Do you think that convicted sex offenders should have to register with the city they are living in?

I am working on a research paper for my Composition II class at the college I am attending. The research is on whether or not the people think that convicted sex offenders should have to register with the city they are living in. Some people think that this is against the offenders civil rights . What is your opinion? Would you feel comfortable knowing that a convicted sex offender was living in your neighborhood ? When answering this ad please state whether you are male or female. It will help to categorize my collected data. Please do not leave your name. This will only be used a part of a larger survey. Thanks so much for your help.

Date: 8/13/2000 10:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Female-18***Well, I do believe that it is against the offenders rights, as some of them were convicted on basis of wrong place wrong time, and some of them for cases in which they are not guilty at all. Take for instance the innocent boyfriend who's *drama queen* girlfriend cries rape. That man, although convicted, should not have to register. He didn't do it, but in the eyes of the law he did. Many times when residents of a subdivision or area find out about a sex offender, they basically harass the person to no end, doing all they can to make the person move, and their life miserable. Now, don't get me wrong, there ARE some real sickos out there, but those that were wrongly convicted, or convicted of a misdemeanor, such as simple harrassment-(flirting with a woman and then charged with harrassment)-should not have to register....But, on the humane side, as a parent, I sure know I'd want to know about a sexual predator in my area....I guess that this issue is really torn between the moral dilemna and the political arena....Good luck...
Date: 8/13/2000 10:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 5484    yes, there is 3 around the corner from where we live, and it is nice to know,i am a survivor of sexual abuse and rape, and as a parent now,it is helpful in knowing the y live near,so i keep extra tabs on my son...
Date: 8/13/2000 10:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 7654    I am a female,Yes I think that they should register not only in the city but the county that they live in.While in corrections I had 896 male inmates working under me,some of these inmates were sex offenders. Some will tell you that it is like a sickness .The urge never goes away, then others will tell you how they hate themselves for this. But more than half of the inmates that I have worked with will tell you that they want to register. It is an insurance to them also. They are required to have somany hours of counciling and classes on this befor they are released.~~~~~
Date: 8/13/2000 10:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 8717    I am female. This may sound extreme but i have no respect for anyone who can do such a thing. I often think that convicted child sex offenders, rapist, and molesters should have a big Tattoo on their forehead so that we can protect ourselves and children against them. How many times does a sex offender get out of jail and reoffend? Quite often. Of course this is just MY opinion
Date: 8/13/2000 10:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 13723    I reckon that they should be castrated. They will never hurt anyone again that way.
Date: 8/13/2000 11:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    In Illinois, as far as I know, sex offender ARE required to register in the county....we have a state web page with lists...and addresses
Date: 8/13/2000 11:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 8274    Female, mother of 8! I truly believe these persons should have to register. But, on the other hand, what Perse said makes good sense too. So, along with there registration should be an account of the charges AND the defense. Let the parents decide who they think is a possible problem. Peace and Love...
Date: 8/14/2000 12:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 4231    Male-14 I feel they should have to register..I think that people should be let well aware that they are around, cause then they can't ever do it again....
Date: 8/14/2000 12:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 9912    I'm a female. I believe they should register. I would feel better knowing where they lved with my children. i have (sadly) 2 family members who have to do just this. and i feel it is justified and only right we should feel somewhat protected. The sad part of it all ppl i grew up with and trusted are on the list in my home town. Now I could never trust my children with these ppl i loved and trusted. So yes i do tthnk it is right. I could think of alot worse to do to these ppl.
Date: 8/14/2000 4:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 8430    Female/38/2sons...YES!!...My city in MI just started that this past year....
Date: 8/14/2000 4:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 13886    I dont think convicted sex offenders should live anywhere outside of a jail wall!
Date: 8/14/2000 9:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 11939    Female-33. Yes and no. No, because in this country the law state that if you are found guily of a crime you will serve time in a prison facility until their sentence for their crime is served. Once they are released they do have the same civil rights that the rest of us do. If they can make sex offenders register with the city, who's to say it will stop there. Next it might be the people who get sent to prison for burglary or fraud or tax evasion or for stealng cars or someone who simply goes and rents porno movies that are going to have to register "just in case" they might do something wrong. Where will it stop as to who has to register with the city? Time served means time served in prison not in you own town, neighborhood or home. If every person that had been in prison was made to register with the city then 50% of our neighbors would be registered criminals. Ok, now for Yes, All sex offenders are sick individuals and just because of their crime they should have to suffer the embarrassment of others knowing what they did. I am kind of mixed on what should be done. If the person is on probation after getting out of prison, yes they should have to register until the are not on probation anymore. If they come out of prison not on probation then maybe no they should not have to register. In Kansas the sex offender goes from prison to a rehabilitation center for what I think is 1 year (Not quite sure on this lenght of time) and then they will still register with the city. Good Luck on your paper!
Date: 8/14/2000 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 1432    Female-married with two kids..I agree with 13886 they should never be let out of jail!...
Date: 8/14/2000 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 7683    Female 27, if the person is a repeat offender then YES, I know it sounds horrible but everyone deserves a second chance, and sometimes a person is wrongfully convicted.
Date: 8/14/2000 11:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 6503    I agree with Persephone. Sometimes it's a case of wrong place wrong time, or a girl who cries rape and no rape has been done. I have known a guy that had that done to him, he was dating a girl who was 17 he was 20 and her dad pressed charges against him because he caught him with her, but she was there willingly, but because she was under age, dad pressed charges. Sometimes that would hurt the person. But I also believe that there are people out there that should register with the state, county, and city. It's a tough call. I also think that they should list out what crimes and punshments were done so people know.
Date: 8/14/2000 11:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 10866    I would love to know who to keep my kids far away from, but.... there is a friend of mine that was convicted of rape a couple of years ago and we all know it was nonsense, but he is registered with the state.. An innocent man.. I dont know, both ways are in a sense fair and unfair...
Date: 8/14/2000 11:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 10866    Oh yeah, female, 30 tomorrow.. ugh!! and Mother of 4 children...
Date: 8/14/2000 11:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 6503    Sorry forgot to list that I am Female -30 yrs old
Date: 8/14/2000 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    I THINK ALL MAJOR CRIMINALS SHOULD HAVE A BIG TATTO ON THEIR FOREHEAD: LIKE MURDERERS WOULD HAVE A BIG "M." AND SEX OFFENDERS WOULD HAVE A "S.O." ETC. ETC. This way the innocent people would be more cautious of them!!! I am so tired of hearing about criminal rights! What about innocent/victims rights!!!
Date: 8/14/2000 1:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    BTW, I am a female
Date: 8/14/2000 2:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 10866    What about the ones that are convicted and are innocent?? That wouldnt be quite fair??
Date: 8/14/2000 2:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 9797    My friend works in a doctors surgery checking everyones medical records for the computer in the UK. She told me 3 child sex offenders was living in our small town. She wouldn't give me names or address's for fear of loosing her job. In our newspaper which covers the whole of the uk had a list of all known sex offenders and where they lived. This included offenders who looked at pictures from the internet. I thought HOORAY this is what we need in this country.
Date: 8/14/2000 2:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 9797    oh i forgot i'm female/30
Date: 8/14/2000 2:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 10344    Male...I dont think it's fair if you have served your time...It would be like giving a life sentence. I think repeat offenders should, but i also think if you are a repeat offender, you should be incarcerated for life. There should be no second chance for this offence. If my next door neighbor or close neighbors were convicted pedophiles or rapist, i would sure want to know for the benefit of my familly. This is a really tough question. Maybe if you are the kind of person who would do this, maybe you should'nt get a second chance. It's not like it's a misdemeanor comparable to shop lifting or the like. You have to be seriously ill if you can do these things to another human being! I really dont think i can give a solid answer, this is so tough......RAZORTALON
Date: 8/14/2000 6:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 12004    Female 36....I believe they should be registered especially the offenders who hurt children
speaking of second chances...the children they hurt dont get a second chance....so why should the sex offender....

