Should Being an American Citizen be as Easy as 123 Anymore? ~SlightOfHand

Ok, i'm probably gonna bring up alot of stuff before we start debating so take a seat and get comfortable.

I was listening to the savage nation just yesterday and an interesting subject came up about a terrorist in jail. Well, he was born in America and is therefor considered an American citizen. Which gives him much more rights than he deserves. Should this man be treated as if he were an American after committing treason? Thats just crazy if you ask me.

Have you ever heard of an anchor baby? It's the ultimate Korean retirement plan. Come into America as an illegal alien while you in late pregnancy, have the baby, and go back to Korea sinse he is now considered an American citizen. The mother sends him back to America when he's old enough and then the boy brings his mother to America and get free American citizenship. For people who don't even care about America, but are only taking advantage of it.

Basicly, all you have to do is be born here to be a citizen....Its that easy. There are immagrants here who could care less about where they live and consider themselved Mexican even when they've lived here for 20 years, and get mad because their daughters are doing too much American stuff. lol sorry i can't help but laugh.

It seems to me that we need to do SOMETHING about this, there are people waiting to jump across the border right before they go into labor and let their children who may be terorist get to be an American citizen, ITS HARDER TO GET YOUR DRIVERS LESSONS THAN TO BE CONSIDERED A CITIZEN OF THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. It just doesnt add up for me.

It was suggested that when a kid is around 17 he take a small test on American history, the constitution rights, ect. Just to show that they care about our country. I think its a great idea, and i would sign up for the test immediatly when i was old enough.

So what do you think, should it be harder to get your drivers liscence than to be a citizen here? SlightOfHand

