Mirror Image Pt.3

So here I am at the river, at night. I was never allowed to go to the river when I was a child even during the day. Mom was always afraid something bad would happen to me. I have to admit it was alittle creepy but I had to find Dee. I walked along the bike path and could see a light in the distance. "Dee, where are you? Dee." I called. Finally I came to a little building. Looked like a place they would store some kind of equipment. Then I heard a dog barking. It sounded like it was coming from inside this place. I tried to look through the window, but they were very dirty, and there was no light inside. "He's in there I know that's him." Dee screamed as she came around the other side. I also screamed because she came up so suddenly; scared me to death. Well close enough that my heart was pounding in my chest. "Let's see if we can get this door opened." I tried turning the knob knowing that it had to be locked. "We'll just have to come back tomorrow when someone will be here. Your dog probably was found by the person that works here. We'll just explain it to them tomorrow." I told Dee who by now was crying. She looked so sweet and my heart just went out to her. I knew what it was like to loose your dog.

Then the memories started to come back. I was here with a friend looking for my dog. She took me by the hand as I was screaming Pepper, Pepper. She said that we had to go and we would be back the next day. I wanted him now. He couldn't stay in that place all alone, in the dark. He would be cold and he had no food. What happened, I don't remember, I never saw that dog again, ever. Did we try to get him the next day. Why couldn't I remember.

"We're going to find a way in there." I told her. I looked around and found a rock. The door was pretty secure but the wood on the window was very worn. I threw the rock through the window and it broke to pieces. After I did that I hoped that Pepper was far away from the glass when it shattered. I put my hands through and called Pepper and she came to me. I could feel him and he licked my hand. Tears were streeming down my face, it just made me so happy. I lifted Dee up and put her through the window. She turned to face me "Thank you so much, I've missed him. He's my only friend and we do everything together." I told her to get Pepper and try to open the door from the inside. I waited a few minutes I didn't hear anything. "Dee, can you get the door opened? Dee, what's taking so long?" She didn't answer. I went over to the window and stuck my head in. As my eyes became accustomed to the darkness I looked around and no one was there. No, little girl and no dog. I must be loosing my mind. What am I doing here, I thought. I had to sit down, this was the Twilight Zone for sure. I sat on the ground and just cried for I don't know how long. Then I finally had to get myself together and go home.

I was so exhausted when I got back that I barely made it to my bed. I did sleep but I know that I had strange dreams and tossed and turned alot. When I awoke in the morning the pillows and blanket were on the floor. What a dream that was, I thought. Or should I say a nightmare. I must of been very tired the night before because I didn't change into my nightshirt I still had my clothes on. I went to the kitchen and made some strong coffee and sat down at the table. Suddenly I heard a scratching at the back door. There it was again. What the ... I went to the door and opened it. I couldn't believe my eyes. There sat the most beautful Wire Haired Terrier. He was white with some black spots. It was Pepper, the dog I had lost years ago. How could that be he would be so old now but it really was him. I got down on the ground and hugged him and he licked my face. I remembered what Dee had said that if I helped her find her dog that she would help me and she did. I never owned another dog after I lost Pepper many years ago. I guess that I always had him in my heart and didn't want another. Now I had him back. "We better get you a bath." I told him as he walked right in the door he finally came home.

How it changed my life:
