Father's Day

I awoke this morning to find a large fishhook stuck through the palm of my hand. I was confused, because whenever I stuck myself the barb would come through the back, not the palm. But, I did have a lot to drink last night so I chalked it up to carelessness on my part.

When I went to remove it I was utterly baffled. The hook was connected to a length of chain trailing off into the shadows of the alley. The chain was half slack, but when I tried to pull the hook free the chain tightened and wrenched against my maliable flesh.

This was enough to cause even me considerable pain and I couldn't help letting out a startled grunt. The blood began to pour rapidly from my wound and I lapped at it absent-mindedly while I thought the situation over. Who had control of the far end of the chain? It wasn't as though I minded the pain, I like pain, I just wanted to go and hunt for something to eat.

It was then that I spied a tasty looking rat. In my hunger I completely forgot my predicament, until I reached for the creature. My hand was pulled back with considerable force and with it came my thoughts. If I was to get anything to eat today I'd have to solve this problem first.

"Excuse me, whoever you are, but would you mind letting me go?" I asked the shadows, "You see, I'm dreadfully hungry and would greatly appreciate it if you'd let me get to my errands." I recieved no answer.

"Please sir, let me be! It isn't as though I control your limbs like some lunatic's marionette! What will you of me that you plauge me thus?" A long silence followed with only a slight tightening of the chain to show that there was, indeed a listener.

As I was about to protest once more my situation I heard a barely discernable whisper: "Step closer, Carter. You have much to learn, and I've much to teach, so come hither and we shall speak."

I took a step forward before stopping myself. "What about my breakfast?" I asked indignantly. A small, furry object flew through the air and landed at my feet with a 'plop.' It was the rat! I picked it up with my left hand and began to gnaw furiously at it's delectable meat.

"Are you pleased, Carter?" My capture queried when I'd finished my meal. I nodded vigorously and liked the scraps from my fingers. "Good, good. Now, come here to me." I followed the voice through the shadows and into an entirely new world! It was simply amazing!

Everything was a dull and dead grey, and there were vast cities and gloriously decayed buildings as far as the eye could see! I remember thinking that it was beautifull. Then my eye caught the image of my companion. A squat fellow dressed in rags with the most interesting pale skin, almost as though he had no blood at all.

"Hello, Carter," The thing said, it's long teeth glistening in the sunless gloom. "Hello, my son." Could it be true? This thing, my father? Why, how amazing! How wonderful! If it were a dream I'd wish not to be wakened!

"You are my father? But, what are you? Where are we?" I asked these and a thousand more questions. My father had but one answer: "This way, son. Follow me."

We wound our way down a cyclopean tower and into the heart of a grand temple. Such desolate beauty I'd never previously seen. We made our way to the central room where my father stopped me at the foot of a great alter. "Why are we here?" I asked.

"For the sacrifice."

Sacrifice? Who are we to sacrifice, father? Some innocent child, I hope!"

"The sacrifice shall be..." He trailed off, Finally I prompted him to answer. "...You."

Me? Imagine my horror at this thought! I was not supposed to die! I was supposed to kill, and feed off of what I killed, not be killed myself! I looked for some form of weapon. No one was going to kill me! I found the perfect bludgeon in the form of an ancient cast-iron bar and beat me would-be murderer to a pulp.

When the police found me I was back in the alley. Not to feet from where I slept fitfully was a bloodied iron bar. They claimed to have found the body of an unidentified man a short distance away. That's why they locked me in here, with all these maniacs. I told them that it wasn't human. That it was my father and that it was all right. They didn't believe me.
