I am so sick of the music that is out right now... the same old stuff plays 24/7.

All of us have some bands or singers that we listen to that is not mainstream, so how about you share the unknown singers that YOU like with the rest of us? Or even list the singers/bands that aren't around anymore and don't get much radio play...

What are some songs that you like by people who are not mainstream? It can be any type-- rock, country, rap, R&B...etc...

Example: I recommend the band Drain STH. they are great, but I bet most of you haven't even heard of them...

Date: 4/30/2002 9:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 20750    I love " Out Back" & " Modern English"
Date: 4/30/2002 9:49:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Moon Girl-- was Modern English an 80's band? They sound familiar...
Date: 4/30/2002 9:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 20750    They sing " I'll stop the world & melt with you"
Date: 4/30/2002 9:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 20750    yep!! there were!! I love them!
Date: 4/30/2002 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 27028    well you can't help that,i bet millions wished they played their favourite bands but it all boils down to popularity, celebrity status and record sales. a music channel's goal is to acheive and attract as many hits listening to their station, if it starts playing unkown songs it may dent the hit levels, i don't think MTV is doing it for the good of music (jackbutt, celebrity deathmatches and loads of flashy stuff)you can't blame them, my favourite unknown bands are stuf like cold play, radiohead and daft punk, well of course there not as far off as others but at least they have stuck to the plot,i also adore gorillaz and i know others would say aswell
Date: 4/30/2002 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 52155    One of my favorite non-mainsteam bands right now is a garage band called "Superchick" I have seen them in concert twice now, and they are pretty cool. Their cd is called Karoke Superstars. They are kinda pop, kinda rock, kinda techno, kinda a lot of stuff. Pretty neat. -eddo
Date: 4/30/2002 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 19460    for anyone who likes country, i recomend listening to a man named Anthony Smith. He has a cd out but it only has 4 songs. He migt have more cd's out now cause i got this one back in 96 i think? His song "Fly Me Away" is really good! And on top of all that he is a very talented black man... not trying to make a point of that, but its rare for country music... give him a listen!
Date: 4/30/2002 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 49765    No, I haven't heard of Drain. What type exactly are you looking for. Old/new rock, country. (Raintear)
Date: 4/30/2002 9:55:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    raintear-- rock is my favorite, but I'd like for people to list any of thier favorites, no matter what type of music they are...
Date: 4/30/2002 9:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Dr. Dopey-- MTV annoys me. I mean it REALLY bugs me. It takes everything that is wrong with youth today and amplifies it 100%...
Date: 4/30/2002 9:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    Well I guess its kinda mainstream...but I really like to set back and listen to some fleetwood mac...I love that kind of music.
Date: 4/30/2002 9:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 51530    taking back sunday has to be the best band i've heard in years
Date: 4/30/2002 9:57:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Froggy baby-- I'll have to download some of his music...
Date: 4/30/2002 10:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 25390    I hate new music for the most part. There's a Texas band called "Brobdinagian Bards" and they play a mix of renaissance/celtic music. I love that stuff, and they are really funny. Also my cousin has a band in california, the Hellish Hounds. They play a lot of old school rock (very Metallica based). They write everything themselves and they are really good. My favorite is old Aerosmith though. and 80's Jon Bon Jovi.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 48041    I like Carolyn Dawn Johnson but she is almost unheard of here in the UK..!
Date: 4/30/2002 10:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 42792    Ergo and Grandfather Ridiculous are great. You can check out their webbies. They both should have LPs coming out soon.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 34775    OMG!!! Hey Dizzy...wanna experiment? Actually I love alot of these indie bands that get little or know recognition aside from some hardcore fans, but try downloading anything by Sunny Day Real Estate (newest Cd entitled "The Rising Tide" highlights: Rainsong, Snibe, Television) Well heck, anything by Sunny Day is great. If you like real crunchy grunge rock , try downloading anything off of Sebadoh's album "Bakesale" (highlights: "Not Too Amused" Liscense to Confuse" or "Careful" or try downloading the song by them called "Beautiful Friend" off of their album "Harmacy"... This next band sounds odd but if you like the sound of alternative country/hippie rock (like Phish... or reminiscent of the Grateful Dead) Download some music by The Jayhawks (highlights: "Take Me With You When You Go", "Waiting For the Sun", "Blue", "Over My Shoulder", "Crowded in the Wings" or some Scud Mountain Boys (I know-weird name, but don't let it detract from the music highlights: "Witchita Lineman", "Resevoir", "Deliver", "Peter Grave's Anatomy"...I know what you mean about the music on the radio...there is no variety whatsoever...I have TONS more recommendations, so if you ever get sick of what you are listening to, just PM me!!
Date: 4/30/2002 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 34775    Oh, and my sweetie introduced me to a really great band from Oregon called Floater....just thought I would mention them...*sigh* he would be so proud of me...
Date: 4/30/2002 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 42792    Blue Knight...I love Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey Buckingham is an awesome guitarist and the rest of the band rocks too and of course Stevie is the queen!
Date: 4/30/2002 10:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    Stevey......what a voice. Its one of a kind

