Alone in the old high school Anthony Flynn nervously waited for Jessie to come. She said she'd be there at eight. It was going on quarter of nine. He furtively threw the beam of his flashlight around the small supply room where they'd agreed to meet. In another fifteen minutes, he decided, he'd just give up and go home.
"Tony!" The voice startled him so much he almost took off running. As it was, though, he only dropped his flashlight. "Jeeze! You're jumpy, man! Lighten up!" Jessie. The girl of his dreams and his best friend since third grade. She was always so brave and so insatiably curious, even when it got her in trouble. It had been her idea to come out here in the first place.
"Christ, Jess! You tryin ta give me a friggin heart attack??" Jess just laughed as he stooped to retrieve his flashlight. Tony loved to hear her laugh. "And, you're almost an hour late! You know that? I was just about to take off when you showed. So, we doin this or what?"
"Yeah, we doin' it. Just let me get ready, eh?" She dropped her backpack to the dusty floor and started rumeging through it. She removed a camera, a length of rope, and a flashlight of her own. She hesitated a moment, as if mulling something over in her mind, before taking a small lock pick and sliding the bag into the far corner. "All right, laddie-buck, let's go."
"So, um... why're we here, again?" Tony asked as they made their way down the long and forboding hallway. He didn't like the way his light cast ominous shadows in the rooms around them. He almost had to stiffle a yelp when the beam danced over a lab skeleton. "I mean, what's the plan, ya know?"
Jessie just rolled her eyes and kept on walking. Just when Tony thought she wasn't going to answer, she did. "Because, Toneroonytunes, I just don't think I can bear to go all summer without finding out what's in that cellar. Probably just a boiler room and stuff; but that doesn't explain why it smells so God-awful around there. I just want to check it out, that's all."
"So... we're giving up a perfectly good saturday afternoon to break into the school, risking felony charges mind you, just to see why the south wing smells bad?" Jess stopped for a moment to ponder Tony's remark.
"...Yeah, that's about the gist of it."
"Great..." Tony said, more to himself than to anyone else. He hurried to catch up with Jess at the end of the hall.
How it changed my life:Sorry to do this to you, laddie-bucks and lady-bucks, but I'm going to have to split this one in two. I just think it's the best idea for the story right now, so... look for part two soon... I guess...
