It was a cold November night when Todd and Haylee met. One of Haylee's friends ,Michelle, was having her twenty- eighth birthday party. Todd and Haylee were sitting together on the bench swing in Michelle's yard, listing to the music that was playing on the radio sitting in the window of Michelle's house. Haylee leans toward Todd, and in a whispering voice, asks him if he loves her. He looks at her confusingly, replying to her that he's not sure at ths point in their relationship. he also states that he doesn't know her well enough to tell what he feels yet. She asks him why he feels the way he does, when she knows exactly what she feels about him. He gets flustered with her suspicious ways of asking so many interrogating questions.
He then storms off, throwing a plastic cup full of black cherry kool-aid onto the bench where he was sitting, splashing a dark red liquid all over her white outfit. In a ragging mad male fit, him and his friend Drew get in the car that once belonged to Michelle's father, and hystericaly speed off never to return.
Meanwhile Haylee falls to her ashy white knees covered in punch and cries aimlessly, knowing that she will never see her beloved stranger again. She mumbles to Michelle that she is going to leave the party as to not put a damper on everyone else's fun. No one else realized how miserable she was except for Michelle.
She drove all night trying to ponder what her world would be like with and without Todd. All she could do was cry. She stopped on the side of the road to get herself together and to wipe the tears from her eyes that was making it hard for her to see were she was going. She caught a glimpse of what she believed to be Drew's car speeding by her head. She turned her car around and sped off after them. For about an hour she played cat and mouse with that car until she got pulled over for speeding, and not wearing her seat belt the right way.
Being depressed all ready she took her ticket from the officer, and proceeded on her way home.
When she got there she put the key in the door, and scrambled from room to room clapping her hands, turning on every light , and blaring the radio so loud, as if she was trying to tell her elderly and snobby neighbors that she was throwing some kind of wild party. She left everything in the house on and ran out the back door to the small beach behind her one bedroom house. Trying to catch her breathe and sobbing at the same time, she fell to her knees screaming the name of her beloved stranger. The wind carried it off into the distance, not to disturb the silence that surrounded her.
Feeling a warm chill, like the kind you get when you have a fever, come over her body. The salty breeze of the midnight air combed through her hair like her mother's fingers when she was a child. She lifts her heavy head and removes her hair from her bottom lip and strains her bloodshot baby blues off into the horizon of the moonlit waters, as if to see his reflected image coming towards her, open arms to comfort her in her time of need.
She then bows her head and closes her eyes, saying a prayer that her father taught her when she was a small child. Father, Lord, up in heaven teach me now what I've done wrong. Give me now the strength to live as you would have me to, and the knowledge to carry my life on. Amen.
Just to prove that prayers do get answered, she hears a faint crackle of the dewy wet sand. Turning her head she sees a soft silhouette in the glowing moonlight, and softly whispers with her voice trembling into the shadows, "Todd, is that you?" She didn't get any response other that the faint hum of the radio in her bedroom. She lowers her head in disappointing love bound grief. Of course only a fool would believe that it really was him. Suddenly a warm familiar presence appears out of nowhere, filling her body's emptiness with an UNDYING LOVE. She feels a hand softly rest upon her shoulder. She notices a scent on the wind that she smelt earlier in the evening. Picking up her pale life drained face, and setting her eyes on the figure draped over her, She grabs the figure to make sure that she isn't dreaming this time.
Throwing her trembling arms around him she tells him that she knew that he would never leave her and that she loved him so much it would take hell or high water to separate her heart from his memory. He held her in his arms and told her that he would never leave her, and that he realized that he loved her by the feeling that he felt when he left her at the party. The feeling of hurt and the terrible pain that he felt in his heart when they drove for hours trying to decide whether they should return to the party or forget any of that night ever happen to either of them.
He softly took her in his arms and carried her to the patio door leading into the house. He kissed her soft pale lips as he gently placed her on the couch. He looked up from her now glowing face and told her that he was going to go turn off all of the lights and the radio. She told him that everything was plugged into a Clapper, so he clapped his hand so hard that it simultaneously turned off every electrical appliance in the whole house, including the blaring radio in the bed room.
