate ourselves, thus ridding ourselves of that fear. When we understand something, yet still fear it, then we must face that fear straight on, or it will constantly be a point that angers us, and causes hatred. |

warrior: i *didn't* say that hating/fearing because of ignoranse was ok, because it isn't. but just because its not ok doesn't mean it doesn't happen. i was just saying that this is one of the reasons that some people act hurtfully towards others. -disgruntaled angel- |

basically, just because we shouldn't doesn't mean we won't. but your right, we *should* try to learn what we don't understand so we *don't* hate it. -disgruntaled angel- |
