The Value Of One's Life ~ Hey Larry ~

  Author:  5940  Category:(Human Interest) Created:(5/11/2002 10:23:00 PM)

Awhile back, I wrote a post about a former co-worker that has been diagnosed with cancer. And plans were made at work for those of us who know him, to pay a visit today.

Everything was set, and I was supposed to get off of work at 6:00pm and carpool with some of those I work with, as it's a 45 minute drive to the gathering.

I arrive to work an hour early, on my own time, so I can get a jump on my work and prepare to leave on time. None of the people informed me however, that there was a change in the plant's work schedule. By the time 6;00 rolled around, we were still making bread.

My car pool associates never called me, to let me know they had already left. And it was'nt till I approached one of the supervisors that I found out I would be working till 9:30 pm.

I was'nt too happy about this when I found out. As I had planned all week long to be sure I had the time off needed for this event. I just decided to go outside and take a breather, because for the life of me, I would think that the value of a person's life is worth more than manufacturing a loaf of bread.

A short time later, I placed a phone call to the co-worker, as I did have the phone number of where the gathering was taking place. We chatted for about a half an hour, and I told him that though I was'nt able to come tonight, I would still be more than happy to pay a visit in the near future. We made tentative plans, as he was feeling tired and the medication he was on made him woosy.

I felt bad, and though it's a legitimate excuse, I still wanted to be there. I want to shake his hand and encourage him, and thank him for being a friend to me. But on Monday, I will talk with my supervisor about taking a moment from work so I can personally attend to this promise I wish to keep.

Well, thanks for letting me vent. As I have been working way too much over-time, and I don't think it's too much too ask for a little time off for something as important as this. The Value of One's Life is more important than missing a day from work.

** Update**

Another thing I noticed was that no one really wanted to call this person. I realize that the topic of "Death" is not a pleasant one. But all that is asked from this person is a little bit of your time. And even though I called him, that was just not enough. I know that people are uncomfortable with this, as am I. No one in thier right mind wants to die. But it is nice to know that those who want to spend a little time with would be greatly appreciated.

Date: 5/11/2002 10:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 7341    Hey Larry....sometimes it takes a good post to vent eh? I think that's great that you would want to take out time from your own life to comfort another person. Usually people are so caught up in their own lives that it might be a hassle to offer a few words or spare a few minutes to let another person know that you care. You are awesome Larry...I admire you *hugs*
Date: 5/11/2002 10:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 5940    Corky, thanks for commenting. For awhile there, I was begining to think I should have posted this under "Discussion". At any rate, I just needed to talk it out. We are all human, and things like this will come along, and I am not angry at anyone, I just wish that they would stick to the plan as agreed to.
Date: 5/11/2002 11:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    Larry, you thank us for allowing you to vent, however I see this post as something far from venting. To me, this is an inspirational story to everyone who is putting something off. Who among us has not put something off that is just a bit too uncomfortable. Well, this post is a call to arms so that we may get off our butts and do something that will immeasurably help another person. It could be a simple card or letter, all the way up to days, weeks or months of our time. But what can we measure that against when another persons can be helped. Thank you Larry for always being there to poke us in the side. :-D
Date: 5/11/2002 11:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I'm a nurse and I am glad to read this, if one person realizes the enormous impact they can have on the very sick or dying by just giving a few minutes of time then you will have brought something wonderful to someone, so many are so lonely and time passes so slowly for those who are in hospitals and nursing homes. It takes such a little bit of time to brighten up the day for these people.
Date: 5/11/2002 11:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 5940    Ginger, I thank you and George so very much! I know that this is a topic that makes others uncomforatble. And in all honesty, I am too. But I thank you for your comment, and all I want to do is let that person know how I feel.

Date: 5/12/2002 12:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    this is so sad, so many people try to avoid seeing their friends when this situation arises, the same thing happened to my dad when he got cancer, and the sicker he got with it, the more his friends stayed away, I used to cry and cuddle him its so sad and you go and visit him hun...good post...cheers Zema

Date: 5/12/2002 6:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 40341    You are such a sweet man. I understand how you feel. I am sure your friend appreciates your friendship. It is important that we cherish friends and family because they are here for such a short time. That is why I will be going to see my 84 yr. old mother in june. She is a thousand miles from me but my love for her reaches across the miles. You are a wonderful friend. God Bless You.
