Norman....by TC

A number of years ago I was enrolled in a Veteran's program. It was kind of a thing to keep vets out of trouble, occupy their time, or help them with mental or substance issues.

One man in this program was Norman G. From the start it was obvious that he was a very depressed individual. He frequently spoke of being falsely blamed for something or other. He always had a lost, mopey, look... more so than any of the other men with depression problems.

One day (I remember it was a pretty day in the month of october) I happened to pass Norm as he was walking up to the parking lot, from the building where the program was held. I said "hi"...and I think he may have said "hi" back...or at least nodded and looked at me with his usual woe begone expression.

An hour or two later I learned that Norman was in the emergency room....dead from a self inflicted gunshot. I may well have been the last person to speak to him before he went to his car and shot himself.

Norman G.

Date: 8/12/2002 6:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 46005    I have always said that life may be easier than death so it seems... but it takes a strong individual to pull that trigger - and a whole lot more problems than I could ever understand- so I can not judge someone who takes thier lives, nor even try to understand, all I can say is im sorry you had to be involved.

Date: 8/12/2002 2:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Even as much depression as I've experienced, I can't understand how a person could actually squeeze that tigger, put the noose around their throat, or take that leap. Either it's because their suffering has exeeded anything I have experienced...or it's a just maybe a different attitude. Today, I was back to the same hospital where Norman, & Vincent ended their lives all that time ago. Today my doc informs me that besides my borderline liver problems....I might be diabetic. I ain't the suicidal kind....even if some of my past chemical & alcohol misadventures might have made it seem other wise.
