In the beginning, the Mother was lonely. So she created the forest children. The forest children were humanoid in form, and had the use of many humanoid faculties. They could think, see, smell, hear, taste, feel, touch, and also reason. But they were not human in the fact that they were made of plant matter.
The Mother had already created her Green Men and Women who would be protectors and creators of her forests and woods. But these were limited to the boundaries of their land, and could not leave, for their life would then be forfeit. And so, out of desperation and hope, the Mother created the forest children. These she also gave the gift of magic, so they could live outside of the woods and forests if the need arose.
Over the years since their birth, the forest children have changed slightly. Their original form is still that of a humanoid green-colored creature, but due to the uniqueness of their magic, they are also shape shifters. No other entities have this magic except for fairies and dragons, and they are very unlikely to use it, especially around humans. Fairies and dragons both prefer privacy and peace.
The funny thing is, when the Mother made the forest children, she made them humanoid, which also gave them the emotion or capability for curiosity. Curiosity has never let humanity down, and it did not let the forest children down either. Unlike dragons and fairies, the forest children wanted to see what was out there, wanted to explore, and find out what the earth was like in all it's glory.
And so it began.
The forest children were careful, and quiet, and tried not to draw attention to themselves, and so the ability to shape-shift into other forms became instinctively inbred into their magic. The first shape was to take that of living plants. They could turn into large bushes, trees, or even vines and take nutrients from the earth. Sometimes it was easier than trying to hunt for food, or buying it.
The next shape was that of a perfect human. They transformed from humanoid nature-colored to the skin tones, eyes, and hair of a human. Whether tan, gold, pale, or dark skinned, whether black, brown, blonde, or red hair, and whether green, gold, blue, brown, or hazel eyes, they could take the form of any type of human.
Eventually they could take any shape. Their magick evolved and became more a part of them. Because of the nature of magic, their shape-shifting let them take any form, whether bird, dragon, cow, fish, kangaroo, or anything else that takes in energy to live.
Because of this power, and the beginning essence of their magic, the forest children learned they could alter the essence and reality of the energy around them. They could heal humans and plants, they could create balls of energy and light, they could even change a rock into a plant.
Their powers are very strong, but because of their nature, most forest children do not use their magick in front of others, except for themselves and the other natural creatures around them. And, thankfully, about ninety-nine percent of them use their powers for good and for the betterment of the earth. So, yes, that leaves about one percent for the bad side, but doesn't every society and order have their bad apples??
And so our original story begins with a young female forest child named Emeraldine. She was so named, because no matter what form she took, her eyes were always a sparkling green that showed the light of the Mother.
