Im going to tell you all a freaky story i heard. Ive known about the House of mystery since i was,like,5 or 6,but i didnt know the story BEHIND the house til,like,7th grade, and it was pretty weird...

Apparently,a very rich woman,i think her name was Sarah Winchester, inherited a lot of money, and one day at a carnival or something,a gypsy told her that she needed to build a house,or her life would be forfeit, and fast.As long as the hammers never stopped beating, neither would her heart. She honestly believed this, and so came to be the Winchester house of Mystery. It ws actually a very luxurious place, since the victorian style home even had indoor plumbing, and at the time, this house was actually very modern! she died when she was about 80 yrs old or so.She really got gypped... The construction of the building had gone on til her dying day.Since then, the house has tours til 5 pm or so,and trust me,they NEED the guides! There are halls that lead on forever, practically, and stairs that go nowhere ,literally! Hope you find this interesting!

Date: 8/6/2002 10:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 59940    ive more to add...
Sarah was a very small person,i guess, because there are both tall doors and short doors!
She was very superstitious, and with a reason!
Did i ever tell you why she believed the fortuneteller?
She inherited that fortune from her family company, who made the Winchester Rifles, and she thought that she had been cursed by those who had died because of a Winchester Rifle.
Just a sort of update!

Construction of the house hadd not ended til her dying day, therefore it never really WAS finished!
the stairs that lead to nowhere?
end pretty much beneath the roof.
you cant really go any further...

Date: 8/19/2002 12:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 49742    I keep thinking about visiting it since I live here in Calif. I heard she willed the house to the city to give tours, to make money to give to charities. She thought this would make up for the guilt of her ancestor that invented the winchester rifle, that killed so many people. She felt guilty over it, and thought this would help make up for it.
