Judge Sam Davis had been the Justice of the Peace for many years in Allentown, New Jersey. His unpopularity grew, and in 1883, some opponents ran their own candidate, Abner Robbins, against Judge Davis. The election was a colse one, and Abner Robbins barely won, tallying only seven votes more than the incumbent judge.
When the judge found out who Abner was, he did not even fish his term, but resigned in indignation.
Abner Robbins was the name given to the wooden cigar store Indian outside a downtown shop.
