"real people" pleeeze. No, they do NOT need to be applauding ANYONE for being overweight. BUT I think its ridiculous that most women in hollywood feel the need to be toothpicks. Look at Courtney Cox and Calista Flockheart-- good ogod they look horrible. Courtney Cox used to look really good but now she looks sickly she has lost so much weight ![]() |

I think the idea is that in society today skinny is accepted and if you are over weight you are made to feel like you are less of a person (pardon the pun). Every magazine you look in almost, or show you see skinny=beauty fat=ugly I've struggled with a weight problem all my life. I can rarely go to the store without being made fun of. The world is not fat people friendly. You just would'nt beleive how much discrimination there is against over weght people. So it's nice to see someone overweight make it when it's rare especially in women. And I think thats more of whats being applauded. I don't think the idea is to encourage weight gain, more to encourage acceptence for and of those who are over weight. ![]() |

No, I don't think there's anything wrong with applauding an actress who made it in Hollywood even though she's heavy. It's an accomplishment that against the odds and discriminations of Hollywood, she made her dream reality. I think what you might be saying is that obesity is an eating disorder too so why applaud her for it. I think the difference is that she is not going along with everyone else's expectations for being thin and therefore she does deserve a pat on the back. ![]() |

Too many people have the mind set that if you're not thin, you have no feelings, or do not "count". I am over weight and have experienced much abuse and descrimination because of it. Wow Dizzy...you are being harsh tonight. Sure some people are overweight because they are lazy just as some skinny people are too darn skinny perhaps because they are speeding. Who knows??? I don't think anyone of any size should be ridiculed based solely on their body image. How they got to be that way is a different story but still of private means however, I admit that I am critical sometimes. I am a little overweight. I hate it, it bothers me, but not enough to really do anything about it so it is my problem. I definitely don't agree with applauding someone for being overweight which is what this debate asks. My reason: that is encouraging a sickness or bad behaviour. It is like saying....go ahead, eat like a glutton, clog your arteries and die a horrible death. Not good. Why not just applaud someone based on their true merit of whatever it is that they are doing i.e. acting, singing, painting, walking dogs, etc...? ![]() |

I think some people are genetically inclined to be of higher weight and some of lower. I for one, can only eat one meal per day and must exercise everyday to remain of a "normal size." I am still 10-15lbs heavier then anyone guesses me to be. I've always been muscular and people mistake it for "thickness." I know people who have metabolisms so out of control that they have to take weight-gainer pills and shakes to keep weight on. Everyone should be excepting of everyone's weight and only should worry about their own weight. People who have eating disorders don't always choose to have them. Scientists are finding out that eating disorders are genetically linked. Society needs to stop victimizing the victim... the victim being everyone who has some form of weight problem or eating disorder. Good post ;o) ![]() |

I, for one, would not encourage anyone to be too thin or overweight or even "perfect" (whatever the heck that is). This is directed at those who think that all overweight people have health problems...Being skinny by being bulemic or anorexic can cause just as any if not more health problems as being overweight...heart problems, teeth decay, vital organs shutting down, loss of menstrual cycles and eventually death come from eating disorders. I think as a society we care too much about the weight of others. And look for the most part this debate is filled with girls (for the recored I'm a girl too) I guess it's a gender issue. Also I never hear of guy models being critisized for their weight, but I think some probably are anoerexic. But really why does anyone care if models are starving themselves? Why would anyone care if someone is being gluttonous, how does it effect you? Unless they are your family member or friend. Just like smoking, we should care less about the health issues of people we don't know. Sure there are health issues and it's not good to be either way, but we should let doctors worry about it instead of praising or critisizing people in Hollywood or people in real life either. I always hear people saying famous people need to gain/loose weight because they are "role models" But I can't think of a time I ever looked up to anyone in Hollywood and tried to be like them. ![]() |

I have one more thing to add then I am off for the night when I got pregnant with my daughter I weighed about 92 pounds I am 5 ft 5 and I got teh same reactions DizzyMe is talking about but after I had my daughter and gaining 100 pounds while pregnant with her I got to see teh other side of teh spectrun..it hurts to be laughed at and told you are fat and ugly...I lost most of teh weight then I got pregnant with my son and gained another 40 pounds and finally 3 years later I had my last child and gained 28 punds with him although he was premature 6 weeks so I am sure I would have gained more. Anyhow that adds up to 168 pounds which would mean I would weigh 260 pounds right now had I not lost any of the weight...that would not change who I am inside just what I look like on the outside. I have lost a good majority of the weight although I am still not at my "ideal" weight...I now weigh 150 pounds and I am still teh same person as I would be at 75, 120, or even 300 pounds my body would just be a different size...so my point is that until a person fully understands what another's life is like there is no point in judging them and as I said before why not judge on character and not on looks.~~luv_4_2pac~~ ![]() |

Both can be a problem, but ultimately it's the attitude of the person that matters. We need fat actors as well as thin ones otherwise we'd be looking at cardboard cutouts. Coolade ![]() |

I dont know that they are applauding her for being overweight, maybe for just being able to make it in a business clearly dominated by thin and beautiful people. This society is way too obsessed with weight and I for one am sick of it. I dont want it to effect how I feel about myself and it does. ![]() |

The doctors thought that Calista Flockheart had a strange lump but it turned out she just took an aspirine. I think that it's a good idea for most people to try to maintain their weight at a "healthy level". I also realize that it is not always so easy to do. wb ![]() |

I think she represents a real person too and there is not many in hollywood like her at all. Everyone knows by applauding her that people are not going to go out and eat and eat and eat. So I guess that is why they do it. ![]() |

i think it's bad to applaud someone for being overweight, but i think it is good to admire them for being comfortable with herself and not worrying about what people think of her. i admire her ability to get as far as she has in this shallow, image-obsessed society of ours, but she should still be concerned about her weight bc of health problems. ![]() |