He romantically caresses her body, and slowly tries to undo her punch stained blouse, when she stops him and refuses his charming gestures, and tells him that if he's trying to prove that he loves her. That it is not going to work. It takes more than making love to be in love. He replied saying that he couldn't agree with her any more if he would have said it himself. She rebuttoned her blouse, and asked him to stay, but only under the condition that he sleeps on the sofabed, and makes her breakfast in the morning. He guesses that he can live with that. She shows him were all the sleeping condiments are, kisses him goodnight and retires to bed herself. Closing her bedroom door, taking off her clothes, and slipping a cotton knit night shirt with a picture of Mickey mouse on the front, He startles her, asking her what she wants for breakfast in the morning, she jokingly replies that she wants eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, and pancakes. She tells him to quit being a doof and to go back to bed. He says ok and goes back to the living room.
That night she tossed and turned dreaming that her life was left without him in it and that they never met at all. Screaming his name in her sleep he ran to her bedroom door and flung it open to see what was wrong. She flew up out of bed and grabbed him, sobbing that she was glad it was just a dream and that he was really there to hold her and tell her that everything would be all right. She told him what she had dreamed about. He reassured her that the nightmare she had about them never meeting, or that they would never be together would never in a million years have a ghost of a chance of coming true. He told her that he would never give her any reason for them not to be together. He sat by her side until she fell asleep. Even then he rubbed her hair and watching her sleep. After he felt sure she wouldn't wake up, he went into the living room and went to sleep himself
The next morning she awoke to the smell of a home made breakfast. The aroma of french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, swiss mocha coffee, and her favorite, blueberry pancakes.
On top of all the smells of breakfast, the essence of roses filled the room. The lovely smells that filled her house hooked her by the nose and led her to the kitchen.
She yawned and rubbed her eyes hoping that last night and this morning wasn't just another dream. To her overwhelming surprise her house was filled with a beautiful array of fresh cut long stemmed roses. The dinning room table was set for two people with an appetizing variety of delicious foods, and to top it all off was her beloved holding a single red rose. He greeted her with a "Good Morning Sweetheart" Just as he leaned towards her for a kiss, she turned her head and refused politely, and replied that she had morning breath, and that she felt under dressed for some odd reason. He gently kissed her on the cheek, and let her go get dressed, also of course to brush her teeth.
While she was delayed for a bit, he was setting up for the ultimate surprise. He planned to give her a promise ring to make sure that she knew that he loved her and would never leave her side. She came out of her bedroom in a jade colored jumper, with her hair nicely fixed, and her make up on. His mouth dropped to the floor, and before he could pick it up she gave him the kiss that he was waiting for. Then she told him that she loved him. He seated her at the head of the table so she could enjoy the breakfast he prepared especially in her honor. Little did she know that he ordered it from the restaurant down the street. She kinda wondered why there was no dirty skillets or any mess in the kitchen.
She gently took the cotton napkin off the table, unfolded it, and placed it in her lap. When she looked up to take a sip of her coffee, she noticed a green suede box beside her cup. She asked him what it was and he just told her to open the box. She lifted the lid and to her surprise there was a gold band with a diamond in the middle of two emeralds hugged by 10 white gold prongs. He saw the priceless look on her face and lifted the ring out of the box, slipped it on her left ring finger and kissed her again. They were both speechless during breakfast.
Afterwards, they took a stroll along the beach barefoot, full of such joy, more than either of them had felt in their whole life. She opened her soul to him, and told him exactly how she felt about him. She said that she wasn't sure if she trusted him, but that she would give it a try. On the other hand he still professed his UNDYING LOVE for her without a doubt. She blushed, smiled, and giggled a bit. The time went by so quickly that it was already time for lunch. They went back to the house. Made a picnic lunch and returned to the beach. The two of them were so exhausted after lunch that they fell a sleep in each other arms. When Todd woke up he noticed that the moon rose and it was nine o' clock already. He didn't bother to wake her up and just let her sleep. He noticed that the tide was coming in and quietly picked up her body and carried her into the house. Down the hall through the kitchen and into the bed room. He carefully pulled down the comforter on her bed and layed her down. Silently he removed her shoes and socks, Pulled the blanket up just enough to keep her warm and toasty and softly kissed her forehead and sweetly whispered goodnight.