Date: 4/30/2002 10:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 34775    Oh and hey...if you want some great CHICK southern-y harmonious alternative country grunge rock...you DEFINATELY have to listen to The Damnations TX....I listen to "Unholy Train" when I want to amp myself up to go out with my girlfriends...I will shut-up now...lol
Date: 4/30/2002 10:19:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Anabel-- wow... how do you know about all these "unknowns"? lol
Date: 4/30/2002 10:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 38906    7 channels
Date: 4/30/2002 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Check out "The blasters" they've been around a while kind of a Stray Cats meets Ac-Dc kind of sound.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 34775    Dizzy...lol...I write music reviews and human interest collumns for a free underground paper that reaches out to the younger generation and "Gen X'ers" in the Duluth Minnesota area called "the Ripsaw"...currently I have been delving into the little known psychedelic power trios of the late 1960's...i know tons of indies, so if you want to delve into anything...just ring me...lol
Date: 4/30/2002 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 24732    Here are some bands I listen to that most people don't know who they are- The Dropkick Murphy's, Seven Mary Three, Mudhoney, Candlebox, Cowboy Mouth, The Butthole Surfers, The Presidents of the USA, Coal Chamber (who just came out with a new cd). Or sometimes I listen to old 60's and 70's bands like Strawberry Alarm Clock, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, The Clash, or the Sex Pistols, but only ocasionally because it's not metal enough for me. Here are a few others you might try The Misfits, White Zombie (since you like Rob Zombie), Bikini Kill, Violet Trip...
Date: 4/30/2002 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 24732    Also try people who have split off of their bands like Chris Cornell from Sound Garden and I think Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains has his solo-album.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 17081    Trick Pony is a somewhat new group that is good. Country
Date: 4/30/2002 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 20750    Also Amanda Marshal!!! She's awesome & is from canada!
Date: 4/30/2002 10:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 49037    I love this rock band that plays covers, BUT they also do originals, and have a cd out. They used to be called Tango Palace, but just recently changed the name to sonixedge. They are very talented. I also like the band Off Kilter that plays at Epcot in WDW. They are a celtic rock band. Very unique.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    Dar Williams, James, and lots of latino stuff that you guys wouldn't get :P (Aterciopelados...)
Date: 4/30/2002 10:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 49101    While I can't name any that are not or were not mainstream, MY ULTIMATE, ALL TIME FAVORITE is John Coltrane. He never gets radio time, since it is older music. People my age do not understand my musical taste at all. I LOVE, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Stray Cats, Elvis (Don't Laugh), and *Hangs Head In Shame* at one time, Milli Vanilli.
Date: 4/30/2002 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 39258    wow, okay i'm into punk and love redfield, six year senior, authority zero...
Date: 4/30/2002 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 50864    Wilco is good also Tegan and Sarah upcoming groups Sparklehorse is a good upcomming male singer. As for 80's groups I like Big Country Hugs Mrs.Strider
Date: 4/30/2002 11:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 51869    I am really into the band BoyHitsCar right now. They are so cool. And Earshot is coming up big, I think they will be mainstream soon though. And God Lives Underwater is really cool too. I agree with the dislike of today's music though. It is all the S.O.S. if ya know what I mean. Good post.
Date: 4/30/2002 12:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 51684    Well, I listen to every type of music under the sun...Here are some of my favorites: Cake, Sophie Zelmani, The Refreshments, Peter Salett, Ninedays (not the song they played on the radio), Barenaked Ladies (the old stuff) ~Charisma K.~

Date: 4/30/2002 2:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 49196    there are three bands that are kind of unknown by the masses;Ours, Rasputina and Me First and The Gimmie Gimmies. Ours has a saddened sound, Rasputina has a gothic/angelic sound and Me First is a cover band (punk). I've heard of Drain STH, they're all chicks from Sweden right?
