Genesis 11:1-9 (KJV) 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 11:5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. _______________________________________________________________________________ When God decided that the people were working together so well, and building cities so quickly, He decided to scatter them all over the earth, into different nations and civilizations. Into what I could only imagine as sudden confusion..YIKES!! So here's my theory...along with the language barriers, skin tone differences were also made... Surely, these people had to adjust to their climates, and their skin tones changed from the once unified tone, to skin-tones that would serve their health. In cooler climates, where the sun wasn't as harsh, lighter skin "colored" the people. And in hotter climates, where the sun offered no solace, darker skin "colored" the people of those regions. Have you ever noticed that fairer skinned individuals seem to burn very easy, or that darker skinned individuals do not take well to the shocking coolness of a swimming pool (for instance). Look at the different countries of the world...in Mexico, for instance, the natives have dark tan skin...the climate is hot and the terrain, bare.... In Ireland, you have very fair-skinned people...They are in a higher, cooler climate, and the sun is often blocked by a light blanket of fog, or clouds. In Africa, a country that is mostly desert, originated the darkest complexions...With little shade, the dark skin absorbed the heat and the sun didn't burn the skin. These are just formed thoughts...I grew up around a few racists and grew to hate their stories of how people came to be the color they were...My best friend in Kindergarten and still to this day is black, and I never understood the reasoning behind racism. I guess formulating this theory, I was seeking to find a better answer than...they fell in a mud puddle...or other hog-wash.
