I think you should spend some time in the sun but it should be minimal. I went to a tanning bed for a month, and I did like to get dark since I tan really easily but...if you keep at it...when you're 40 your skin will look 80. I decided that I'd rather be a little lighter and have prettier skin. However, when I went camping for a week...I got pretty tanned. Sorry I got off on a tangent there lol. i don't think tanning beds are directly harmful but eventually will cause you problems. Love, |

Tanning beds can penetrate deep into the skin, break down collagen and causes wrinkles. UVA rays may also damage your immune system and lead to skin cancer. So their bad! =P |

Well, I think they can be bad, however I just got back from one a few hours ago. I have heard that as long as you only go on a month's membership per year and aren't one of those people who go 24/7, 365 days per year, that it is not bad. There are ways to tan in the beds responsibly. |

LOL I'm with Rika...Being out in the Real Sun is bad for you too but that doesn't stop people so I won't stop tanning either..It seems like nothing in this world is good for you anymore! Might as well enjoy it while we can.. |

yes, over time, it's bad for your skin, but it cooks your kidneys as well. I stopped after giving that a bit of thought. Tans are overrated...if you love your skin, you will protect it ~SpaceCase |

I have layed in the tanning bed for a couple of years. Some people could lay their whole life and nothing happen, but someone else could lay a few times and something bad happen. You just never know. |

A tanning bed is like a human croc pot, it boils your innards, it will give ya melinoma but if you like skin cancer go for it -x0mb13 |

The whole story about the "girl dying at prom" is because she went tanning MORE than ONCE in a 24 hour period-and that much exposure really does fry you and cause you to literally "cook." This is why you will notice most places make you sign waivers stating you haven't been tanning in at least 24 hours. Also, now the actual sun outside is much much more harmful than tanning beds, and lead to skin cancer more often than the beds. With beds, if you use proper precautions, such as the glasses (which I don't...don't like raccoon eyes!), tanning lotions which will accellerate the pigments and prevent burning, at the same time moisturizing and preventing cell breakdown, you should be fine, especially if you don't go more than twice a month. |

well i dont know if they are good are bad but i have been going for a year, i had these bad skin break outs for years, i spent about sixty dollars a month on creams and other medications, under the advice of a notible skin dr, i went three times a week for a year now, guess what my problem was solved my skin feels healtier than ever before. but take warning over exposure will cause skin cancer and wrinkles. its like any other thing you do , you must not abuse it , i love it.... |

If you don't go often I think it is safe...but the people who go several times a week are in trouble! lol |

Okay, I have heard this a lot, but just pulled this out of the Cosmo I was reading today. "A recent study published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that salon tanners were up to two and a half times more likely to get skin cancer than people who had never tried indoor tanning techniques. Study researcher Steven K. Spencer, M.D., professor of medicine and surgery at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, explains that the devices deliver concentrated doses of cancer-causing ultravioliet radiation. And the younger you start salon tanning, the greater the danger: For each decade earlier that you do it, your skin-cancer risk climbs by 10 to 20 percent." It is on page 82 of the July issue of Cosmopolitan if you want to check it out. |
