Awhile back, I wrote a post about a former co-worker that has been diagnosed with cancer. And plans were made at work for those of us who know him, to pay a visit today.
Everything was set, and I was supposed to get off of work at 6:00pm and carpool with some of those I work with, as it's a 45 minute drive to the gathering.
I arrive to work an hour early, on my own time, so I can get a jump on my work and prepare to leave on time. None of the people informed me however, that there was a change in the plant's work schedule. By the time 6;00 rolled around, we were still making bread.
My car pool associates never called me, to let me know they had already left. And it was'nt till I approached one of the supervisors that I found out I would be working till 9:30 pm.
I was'nt too happy about this when I found out. As I had planned all week long to be sure I had the time off needed for this event. I just decided to go outside and take a breather, because for the life of me, I would think that the value of a person's life is worth more than manufacturing a loaf of bread.
A short time later, I placed a phone call to the co-worker, as I did have the phone number of where the gathering was taking place. We chatted for about a half an hour, and I told him that though I was'nt able to come tonight, I would still be more than happy to pay a visit in the near future. We made tentative plans, as he was feeling tired and the medication he was on made him woosy.
I felt bad, and though it's a legitimate excuse, I still wanted to be there. I want to shake his hand and encourage him, and thank him for being a friend to me. But on Monday, I will talk with my supervisor about taking a moment from work so I can personally attend to this promise I wish to keep.
Well, thanks for letting me vent. As I have been working way too much over-time, and I don't think it's too much too ask for a little time off for something as important as this. The Value of One's Life is more important than missing a day from work.
** Update**
Another thing I noticed was that no one really wanted to call this person. I realize that the topic of "Death" is not a pleasant one. But all that is asked from this person is a little bit of your time. And even though I called him, that was just not enough. I know that people are uncomfortable with this, as am I. No one in thier right mind wants to die. But it is nice to know that those who want to spend a little time with would be greatly appreciated.
