Cliques, jocks, and inequality...

I don't mean to sound like a jerk by labeling a good seventy percent of my classmates this, but I really don't have a choice. What can I call that chunk but jocks/preppies? They pretty much rule my school and dictate what goes on everywhere. I figure that the smartest thing to do is to avoid them at all costs, though it's almost virtually impossible in my school. They own the dang place! And the frequent pep rallies and such doesn't help. I hate homecoming week, especially, for I feel like I'm surrounded by all these silly kids who are so gung-ho on sports and gyms class and the jocks. Especially football. Last year, one of our star football players died in an accident and a pall fell over our school; everybody seemed to be mourning for him and yes, it was pretty sad, though I didn't know the guy. But in our school, if some of the so-called psyco people passed, nobody would make a big deal at all. They'd mourn for a day and be done with it the day after. But with the big honchos on campus, they mourn all year. It kinda makes me sick that everybody bases you on your popularity status and I am definitely one of the more unpopular people in my school; I don't dress like they do, I don't go around cutting everybody down, I'm not mean to people, and I don't play sports. I find the popular kids in my school to be very vindictive and they don't care who they hurt. They push the outcasts, sometimes to the limits, sometimes past the limits, and I think that's the main reason why there are tragedies in school (i.e. the Columbine incident). For example in my school; I was friends with this gal who was hated by a majority of the school just because of an ugly rumor that wasn't true. One popular girl was picking on her for no reason and my friend called her the "b" word. And my friend was the one who got in trouble, even though she did that out of defense! It isn't fair. I think that this "jockism" in my school is almost as unfair as what was happening with the Jim Crow laws. I've been treated like worthless trash by popular people ever since junior high and I toughened up quite a bit through my experiences. It isn't all that tough for me to deal with the mean people anymore, so I just say, "whatever" and ignore it. I can't wait to graduate; I only have one year left. It's just not fair that the jocks are treated like gods while the people who write, draw, are poor, are goths, are fat, et. cetera are shunted aside like dead fish.

What do you all think about inequality among cliques and popularity status in schools? I think it's crap and that it's the main reason why school shootings start. This is just how I feel, so you don't have to agree with me. If you had good high school experiences, I am happy for you, but I did not, so I do not look forward to going back come September third. : (

Date: 8/24/2002 11:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 20559    Wow this is a great post.. very thought provoking. I am not sure what I think about this as I knew it went on in my school but I never succumbed to it I hung out with everybody . I agree that cliquism is how tragedies start because it makes people feel like there is no other way out. I think the best thing to do is just to be yourself and not care what people think.. it can be very hard tho
Date: 8/24/2002 11:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 5940    I hate to say this, for I do understand from my days at school, it's a part of life as we know it. No, I am not trying to be-little your post, but as one travels forward in life, college, or career, these things are among us. But all is not lost. How one handles and views the situation they're in can make the difference. Afterall, what you wish to do in life will have the same types of people to deal with. But how you look at it will make life easier, or difficult.
