Feeling defeated and hopeless I fell to my knees and began to cry. All my dreams and hope had began to slip from my sight and nothing seemed right. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and realized I wasn't alone. I looked up with tears falling down my cheeks and seen a gentle soft face leaning toward me. He sat down next to me and held me in his arms whispering that everything will be ok. I often wonder if he knew that or just felt as alone as I.
We sat there for a long time, just the two of us together until the sun was about to set. He lifted me up from the ground and looked in my eyes. He smiled and pointed toward the sky where the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen was right before us. He looked back at me and I layed my head on his shoulder, I felt so whole, so complete. We stayed there until the stars came out and the sky grew dark. He told me to come inside and eat dinner until we could figure out what to do. I was so taken back by his kindness I questioned him a bit. I told him I wasn't hungry and I better be on my way, yet he insisted I stay just a little longer. We argued a little bit about where I would go and he finally asked if he could drive me to the nearest bus station. He said it was the least he could do for me, so I agreed.
We walked through the dirt parking lot around back to where his car was parked. He searched for his key as I grabbed a jacket from my backpack. He opened the door and climbed in unlocking my side of the car. I felt weary at first getting into his car unaware of who he was or why he had showed such kindness to me, but I figured it was either go with him or sleep outside. I climbed in and shut the door behind me.
He pulled out and soon we were on the road. It had grown quite dark and the radio was on low. I had slumped down in my seat with my jacket over my chest and shoulders. He told me to rest and we'd be there soon. I smiled and closed my eyes. Throughout the night I woke up here and there not aware of the time or where I was. We came to a stop and I seen a red light flashing. We were at an intersection so I straightened up and began to wake up slowly. He looked drained and tired but kept a smile.
It was 5 am when we finally reached the bus station. I thanked him and began to get out of the car, a little sadden by the thought of being alone again. He grabbed my hand one last time and smiled up at me, he said I was welcomed to stay with him. I looked over at the lonely bench and shuttered at it's sight. I told him I was on my way to California and it was for reasons he wouldn't understand. He looked down and said he understood. As I gathered my things a song came over the radio. It sounded so familiar but I couldn't make out the muffled words so I opened the car door. To my amazment it was the song that inspired this entire trip, it was my song. I smiled and began to hum to it not realizing I was doing so. He suddenly looked up at me again with awe on his face. I got quiet very quickly and grabbed my stuff and shut the door saying thank you as fast as I could.
I walked down the sidewalk into the bus station. I seen the awful bench I had seen from the window and put my bag down, walking toward the bathroom. As I came back from the bathroom I noticed my bag was missing. Alarmed I ran up to the ticket booth and asked if he had seen someone take my bag. He smiled and pointed over toward the door. There stood the young man who had driven me here. He walked over and hugged me tight. He sat down on the bench next to me, insisting I tell him my story, my reasons for being out here alone. My face grew bright and flushed and feelings I had never felt before rushed over me. For the first time in my life, someone cared enough to be there for me.
