It began innocently enough. With a bit of flirting on both sides. She spoke a little english, and I a little spanish.
Normally I tend to shy away from workplace relationships. I don't mind an occasional get together with co-workers, wether it be a picnic or a day at the bowling alley. But I have found in the past, that anything beyond that tends to cause problems. And before you know it, everyone at work knows your personal business.
So at first, I saw nothing harmful in just being friendly. Not to mention how good it felt to have a member of the opposite sex take an interest in you.
I never paid much attention really, untill I was approached by another co-worker of hers. She asked me if I was single. I answered yes, and before I knew it, she was trying to set me up with her, the one who's face was a mixture of latin and native american features. I shall refer to her as "M".
Not that I was'nt flattered mind you. It's just that earlier that day, when I arrived to work, I noticed that "M"s car had two child seats in the back. I have no idea if that car is really hers, or borrowed by friend or family.
And I have also noticed that there is a tan line on the ring finger. Just a wild guess on my part. I hesitated to pursue the matter any further. As I was'nt sure of the situation. The last thing I want to do is find myself between her and an angry husband, if that be the case.
I made an excuse, and passed it off hoping that I did'nt offend her. (telling the co-worker to translate to "M") She seemed nice, and is attractive. But I prefer to wait and see what else can or will develop, before jumping in.
As the months go by, she still winks at me. And I smile.
It was'nt until last week I discovered that she no longer works here. Where did she go? What has become of her? I kind of asked a few questions but got no straight answers.
I can only speculate from this point on. For I have not a clue as to what occurred. My guess is that her INS status had expired, and she had to return home. For this sort of thing has happened in the past. One day a worker has to make plans to go home because someone in the family is sick, or they are needed for other reasons. Yet some of them return a month or so later, trying to regain the job they previously had. And most of them get employed elsewhere.
It's a cycle of sorts, I have noticed. But I do admire the one's who work very hard. And I realize that they are trying to make thier way in life, and take care of thier families as well. I cannot fault them for that. For I have no idea what it's like to be in thier shoes.
I hope "M" is doing well. I miss seeing her face, and the wink she always gave in my direction.
