Scary things may end up killing you--if you believe in them. A study from the University of California, San Diego, offers clues to how fear influences mortality, a concept long explored in folklore, movies, and novels, such as the Sherlock Holmes classic THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, in which a family is doomed to die of fright. The findings focus on how fear significantly raises stress levels that lead to heart attacks. 47 million U.S. death certificates from 1973 to 1998 show fear-related deaths.
