Daniel by: Tracy Lynn Richardson
"SOMEONE HELP ME, MY LITTLE BROTHER IS DROWNING!!!!!!" Those seven words will haunt me for the rest of my life. My little brother Daniel died on May 6, 1985. He drowned, and it's all my fault.
See, it all started when my little brother wanted to go to the swimming hole. I didn't want to take him, if someone saw him with me, I would be so embarrassed. Like usual my mother took his side and made me take him with me. When we finally got there, my feet hurt from walking two miles, and all my brother could think about was getting into the water.
Thirty minutes later, I saw the boy of my dreams, his name was Brian Faulkner. I had to go talk to him no matter what. I yelled at Daniel to stay away from the deep part of the water and stay on this side if the pool.I then started to walk toward the heavenly figure which was Brian.
"But what about Daniel?" you ask. Well since I was only going a few feet away I thought that he would be fine, Besides there were a lot of people there, but I was sadly mistaken.
The minute that I turned my back was the minute that would change my whole life. I heard this blood curdling scream. " Isn't that your little brother?," Brian asked. When I turned around to see if he was still playing with the neighbor kids he wasn't there.
I ran around screaming. Were is he when I saw Brian's face turn ghost white as he pointed to the pool. It was Daniel, face down, floating on top of the water. I did every thing, I ran into the water to get him out.
But when I got him to the shore, he was blue as the sky and as limp as a rag doll. Brian's father was the lifeguard and did CPR on Daniel. Then he looked at me, and through his tears replied " There is nothing I can do." At that very moment I felt like I was going to die too.
I knelt down on my knees and pleaded to god for him to take me in Daniel's place. But Life isn't fair and my life changed the minute that Brian's father looked at me in tears.
I kept begging my mother to forgive me, "Mother, I did everything that I could." "Your best is never enough, and this time you are not going g to be forgiven no matter what you say or do. You killed your little brother and my only child!"
"WHAT?" I questioned. "Yes, you're not my real daughter, in fact you're not even related. you are adopted. Yes, that is right, i felt sorry for your real mother because she had so many problems before she died. Your mothers last wish was for me to take care of you for her. And here for all these years, I feed you, and I nurtured you as a mother, and this is how you repay me, you kill my only son. How dare you say you are sorry." She said in a very angry voice, and then she slapped me so hard that it busted my two front permanent teeth out.
I didn't say anything else to my mother or what ever she is to me. I ran out the front door all the way to the cemetery. I knelt by the grave of my little bother and prayed to god for him to make a way for e to live without any of my relatives.
All of the sudden every thing around me became beautiful and I saw a small figure in the distance that looked exactly like Daniel. The figure came closer to me, and it was Daniel. For a minute, I thought that I was going crazy.
"I'm glad that you finally made it, I have been waiting for you." The figure, or I mean Daniel said to me in a peaceful voice.
"Are you Daniel?" I asked him. not for sure that I wanted to know the answer.
"Yes..,and No!" he said
"What do you mean yes and no?" I asked him not for sure that I would understand him anyway.
"I am Daniel, But only his spirit. I know that it wasn't your fault that I drowned, and I know that you told me to stay out of the deep water. I should have listened to you. I want to repay you for all the good things that you have done for me in the past and give you something to take with you in the future."
"What is that?" I Asked still kind of puzzled at what was seeing. At that moment I found my self back at my house with my so called mother. She greeted me as if nothing had happened between us at all.
"This is my gift to you. As a brother I give you a peaceful life without all of the bitterness that she gave you before. Also I give you a gift, a gift that not only you will like but it will make everybody happy.
"And what is this one going to be?"
"I give you or I mean all of you, a new baby. Your mother will find out that she is pregnant today. True, that a new baby will never take the place of me in the family's heart, but it is the least i can do since my death was my fault."
" Will I ever see you again?" I Asked Daniel.
" Every time you look into the baby's eyes, you will see my spirit. I ill always be here for you, and I am always listening. If you ever need a thing all you have to do is ask."
That is the last time that i saw Daniel, But he was right. Every time I look in the baby's eyes I see his spirit.
