"I missed you so much honey!" They kissed and then went to pick up his luggage. "Why don't we call mom and dad and see if they can watch the kids one more night. We can spend a romantic night together."
"That sounds great!" She glanced back over Jeff's shoulder as she hugged him again, and saw Jon. He smiled at her, and she timidly smiled back.
That night Jeff took her out to dinner. Then he bought them a bottle of wine. They spent all night and part of the next day in bed. Around four, they drove over to pick up the kids. Allison hugged her father fiercly. Kris was asleep, so Cyndi gently bucked him in his carseat without waking him.
Two weeks later, Cyndi began to feel sick. Lindsay came over to watch the kids until Jeff got home. On the third day Jeff made her an appointment and got Lindsay to drive her there and watch Kris while she was in his office.
"Congratulations Mrs. Cantrell, your pregnant again."
"Uh oh."
"What's wrong? I thought you and Jeff were trying to have a baby?"
"Oh we are, but see I sort of had a one night stand and now I don't know who the father is."
"Well, there is a new test that we have that can detect the father before birth. YOu will have to be in the hospital for three days. It's very risky though. It's only been done on two other women. Both of them felt a little sick afterward and the first woman's baby was born mentally retarted."
"Is there anyway this can be done without Jeff knowing?"
"Yes. All you have to do is bring in something with his and the other potential father's DNA on it, such as hair, saliva, or things of that nature. You can call me and see if something would be a potential match before you come in. Also, we need you to fill out these forms. Another thing is that we suggest that you wait at least two more weeks because the test results are better after six weeks."
"That's great!" That night she was going to tell Jeff she was pregnant and when the two weeks were up, she was going to tell him that she had to have gallbladder surgery. This was her doctor's idea. She never got to tell him that night, because when she got home, he was in a bad mood. Kris was crying and Allison was watching cartoons instead of doing her homework. Tonya was over and supposed to stay for dinner and then Jeff was going to take her home.
First Jeff came in screaming at Allison, calling her a lazy brat and making her go to her room for the rest of the night. Then Cyndi jumped to her defense.
"Jeff, leave her alone. She's only eight years old" Just then Kris started to scream louder.
"Can't you shut that baby up?"
"Excuse me, I've been with him all day. Why don't you take care of him for a change!"
"You're the wife, you do it!!" THen he noticed Tonya. "I thought I told you my house was not some teenage hangout!" He continued screaming at her while Tonya slipped off to call her father. Just then she heard a slap. She hung up the phone and found Cyndi laying on the ground crying. Jeff had stomed into his home office and slammed the door.
"Cyndi, are you all right??"
"Come on. You're coming home with me. What about the kids?"
"They'll be fine. He's never hit his kids." Just then Tonya's father arrived. Cyndi grabbed her purse and joined Tonya. Cyndi stayed at Tonya's for two weeks and Jeff never once tried to contact her. The day before her surgery, Angela came over and they made up. She stayed at the hospital with Tonya while Cyndi was in surgery. The whole process was only supposed to last an hour. After two and a half hours, the doctor emerged looking grim. Cyndi's body had reacted in a bad way and now she was in a coma. They weren't sure about the baby yet, but more than likely, it wouldn't survive if she didn't wake up very soon. The doctor said that he needed to call Jeff, but Tonya volunteered to.
"Jeff, this is Tonya. I have something to tell you. The night Cyndi left, she was going to tell you that she was pregnant Well, today she had to have gall bladder surgery and something went terribly wrong. Right now, she's in a coma."
"Oh my God! I'll be right there."
Twenty minutes later, Jeff arrived with Allison and Kris. He gave to kids to Tonya and went to go speak to the doctor. Cyndi remained in the coma for three days. On the fourth day, she finally woke up.
"Jeff, is that you?" she mumbled.
"Cyndi, honey, you're awake!! Oh baby, I'm so sorry for everything. I lvoe you so much." He kissed her dry lips.
"Jeff, what about the baby?"
"I'm sorry sweetheart. You lost it. We can always try again."
Later that night, the doctor came in to talk to her. He informed her that the baby was actually Jeff's. Three weeks later she was released from the hospital.