Date: 8/14/2000 6:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 13079    Female 37....The way I see it Once a pervert always a pervert......YES they should have to register...I have worked in corrections for 10 years and the sentences are WAY WAY to small the over crowding in the jail is the reason they give but longer and stiffer punishments for perverts would not work..........They can not change!!!! I think it may be a chemical thing.......Pixie
Date: 8/14/2000 9:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 13850    I am female , and yes they should have to register. There civil rights are not as important as my family's and my safety. There is no way I would want a sex offender or any other perp. of a serious crime living in my neighborhood. In my opinion , the offender gave up his rights when he violated another persons rights.
Date: 8/14/2000 9:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 13850    BTW it would probably be a good idea to hang the sap sucker -- start giving a few of them the death penalty and maybe (hopefully) the other pervs out in the world would think twice.
Date: 8/15/2000 1:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 8090    YES......They should HAVE to register with the city they live in. They're lucky they're not in jail and are free to begin with! I'd sure like to know if "Chester the Molester" was living next door to my kids and I!!! They made numerous violations of their victim's rights, so an eye for an eye....RIGHT??? These "civil rights" activists are the reason why it is so hard to keep law and order in the states anyway!!!!!
Date: 8/15/2000 1:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 8090    Oops......I'm a female, age 29.
Date: 8/18/2000 6:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 13258    Most definately. I live in a very small community and am a mother of 1. I would be alright with the person living around me but my son could and would be made aware of it.
Date: 8/18/2000 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 14039    Male 17, As you may know a national newspaper released the adresses of many sex offenders in the u.k recently. As you can imagine, when the public find that a sex offender is living in their community they will react badly and the sex offender can become victim of violent attacks. But I also believe that people have the right to know if a sex offender is in the community. It's a hard decision to make, and i'm pretty borderline on this one , but I'm going to go with......YES the should have to register.
Date: 8/20/2000 7:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 11939    Why don't people demand that murderers register
with the city or state? I think if you require
one group of felons to register, we should require
all felons to register. This way you know where
all the violent criminals are. The only problem
is you are going to get at least one person who
does not believe this person should be in their
neighborhood an this person might just decide
to do away with the criminal to protect his
family, so he gets his gun and tries to do away with
the criminal and in the process shoots an innocent
person. We should just be careful.

Date: 8/21/2000 7:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 10045    I am a 24 year old female with 2 small children.Yes I do want to know if a sex offender is living in my neighborhood.I would hope that this person is trying to change his/her life around but I still have the right to know. When this person committed this awful crime he reaps all that he sows, which includes never being anonymous again.
Date: 8/21/2000 7:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    I think that they should be registered, but even before that I think they should be given to the biggest, hairiest, meanest guy in their jail. Let them have some time alone then see how he likes it. ............Female 32 with 2 young children......................Magoo
Date: 8/23/2000 8:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13716    Thanks to all of you who answered this ad. I was able to finish my paper. During the research I performed I found that , Most convicted sex offenders are infact guilty, though most of them will deny the fact that it was actually an offense. Some say that they were trying to teach the person love or that they really wanted it. I also found that over 40% of the convicted sex offenders will repeat another sex crime. Thanks again for all your help.
Date: 7/6/2001 11:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 38751    yes yes yes yes yes
they soooo should have to
i agree with pixie

Date: 7/6/2001 11:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 38474    I am a female and yes, I think they should have to register due to the recidivism rate of sex offenders................Always, Racquie
