Women are so emotional and those novels seem to go into the story with that in mind. The angle is just to askew for most men. There is nothing there we can identify with on a personal level. Sure, we can be romantic but we see things through much different eyes than women do. Romance novels just aren't interesting to men for those reasons and I'm no exception. If I'm going to read, I'd much rather it be something to spark my imagination like maybe Stephen King. |

Okies..I am female, as you know..heehee..but I can give you my take on why I think men dont read them!! Heehee...I think its because they see how the male character in the book is, and how the women swoon at him and they KNOW they could never measure up, so they are jealous and they dont want to read it!! heehee...Love you guys! *evil grins*...xoxo |

Farleys always says that they are full of emotional clap-trap and he doesn't find them interesting in the least. He prefers something with a little more danger and excitement (male view of this), although having said that there has been a degree of romance in some of the sci-fi books of his that I have read. I think men feel that it is not a 'masculine' thing to do to be caught reading a 'sloppy' book. |

The cast is off my leg/foot...BUT....I have more damage than they originally thought so I am off work for the next 4 weeks at least <sulk..I'm bored> I have to wear a support bandage during the daytime and be VERY careful not to get it knocked and end up displacing the fractured bits of bone. |

Well Red, maybe it's no realism of men? Their depiction in these books make them feel inadequate for some reason? I don't know.. more research needed.. |

From a female perspective: Sappy, glorified, unreal, unlikely, trashy, pulp, overly sexual, anti-heroine, bad plots/weak storyline.... |

Hey Persephone, that is your opinion, but in today's romance era, the romance writers now cater to who buys the books, and those are a big percentage of highly educated, discerning women who do not want to read poorly slapped together work that uses stale material to stand upon. Today, romance authors are utilizing high powered professions in both hero and heroine. Sometimes the hero and heroine are both just normal people living normal lives. And it isn't just meet, fall in love, have kids anymore. Sometimes, the hero and heroine do not even end up together, or one of the main characters dies... It happens... Stay away from the formula romances, ie, Silhouette, and Harlequin, try some Dell, Penguin Putnam, and Love Spell. They have high standards and also hold contracts with very highly intelligent writers. |

Hi Monkey, I am female and don't read them. Sorry that I can not give you a take on a man's perspective....I prefer books with a twist and challenge. Now, I am not saying that romance is impossible but highly unlikely in my reading circle. |

I never read them. They're written by women with fantasies in their head. It's a woman's excuse to read some soft porn or close to regular porn. I'd rather be like the men and just watch the movie...LMAO! |

well, I am not a man, but I will tell you anyway....romance novels are normally cheesy and imo quite predictable - girl meets boy, girl can't have boy, major event happens, girl fianally gets boy!! I prefer real life books, much more interesting, I think...Trekkie. |

not a guy, but i quit the "good parts" habit when i was in my teens...they're all variations on the same theme, only in different degrees of cheese, & these days i'd just as soon write my own if i'm in that sort of mood-- i can get "good" as the best of 'em --tho my written indulgences are for my eyes only. hey hawk, i'd rather watch the movie too...nothing like cutting to the chase, eh? cheers, |

Is UGH an OK answer? I bet some gay guys like them. Nothing wrong with that of course. I think I may have read Wuthering Heights by (one of the Bronte sisters) years ago. Nobody told me it was a romance novel. I suppose it would be considered a proto-romance novel. I guess it could also be called a Gothic-romance novel. Was this the story where some crazy person in a family was hidden away in an attic? And wasn't there some guy by the name of Heathcliff who used to go walking around the moors on dark & bleak days....or am I thinking about something else? Oh yes.....why don't guys like romance novels? I dunno. |
