This is fairly long..But worth the read I promise...
It had been so long since Caleb though of her. He tried not to focus on the past too much because of her, because he was frightened to think of her. He gazed down at the shattered glass of the picture frame. Then he looked down at the picture. There she was. Staring back at him with those bold brown eyes and her smile on her light compected face and her perfectly dtraight teeth behind her full lips. She was a sight. He remember back to the last day he had talked to her. It was raining hard and he had dressed up. He carried a dozen white roses with him walking to her in slow strides.
He came back to reality. He sat down with the picture and ran his finger over it softly. AS if it were human and sensitive to touch. Then he remembered back again. He had arrived at her house to see her. It had been so long since they had seen another. But while in college they wrote letters and called each other. He knocked on the door and Mrs.Young answered it. "Paige is in the den." she said letting him inside. Caleb walked into the den to find Paige tying a red ribbon in her hair They left together to the Cafe. Paige ran her fingeres over Calebs lips. She studied them intently like there was a lifetime of history written in each crevice. She looked up and smiled. "There is so much I could tell you about college but all I want is to be here with you and see that we're still feeling the same for each other." she said. In the pit of his stomach Caleb was feeling guilty.
Caleb just realized he was cluthing the picture tightly in his palm. He tried to put it in the top of the closet but he ended up knocking down a box. The opened it and found lots of letters and cards and small things from his relationship with Paige. Then he saw "The Letter". His whole body froze and in an instant it all cam rushing at him.
Paige called him to her house to talk to her the night before she left back to college. Caleb decided tonight he'd tell her. So he arrived and she greeted him with kisses and hugs. She took him to her room and sat him on her bed. Then she grabbed a box and gave it to him. He was terrified to open it. The smell of her lavender candle was now becoming intoxicating to him. He shoved it back at her. "I need to tell you something." he said. She opened the box and took out an exquisite watch. She looked on the back of it and read an inscription.
"My love, Whenever you feel alone, Just remember its, One minute less until we'll finally be together. Paige".
Caleb broke out into a sweat now. He felt horrible and he hadnt even told her yet. Then he said finally, "Paige...I don't love you anymore. College has changed me. I am in love with someone else and I plan on being with her for a long time." he then took a deep breath & stood up. Paige sat there and stared blankly at the spot where he had been sitting. She closed her eyes and an expression of agony passed over her face. Tears slowly filled her eyes and she looked up at him with the questions of, "How?" and "Why?". Her lips were quivering and her hands were trembling."I am sorry Paige. I better go. I am really sorry." he said leaving. She was crying to him even after he left her room. "I LOVED YOU! I LOVED YOU CALEB!"
"Good-Bye Mrs.Young. Have a nice evening." he said going out the door. He was still sweating when he got home. He didn't know what would happen. He felt terrible. After all they went through in school and their relationship, he tossed it all away. About 20 minutes later he got a phone call. Someone was crying. It was Mrs.YOung. She was mumbling stuff and he couldn't hear her. He drove back over to Paige's. There were police cars around the house. "Oh God!" he cried. He ran into the house and up the stairs. There on the floor lay Paige's lifeless body in a sitting position. She had 4 stab wounds on her chest and her hand was covered in blood. The watch was on the table and had been smashed into many pieces with a hammer. He looked at her. Sitting there with her eyes wide open and full of fear and pain and sorrow. Her skin was now white. It looked like a marble statue that had been chisled to look alive. Then he noticed one off thing. You could see streaks down her face from her crying. But the streaks were red. THEY WERE BLOOD! He didn't know what to think. He felt as if his mind left his body. He saw a small letter by the watch wrapped with her red ribbon. He grabbed it and slipped it into his pocket. He was then questioned and told to go home by the police. He got home and went to his room. He took out the letter and untied the ribbon...
Suddenly he opened his eyes and Caleb realized he had dropped the letter. He picked it up. Being careful cause it was old and torn by now. He slowly opened it and read, "Caleb, I am sorry you feel for me no longer. I hope you find the happiness you never had with me, with her. You were all I ever wanted in this world and now that you are no longer mind I don't want to live in it. So this is good-bye. I love you. And if my spirit lives on into another life, I hope our paths cross
Love & Farewell, Paige"
Caleb felt hot streaks falling down his face. He was crying. He got up and walked around his room. He felt horrible. He had done this. He broke her heart. He drove her to this.
He began to rip stuff apart in his room. Then he left and began to go upstairs. As he made his way to the roof of the college he remembered the last day he spoke to her.
There he stood with the white roses. He bent down and by her grave laid them there. He ran his hand over the markings on her tombstone. "Paige Yound. Beloved daughter & friend. Taken too soon". Caleb was crying for her. He kept apologizing to her. How he didn't mean for this. How he wanted to fina way for them to still eb friend. He stood up and felt the wind hit him hard.
Now Caleb was on the roof and it was the wind up there that was beating him hard and stabbing his face like cold needles. He was still crying. He screamed, "IM SORRY!". He wiped away his tears with his arm and saw it had red smeared on it now..Blood..Like paiges tears....Then he jumped off the roof and as he fell against the wind he heard the soft echo in his ears of her voice, "I forgive you my love."