Date: 8/15/2002 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 52866    i just have something to say to the title...it is NOT as easy as 1-2-3. Don't make the assumption unless you've been in the position
Date: 8/15/2002 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I think you have a very good point here. Not anything tooo hard, but just basic stuff about our country on the tests. It is a shame that it's harder to get a driver's license than to become a citizen these days. Gives you something to think about.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    Yeah it is a problem. I wish the government would do something about it.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    lol@Luv Bug , its called a metaphor ( if thats how you spell it)
Date: 8/15/2002 8:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    and if they fail the test they are deported to another country??? i rarely hear about people comming and having thier child in america just to have thier child a citizen... a woman cannot fly in her third trimester so that is what i find odd to all this.. and another thing i find odd.. is that one of the plane hijackkers applyed to be an american citizen and all his paperwork went through and just after the sept 11th... his paperwork went through and he was a american citizen... i think they should do better screening and as for the baby born and then they leave... the child should have to spend some time in the US(not be fully grown up in another country) and the mexican thing(i know i'm ranting now*L*) it's nice to hold onto your heritage and not forget where you came from
Date: 8/15/2002 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 53806    NO comment!
Date: 8/15/2002 8:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    yeah and um i'm a he. >.< i should change my name to something more dark. I'm not sayings it bad not to forget your heritage, but to consider yourself a Mexican and complain about your daughters doing American Girlie stuff like wearing dresses and maybe a playing a sport is bad then you need to pack your bags buddy. America is a place where people from all around the world come to together. We have a border, we have a language, and we have a culture, and it all needs to stay that way. If you come here just to take advantage of opportunities then go to Ukraine.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    dont be rude you guys, theres no need. This is a debate post and it needs to stay that way. Compliment her on seperate post or in message, thanks.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    What you suggest defeats the entire purpose of America and our Constitution. You're suggestion doesn't even border on logical. Where do you suggest these people that fail the test go? Or how about the 17 year olds that don't know how to read? Oh yes, both groups exist. Perhaps you should think about concentrating your efforts to make this a better country in a different area to be sure that most can even READ a Constitution test or a driver's test.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:43:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    well it wasnt my idea to have the test it was brought up on the radio. Lets see if i had it my way, what i would do is.... have every person in America learn English, and use there natural language scarcely. If you fight for an opposing army against the United States then you should not be treated as if an American citizen. All baby's that were illegally born here to never be able to become an American citizen, when they are around 17 to take a test, and if they do fairly well they may enter the country and become a citizen.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Pack your bags, the border is that way? What kind of a statement is that to make to someone? Not all illegals are Mexicans and not all Mexicans are illegals. They may not like the degradation of their culture through the generational gap, but it does not mean they do not appreciate the freedom offered in this country. And as for what 53052 said, he is correct. The INS needs to be reformed in a big way. One of the terrorists was DENIED citizenship to stay in the country. Wanna know why he was still here to commit 9-11? Because his wife WON citizenship in the INS LOTTERY. So he was able to stay AFTER he was denied citizenship. At least this is what I have come to know as truth-I could very well be reciting hearsay. Point is, we can't punish the people who are natural born citizens for the actions of non-citizens, we shouldn't take away what our Constitution deems our God given rights as natural citizens just because it all seems to easy to a few people who don't seem to appreciate how wonderful it is to automatically have rights. Perhaps you wouldn't feel this way if you had died in the Revolutionary War to obtain these rights-they knew what it was like to fight for what they wanted to be rightfully theirs. And thanks to them we have the best darn pieces of paper known to man-they're called "Declaration of Independence" and "Constitution." Its bad enough the government itself is already treading both. Now you want to do away with natural born citizens? Cripes...what you're suggesting is done American Government classes.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    The test to become a naturalized citizen for the United States, for an alien, is extremely difficult. One of my professors doubts that most citizens would even pass it-so there, that takes care of your foreigners become citizens. You still haven't convinced me I should give up my right to be a natural born citizen.
Date: 8/15/2002 8:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    Well SOMETHING needs to be done about it. m sure our forefathers wouldnt want people to come here just to take advantage of it. It just isnt right.
Date: 8/15/2002 9:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    For the most part, the only people really "taking advantage" without being natural born are illegal aliens. It's a rare occasion to come here, have a kid, and go back to your country. Unless, of course, you have statistical evidence to prove otherwise?
Date: 8/15/2002 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    It's pathetic that we can't even keep illegals out, if they can come in so easily than so can a terrorist. More precautions should be taken and stricter laws should be put into effect.
Date: 8/15/2002 11:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 7952    It is ALOT harder to become a citizen of another country than you think unless you are to be considered a refugee, and even then it is hard to fit into the United Nations definition of a refugee you need to prove various things in order to obtain that.
Date: 8/15/2002 11:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 7952    Persephone is right, my teacher said that in Australia half of us wouldnt even past the test to become a citizen, its ridiculous.
Date: 8/16/2002 12:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 3321    Here's a bit of interesting factoid I'm sure most didn't know: Without illegal aliens the Texas economy would bottom out. The aliens are cheap labor, no or minimal insurance, and if you practice unfair hiring or payroll-which would be obvious if you are hiring illegals-they are illegal and therefore cannot do anything about it. And on top of the little payout on their end, they invest into the economy-buy food, clothing, homes, cars, gas, etc. Living essentials. Their is less output than input on the part of the economy. Granted there are many people in Texas who are citizens who deserve better pay and jobs, we recognize this, but many businesses would go out of business from lack of cheap labor, and the Texan economy would take a nosedive.
Date: 8/16/2002 12:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i remember when leno went out walking the streets asking people basic questions what are on the "american citizen test" and very few people got them right! even the audience as a group didn't do that great
Date: 8/16/2002 1:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    I honestly wouldn't care if the texas econamy went down as long as illegal immagrants are not in our country.
Date: 8/16/2002 1:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    the country was BUILT on immagrants!!!
Date: 8/16/2002 5:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54429    not i-l-l-e-g-a-l ones
Date: 8/16/2002 7:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    at one point they were...
Date: 8/17/2002 12:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    I'm sure you don't care, but I'd be willing to bet the people of Texas would. Part of being an American is caring when other Americans are in jeoapardy and when a state is going downhill. Now, as you were saying...being an American? Who cares about the Texans is what you imply?
Date: 8/17/2002 12:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    I'm sure that you're not aware of the Fourteenth Amendment that is based on PERSONHOOD, not Citizenship.