He went into the living room and knelt beside the couch to pray. He asked the Lord that he watch over his beloved Haylee and keep her safe as she slept peacefully through the night.
As time went on in their lives the two of them decided on a wedding date. After courting for eight months they decided that they could live the rest of their natural born life with one another. Including the subject of children. Understanding that kids would come later, much later.
Then Todd realized that they hadn't met each other's family. They couldn't get married without asking Haylee's parents for her hand in marriage. Of course that meant Family reunion for her, and Nightmare for him. But I guess that since they were going to be married that he would have to live with the idea of two times as many relatives.
That night they packed their luggage , left for Houston, and arrived at the RENT- A-CAR place in less than 6 hours. Both of them completely pooped, they decided to spend the night at a motel. They checked in at a quarter till eight, unpacked, and lounged around the room. Falling asleep, not realizing that they had fallen asleep in their clothes. They awoke the next morning finding that they had slept past check out time.
Scrambling around the room, They finally decide to stay an extra night incase Haylee's parents' run out of room. Leaving a note on the door of the room for the maid to clean up the mess, they left in a hurry, to make it to her parents house before lunch. As soon as they pulled up in the driveway, her parents came out to meet them, along with the family mob. Haylee didn't remember having that many relatives, but she has been away from home for 10 years. but nothing can make up for lost time like the present. Her whole family greeted her with open arms, but they questioned her choice in men. Her father asked who the man was, and she replied " just a friend daddy, He's just a friend." They finally got a chance to get all of the family together to make their announcement. Haylee stood up amongst all of the family, looked at her father, and told him that her male friend had a question for him. Todd then stood up , joined hands with his beloved Haylee, and asked her father for her hand in marriage. Her mother, and all her aunts burst into tears. Her father then stood up, grabbed both of their hands, and without giving him the third degree said that if she loved him enough to bring him all the way from New Jersey to Texas, that he would be honored to give his youngest daughter away. There was no stopping Haylee and Todd's love for each other. No matter where they were or what they were doing they were always together. So as time went on preparation for the perfect wedding ceremony wasn't an easy task.
They spent hour after hour on the phone trying to find the perfect caterers for the reception. Boutique after boutique trying to find the perfect dress. And florist after florist trying to find the perfect color roses and flowers for the joyous occasion. By the time everything was ready 12 weeks had gone by. I guess you could say time flies when you're a fool in love. It seemed only yesterday that they met each other at Michelle's party. Its been almost a full year. And who would have thought that they would get married. especially after the punch incident. But now that they have decided to get married, they haven't found out that the simplicity of love would soon become life in the real world.
The night before the wedding you can imagine what crazy things they did on the last night of their life to be single. Michelle took Haylee and a couple of her sisters to a strip club not too far away from where Todd and his friends were at. I guess they didn't care that each other was going to a strip club it was the idea that they might leave with one of the entertainers. I guess she really didn't' trust him after all. Drinking and driving was not on their agenda anyway, just fun fun fun...Lets just say that, that night was a complete and total disaster.
