A Question about Epilepsy....Does this make sense?

As some of you may remember, My boyfriend had a seizure about a month ago. Well, he went to the doctor yesterday to have his blood levels checked. The doctor told him that he had the seizure because he drinks soft drinks. HUH!!!

Brief History: My boyfriend has had epilepsy since he was 8 years old. He is now 26. He has them like clock work, every 3 or 4 years. He is taking Phenobarbatal and Dilanten.

The Doctor said that he sould not have any sugar. That the sugar in the soft drinks made him have his seizure. I have asked a nurse and a medical student about this. Neither of them had ever heard of that.

I want to know if anybody else has ever heard of this. It really doesn't make any sense. (BTW, no he isn't diabetic)

Date: 6/26/2002 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 31765    sound smore like a diabetic episode hon, with the sugar being involved. sugar does cause chemical changes....not sure on this one....best of luck with you both..
Date: 6/26/2002 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 55939    Actually what your doctor told you was correct;

They are putting Aspartine in Soda that can cause people to have seizures. Especially if they are chronic drinkers. It builds up in the body.

Take care and I wish you and your boyfriend all the luck in the world. God Speed and Blessing.

Date: 6/26/2002 9:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    NightAnkh, the doctor didn't mention that. He was talking only about sugar. He wants my boyfriend to cut all sugar out. Not just soft drinks. He said the sugar is what caused it. But I will let my boyfriend know about the Aspartine. Wait, do you mean Aspartame? Isn't that a artifitial sweetener? I thought that was only in diet drinks? TarheelGirl
