During this summer I read a "On Writing", by Stephen King. The book caught my interest because I enjoy writing and I'm also a Journalism major in college at this time. I noticed that there is a lot of talented writers on this web site and I thought you might be interested in reading this book.
"On Writing" is Stephen Kings attempt to make a guide to help new and old writers write better and I must say that he does a great job of it. The book consists of three sections the first being a brief description of Kings childhood to his adult years that helped shape the writer that he has become. The middle section of the book is his guide to how to start and improve your writing. King describes many of the things that we have learned in school but at the same time he throws those things out the window and describes what he feels is the best way to begin a career as a writer and also to improve your writing if your seeking to improve your skills from adverbs, to plotting stories, vocabulary, and description.
In the third section of the book King describes how the way we live our lives and the events that shape the course of lives can help shape the way a new and old writers write like that of the tragic traffic accident he was in a couple of years ago and his recovery from that accident helped him renew his love of writing because it helped him to lose focus of the physical pain he was in after the accident while he was recovering and helped him finish this book.
Stephen Kings "On Writing" is a unique and enjoyable book for young and old writers to read if you wish to build or improve your skills in this craft. I am not asking you not to listen to the advice I'm sure most English teachers have given you but only to look at this book as another point of view as to how to write and enjoy it.
