ok, for english class i was assigned to write a short story. Now i'm not the best at that, so anyways here's my story. Now what do you think of it? Most of my friends told me the ending is too picture perfect. So i was thinking of ending the story with irony and not having a perfect ending. ANyways here is the story and tell me what you think.
******HANDICAP*******
There was a cool summer breeze slowly moving along the trees and fading away slowly. Katherine also known as Kat, was going for her daily kayak ride. It was early afternoon, the sun was bright and the sky was blue, a perfect day for a nice and peaceful kayak ride. Katherine liked these rides, all by herself. She could just relax and reflect without anyone disturbing her. She was on summer break and spending her vacation at an uncle’s cabin with her father, a retired physician, nearby Lake Superior. Kat was 17 years old, she was very independent, she didn’t like people pushing her around and telling her what to do, she decided what she was going to do. She was extremely strong, emotionally and physically. After her mother died 2 years ago, she just moved on, and went on to the positive side of life. She had no siblings but she was extremely close to her father. She didn’t have many friends; in fact she didn’t have any at all. She was home-schooled since she was in grade 3, after her accident. Her best friend probably was her pet cat, whiskers. Everywhere she went she always had whiskers on her lap purring away, as she would slowly caress her. In her kayak she was daydreaming, fantasizing about meeting her prince charming, who was she kidding, she knew she couldn’t meet anyone, she just couldn’t. Suddenly she hears this loud shout “Watch out!” still daydreaming, she is taken away when her kayak abruptly hits another kayak. She was daydreaming so much, that she didn’t realize that she had run into another kayak. “I’m so sorry, I guess I was just daydreaming” she apologized “That’s alright, it’s such a beautiful day, who isn’t daydreaming?” he answered back Tim was 18 years old, a senior at Riverdale high school. He had an athletic body and dirty blond hair, which spiked up. He was wearing sunglasses and a dark blue t-shirt. “Yeah, I agree” said Kat, with a small smile on her face “By the way, my name’s Tim, and what’s your names?” he curiously asked, to casually start a conversation “Katherine, but you can call me Kat, do you live around this area?” said Kat casually back “Yeah, I live about 30 minutes away from here, and you? You don’t live here right? I would have seen you around if you did” replied Tim “I’m just on summer vacation, my dad and I are staying with my uncle around Barker Avenue” “Barker Avenue? I live around there, maybe you can come by and meet some of my friends and maybe we can just watch a movie or something” said Tim Katherine blushed, it was the first time she really had a real conversation with a guy, who she slowly started to like. She liked the way he smiled, looked and just how nice and courteous he was to her. But who was she kidding, she couldn’t go out with him, she just couldn’t. What would he think? “Sorry, but I can’t” said Kat softly “Oh …ok” replied Tim obviously a bit upset “It’s just that –” Kat slowly started saying “No, really it’s ok” interrupted Tim with a smile Katherine, smiled back and they both started rowing their kayaks. They were going faster and faster, when it was obvious they had started a little race. “You have pretty good arm strength there” stated Tim “Yeah, so do you …how about a friendly race? From right over here to shore” asked Kat “Ok, but only if I get a headstart” said Tim jokingly “On your marks, get set – GO!” screamed Katherine They were off, Tim made a good start, but gradually slowed down, as that fast start made his arms tired very fast, Kat reached him quickly and passed him, without stopping he kept going and she won that race, easily “Wow! You really are good” said Tim gasping for air “Yeah, so are you!” replied Kat “I have to ask you again, are you sure you don’t want to come over?” asked Tim “Please Tim, I’m not like you, I just can’t” said Kat in a soft voice A couple of tears were falling down her cheeks, Tim didn’t notice that, as he was too confused. Tim didn’t understand why she was acting that way. They had so much in common, they are both athletic and are interested in the same things, why does she keep rejecting his offers. With a sigh, Tim gets out of his kayak places it on shore and reaches out his hand, to pull Kat out of her kayak. “Here let me help you get out of there” said Tim “Actually I think I’ll stay a little while longer” replied Katherine “You’ve been out here all day, aren’t you tired or hungry?” asked Tim in a concerning voice “Please Tim, leave me alone, just please leave” Tears were flowing down he cheeks, and then he noticed she was crying. He didn’t know what else to do, he turned around and walked away. He looked back and he saw this tall and plumped man walking towards her, pushing around a wheelchair. Intrigued, Tim kept looking, that plump man was Katherine’s father. Tim didn’t know what to think all he could do was watch. Katherine’s father noticed she was crying, but he just gave her a small hug and helped her onto the wheelchair, and he slowly pushed her away. Tim kept staring in shock but in sympathy, he kept staring until they were out of sight. A couple hours later, at Katherine’s uncle’s home, theirs a rap of the door. It takes a couple more knocks until Katherine pushed her wheelchair next to the door and open it. There stood Tim, he didn’t say anything he just stood there, looking down on Kat. It took him awhile to realize he should say something. “W-why didn’t you tell me?” said Tim in a bit of a stutter “Tell you what? That I’m crippled? That I’m a handicap?” snapped back Katherine “I’m sorry, I mean I really didn’t realize you were ...handicap” answered back Tim “Look, ok you pity me and you came here to apologize, well don’t bother, now if you don’t mind I have other things to do” “I’m not here to pity on you, I just wanted to tell you, that even if your in a wheelchair, I still want to you come out with me” said Tim “...” Katherine couldn’t think of what to say “I’m not going to look at you any different, I like the way you are, honestly” said Tim truthfully “Just because your in a wheelchair, I’m still going to treat you normally, it’s you I care about” Katherine had a couple tears falling down her cheeks again, but she looked up to him and smiled. He motioned her to help her push her out of the little cabin, and they talked and talked until they finally reached his home. It was a nice small but yet cozy little home. She met three of his friends, Sarah, Brian and Shawn, she realized that neither of them said anything about her disability. She realized, that it didn’t matter what her ability was to do, but who she was, and that’s all that mattered to her and Tim.