The next morning she awoke with his brother in her bed, although she couldn't how on earth she got there. She figured that nothing happened. Only because his brother was only 10. On the other hand she couldn't remember a thing about last night due to the terrible bump on the back of her head. She gently picked up her head to look at the clock, and realized that she only had 15 minutes to get ready for her wedding. She threw her self out of the bed rushed into to the shower, turning on the cold water instead of the hot water, quickly washing her hair and shaving at the same time. Human pretzel I must say. Any ways, jumping out of the shower and brushing her teeth, when Todd walks in on her, both of them screaming at the top of their lungs for the other to get out of the bathroom and wondering what the other was doing taking a shower with less then ten minutes to go. He told her that it would be ok if they were both late together. As long as they called ahead of time so that every one would know that they would be a little late to the wedding. They went and got ready to go to their wedding that was supposed to be perfect and left just being about six or seven minutes late.
when they arrived at the church everyone was already seated and ready to go. Haylee was joined by her sisters in the foyer. Her father came into the foyer and asked Haylee to take off her shoe. She was really puzzled by his gesture until she saw him putting a penny in it. He gave her shoe back and kissed her on the head like he use to do when she was a child. They then interlocked arms as the wedding march started. first the bridesmaids went down the isle. then the flower girl ,and ring bearer. da dum dadum. her and her father walk slowly together down to where Todd and the grooms men were. When suddenly she screams and faints. The family quickly responded. They called 911 and the paramedics diagnosed her as having stage fright. when she came to...she told Todd that she wasn't ready to marry him yet. The look in his eyes at that moment were of pain...as if she had stabbed him in the heart, and then the look was frightening as if he wanted to stab her right back.
A few months later to profess his love for her, he rented a small crop duster plane to write her a note in the sky. He told her to meet him on the beach because he had a surprise for her. He got in the plane and took off. Slowly the message came to life it read..."HAYLEE, I LOVF" Before he could finish the message the plane engines failed and the plane crashed killing him instantly. Screaming at the top of her lungs "TODD, I LOVE YOU!!!" Over and over she screamed and cried until the end of the funeral. After his death she visited the cemetery twice a week to profess her UNDYING LOVE for him. Her parents thought that she was going crazy and that she needed help from a psychiatrist. They committed her into a hospital for disturbed women. The shrink told her that she wasn't crazy that she was just grieving for her beloved Todd. The shrink called her parents what his diagnosis was that she was hurting for her fiancee's death. For the next week she tried to forget about him a little at a time. Going out every night, she finally met this guy that helped her through her troubled past, he went with her to Todd's grave one night to try to get her over him. She felt the same hand on her shoulder that she felt the night on the beach when Todd returned to tell her that his UNDYING LOVE for her. She quickly turned around to catch a transparent silhouette of Todd in her new friends face. she fainted in his arms. He carried her to the car to try and revive her.
The next day, her friend, Eric, and her decided to go to the grave again. When they arrived at the cemetery she notices that the date that he died was no longer there. She tells him immediately that she wants to leave. She was trembeling from head to toe. In the car he tells her that if she can't get rid of this obsession with Todd that he is going to leave her. He dropped her off at her house and she tells him that she isn't obsessed with him that she was just trying to say goodbye. Then she gives him an unexpected goodnight kiss.
The next day she opens the paper to read the funnies and sees the name ERIC F. TIBBDEAX and then her phone rings. She answers it, and on the other end was the NJPD asking her that they need her to identify a body that they talked to the people were he worked and they told them that he was seeing someone named Haylee Medcalf. She asked if it was Eric and the police officer didn't tell her, he just told her that they needed her right away. She quickly drove to the morgue to identify the body. The undertaker unzipped the body bag to reveal his entire body. She gagged at the sight of the inscription on his chest. It had the initials T.M.M and she thought for a minute and then her thoughts spoke out loud "TODD, HOW COULD YOU DO SUCH A THING, I LOVED HIM!!!" Then she realized it couldn't`t be Todd that he was dead.
She quickly returned home to find that on her calender it was November 14th. Todd and Haylee's 7th anniversary. She went to the bathroom to wash her face and saw his reflection as if he was sanding behind her holding a knife. When she turned around she screamed "TODD!!" He stabbed her in the chest. And he told her, "Haylee, I Thought you loved me!" And with her last breath she whispered:I DO LOVE YOU, TODD, I'VE ALWAYS LOVED YOU!!!" The last thing she heard from him was "IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU NO ONE CAN!!!!!!"
From that day on it has been said that their spirits roam the beach behind her house professing her UNDYING LOVE for each other.
