I live in Canada, but my great-grandfather lived in the US. Well, he actually smuggled alcohol in from Canada when it was outlawed by the American government, then he moved back to Canada to get away from the law. Good post ^_^ |

My grandmother (father's side)who was a full blooded Indian, and my great grandmother (mother's side) came from what is known as the Occaneechi/ Saponi tribes..These Native Americans occupied the Piedmont of North Carolina and Virginia.. The Saponi, the Occaneechi, the Eno, the Tutelo, and other related tribes such as the Cheraw agreed to join together in 1713.. All of these were remnants of the Siouan tribes that had lived in North Carolina and Virginia long before America was discovered...I (along with several genealogists) have also traced my family roots to what is known as Melungeons who were a group of dark-skinned people with European features found living in the mountains of Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia by explorers as early as the mid-1600's. These people were farmers living in cabins and speaking broken english. They were not Native Americans nor black or white. They practiced Christian religion and when asked who they were they replied that they were 'Portyghee.' ..No one has proven where the name Melungeon originated, but, it was long believed to be of French origin meaning melange or mixture. These settlers eventually mingled with several Native American tribes including Powhatans, Pamunkeys, Creeks, Catawbas, Yuchis, Cherokees,etc..My mother had always told me that we were the three "I's"..Indian, Italian and Irish, :) but after doing some deep family research, I found quite a few pieces of treasured information. I am in the process of putting up my own web site. It's a lot of hard work and very time consuming, but it's worth it all. |

Yo TC, well...I would say that my ancestors have been in the US for a VERY long time. See, my people the NZ Maori have an old saying "No Hawaiiki Nui, Hawaiiki Roa, Hawaiiki Pamamao" Which means "From the Big Hawaiiki, the long Hawaiiki, the original/first/authentic Hawaiiki". Its is a saying to remind us where we came from. Firstly, Hawaiiki is considered our Ancestral Homeland...yet there is much debate as to where Hawaiiki is. It ISN'T Hawaii by the way. My people were migrant people, and this saying is believed to pertain to that migration. Hawaiiki Pamamao is believed to be somewhere in Africa...Hawaiiki Roa is believed to be the European/Chinese/Soviet continents...and Hawaiiki Nui is believed to be the Americas. There are many tribal/ancient cultures through those areas that have very similar mythology to the Maori, many similar belief structures and rituals pertaining to life, birth, marriage, death etc...which for most cultures remain unchanged, for those are the cornerstone events of any culture. Many believe that the Maori and the NA Indian share bloodlinks...for we have VERY commone mythology/rituals etc. From the Americas we migrated into the Pacific, settled a number of the Islands before eventually migrating on to NZ. So how long have my ancestors been in the US?? Well...I would believe many of the US ancestors are probably mine too. Peace, |
